Works for my Bose A20 in a Diamond DA40

  • By Tom Preston-Werner from San Francisco CA USA on Tuesday, May 23, 2017
  • Pros: Cheap solution to the problem
  • Review: I use a Bose A20 when I fly helicopters (Robinson R22, R44). Recently I've started taking fixed wing lessons and figured it would be cheaper to buy an adapter than to fork over another $1100 on an essentially identical headset. I wasn't sure if it'd work with the Diamond DA40, but it's been working perfectly! Very happy with this purchase.

50 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

  • Previously Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to add anything to make this work with a David Clark H10-66?

A: The H10-66 is a military headset so this adapter will not work (it is for converting civilian helicopter headsets).  To convert the David Clark H10-66 military headset to civilian fixed wing airplanes you will need the Low to High Impedance Adapter instead.

  • Saturday, August 06, 2022

Q: I have a Bose A20 and was told it’s a helicopter headset. Can I convert to C-172? It doesn’t have the 6 pin adapter but a single male. What will work?

A: Are you certain that it is a helicopter headset?  Or, is that what it said in a listing on eBay?  If you are certain that you have a helicopter headset, this will convert your headset to be used in the Cessna 172.  If you bought it used on eBay it is very likely that it''s a military headset (they are frequently sold incorrectly on eBay and the plugs look alike).  If it is a military headset you will need the Low to High Impedance Adapter instead.  You could also skip the adapters completely and just get the correct cable assembly for your needs - A20 Cable Assembly Straight Cord, Twin Plugs.  It takes less than 30 seconds to change the cable assembly of the Bose A20.

Q: Will this work on a H10-56? I was told it was a helicopter headset. I want to use it for fixed wing Cessna type aircraft. Also the mike has no foam. What should I replace it with?

A: Yes, this will convert the David Clark H10-56 headset to the standard dual plugs.  The H10-56 headset uses the David Clark 40062G-06 mic cover.

  • Friday, November 19, 2021

Q: I have an H10-76 headset. Will this a adapter work for a Cesna 172?

A: For the David Clark H10-76 military headset you would need either the David Clark H10-76 Conversion Kit or the Low to High Impedance Adapter.

  • Friday, April 16, 2021

Q: I accidentally bought a headset for a helicopter. It had the helicopter plugs. Will this adapter work for a Cessna 150 or a Cessna 172?

A: Yes, this will convert a helicopter headset to work in any Cessna 150 or 172.  Just make sure that you actually have a helicopter headset and not a military headset.  They have the same plug.  If you have a military headset you will need a low to high impedance adapter instead.  We find that many of the used headsets on eBay that are advertised as "helicopter" headsets are actually military headsets.

  • Monday, November 02, 2020

Q: Will this work for Bose A20 heli w/bluetooth? Or does it even matter?

A: Yes, the Helicopter to Standard Fixed Wing Adapter will work with the Bose A20 Aviation Headset (helicopter model / single-U-174 plug) and any other headset that has a single-U-174 plug on the end of the cable.

  • Thursday, January 26, 2017

Q: Does this helicopter to fixed wing adapter work in a VXA -220 Pro portable radio it has a CT-96 headset cable , I also need to plug a PTT switch into it ?

A: This adapter will convert a heli headset to a GA headset with dual plugs. The dual plugs can then plug into your radio's headset adapter. Unfortunately there is no port for a PTT switch. You would need to use the one on the radio.

Q: Hello, I just purchased a used AHX-32-04. I did not realize that this headset was for a helicopter. Will this adapter work to convert to airplane use. Will use of this adapter affect headset performance? Thank you.

A: Are you certain that it is the AXH-32-04?  Most of the used ones sold on eBay and marketed as a "Helicopter Model" turn out to be a military headset (they have the same plug).  If your headset really is a civilian helicopter model then this is the adapter that you need to convert to use in an airplane.  If you have the military model then you also need to convert impedance and can do so with this low to high impedance adapter.  The easiest way to identify the difference between the military and civilian model is to look at the microphone.  If it looks like a flat, round, pancake it is military.  You can see the differences in the picture below.

  • Thursday, February 07, 2013

Q: With this work with a AHX-32-02 unit and will it be Stereo?

A: No, this adapter will not convert the Bose AHX-32-02 (308100-0170)  which is a military configuration.  In order to convert the Bose AHX-32-02 headset you will need to convert impedance and change from single to dual plugs.  This can be accomplished with our Low to High Impedance Adapter.

Q: I have an sp4 helicopter helmet. I need to convert it to general aviation but I don't understand the impedance part. Will this work?

A: Military aircraft are typically low impedance while civilian aircraft are high impedance. If you use a low impedance headset in a high impedance aircraft, the mic will not function correctly. If your helmet is low impendance you will most likely need to convert it to high impedance using a Low to High Impedance Adapter.

Q: I just purchased a Bose A20 headset for helicopter. Father flys small airplanes. Will I be able to use this adapter in an airplane without damaging Bose , and will the noise cancellation still work? Thanks

Q: Didn't see this question on there. Will this adapter be sufficient to convert a Flightcom E-13 military helicopter headset for use in GA, specifically a Cessna 172, or will I need a new mic as well?

A: We do not have the specs on the E-13, however if it is a low impedance headset you would need to get the Low to High Impedance Adapter instead.  If it is high impedance, then this adapter should do the trick.

  • Tuesday, March 01, 2011

Q: I have a headset David Clark H10-36 and want to use them in a GA light sport airplane. Will this adapter work or do I need an impedance adapter?

Q: I have an H-10-46 model will this work?

A: Unfortunately, the H10-46 has been discontinued for more than 10 years so we no longer have much information about that headset.   As long as the H10-46 is a high impedance headset, this would work fine.  But, if it's low impedance, you would instead need the Low to High Impedance Adapter.

  • Monday, March 01, 2010

Q: I am considering purchasing a used Lightspeed 30/3G but it is set up for helicopter use. Will this adapter work and will the mike need to be changed? Thanks, Stan.

Q: I am looking into getting the Helicopter to Standard Fixed Wing Adapter for my Bose headset. Need to make sure it fits. Also what does "Does not convert impedance" mean?

    A:

This will work for you if your Bose X has the single U174 plug for helicopters. When it says that it does not convert impedance, it means that if you have a military Low Impedance headset, this adapter will not convert it to High Impedance for use in General Aviation.

  • Friday, September 04, 2009

Q: I have a H10-13HX that I want to use in a fixed wing. Is this item the correct one to use?

Q: Hello, I have a David Clark headset (military) Model H10-76XL. I would like to use it in the civilian airplanes like cessnas and what not.. What adapter should I use? What is the deal with all this "impedence". Thank you. Joe

A: You would need the David Clark Conversion Kit which includes an adapter to convert the U174 plug on the H10-76XL to dual plugs for fixed wing civilian use as well as an electret mic to swap out for the dynamic one on the 76. Military headsets are typically low impedance and will not work for general aviation which is why conversion is necessary.

  • Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Q: Will this convert a David Clark H10-37 military headset to be able to be used in a civilian aircraft?

A: Yes, the David Clark H10-37 headset is a high impedance headset, so all that you would need to convert it to use in a civilian aircraft is this Helicopter to Standard Fixed Wing Adapter.

  • Thursday, March 05, 2009

Q: Do you have an adapter to allow your headphones to be utilized on standard laptop computer inputs? I need to block out noise and record voice data to a laptop while flying in helicopters.

A: We do offer the PC Flight Simulator Headset Adapter which allows you to connect a headset with Fixed Wing plugs to a computer's headset interface. You would first need to convert your helicopter headset to Fixed Wing with this adapter in order for it to work properly.

  • Monday, March 02, 2009

Q: I would like to use two David Clark H20-16 headsets on a Flightcom 11sx intercom. Which adapter do I need?

  • Wednesday, January 07, 2009

  • Wednesday, September 17, 2008

A: Yes, it will work with a portable (not hard-wired) Bose headset.

  • Thursday, December 28, 2006

Q: I have a David Clark headset that was given to me, but it has connector plug with 4 contacts ( Mic & headset in one) Is the Helicopter to General aviation adapter the corret one to allow use of the headset in a general aviation aircraft. (my present headset has two separate plugs, 2 conductor, one slightly smaller than the other)

A: Do you know the model number of the David Clark headset that you have? If it's a military headset it will have a single plug. Some can be adapter simply using this adapter and some will require a different microphone as well (i.e. the David Clark H10-76 will also require the 1142-22 microphone).
