Q: I have these headset working with a Sigtronics 200 sport intercom in an open cockpit ultralight; comunications pilot-copilot are very noisy and would like to know in what way(s) this can be improved

A: The first place I would start is with a leather mic cover.  This should eliminate a lot of the wind noise you pickup in an open cockpit environment and show considerable improvement.  Make sure you have a leather cover on both / all headsets being used.

Q: How can I tell if I have a H10-13S model or the H10-13.4S model? The box has both stickers on it. There are 2 volume knobs, one on each ear?

A: If you have dual volume controls you have the H10-13S.  It will also have a small switch that says S / M (Stereo / Mono).

A: You can change the cords on the H10-13.4, but you can use the Fixed Wing to Helicopter Adapter to convert it to a single U-174/U plug for civilian helicopters.

A: Yes, the H10-13.4 will work with your avionics.

A: No, it does not.  In order to make the H10-13.4 Bluetooth capable, you would need the Blulink Adapter.

Q: I know it seems like overkill, but can this headset be used with my computer while gaming? I think they are just cool looking.

A: No, it cannot be used for gaming on its own.  You would need to purchase the PC Flight Simulator Headset Adapter for the H10-13.4 to be able to plug into your computer.  If you are not using this as a Pilot, and only for gaming, I would suggest the David Clark Computer Compatible Headset - USB plug or David Clark Computer Compatible Headset - 3.5mm plugs.

A: Yes, this can be used on any airplane with the standard dual plugs.

A: Yes, this will work fine in the B737.  It has the standard dual plugs that will fit in the jacks in the B737.

Q: I am looking for a headset and adapter combo that will best work on military helicopter as well as general aviation fixed wing aircraft. I prefer David Clarks or similar. Any suggestions?

A: You could go a couple of different routes.  You could get this David Clark H10-13.4 and then get a High to Low Impedance Adapter.  Or, you could get something like the David Clark H10-66 headset that is a unique dual impedance headset for use in civilian and military aircraft.   With the H10-66 you would still need to convert from a single to dual plugs with this adapter to use it in a civilian fixed wing (not necessary for civilian helicopter).

Q: Is there an aerobatic H10 13.4 version.

A: No, there is not a model built specifically for aerobatics.  There is just the H10-13.4 (mono, single volume control, airplanes), the H10-13S (stereo, dual volume controls, airplanes), the H10-13.4H  for helicopters and the Youth H10-13.4.

A: The H10-20 is going to be a little heavier (21oz vs 16.5oz) and have a little bit better noise attenuation (24db vs 23db) but besides that, they are very similar headsets.

This is not available with different length cable, however you can get a five foot headset extension cable.

A: The H10-13.4 is a mono headset and only has the single volume control. The H10-13S is the stereo version and has dual volume controls.

This headset - the H10-13.4 - is the most popular pilot headset on the market.  It offers great passive noise reduction, is lightweight, and very comfortable.  And, it is backed by the excellent workmanship and service from David Clark.  Deciding on either a passive or active noise reduction headset is really a personal choice.  Most pilots - at some point - will eventually end up buying an ANR headset for themselves and using their original passive headset as a passenger headset.  Personally, I used this exact headset for all of my private training and then bought the Lightspeed Zulu a couple of years ago.  The H10-13.4 is still used today by my passengers.  It really depends on how much you want to spend now while in training.  If funds are limited, usually it's better to put the money towards lessons instead of fancy equipment.

Automatic shutoff is a feature found on many ANR headsets that will automatically turn the power off after a certain amount of time disconnected from the aircraft (or with the aircraft intercom off).  Unlike passive headsets that do not require any batteries, all ANR headsets are powered either by batteries or - if hardwired - by the aircraft electrical system.  The auto-shutoff feature is meant to save your batteries for those times when you forget to hit the power button after a flight.

Q: Can the h10-13.4 helicopter headset be converted to general aviation?

A: Sure.  You can convert the H10-13H (helicopter) headset to be used in a fixed wing aircraft with the Helicopter to Fixed Wing Adapter.  Or, you can convert from the H10-13.4 to a helicopter by using the Fixed Wing to Helicopter Adapter.

Q: Other than the plug type, what other technical differences are there between the H10-13.4 and the H10-13H.

A: There is no difference. The H10-13H is the helicopter variant of David Clark's H10-13.4 headset.

A: The M-7A microphone is one of the best noise-cancelling mics available, so I would say that you shouldn't have any sort of problem. It may be situational due to the open cockpit, so if it does not work out you can return the headset within 30 days of the date that you receive it.

Q: I am considering buying the H10-13.4 b/c it seems like a proven model. As a new student pilot (still interviewing instructors) I'm not clear on the importance/meaning of TSO, Passive, ANR and DNR. Please clear this up for me. Also, how can I be assured that the jacks will fit the airplane? Is there a standard for a two jack setup?

A: The H10-13.4 is a headset we would definitely recommend as someone starting out in flight training and many pilots fly with it for years after. A headset being TSO-certified means that it has undergone extra testing by the FAA and is really only important if you will be flying for a company that requires TSO certification. ANR (active noise reduction) headsets have additional electronic noise cancellation features while passive headsets rely on the fit of the ear seals for their noise cancellation. As far as the connection, most fixed-wing aircraft have the standard two-plug configuration.

Q: I have one of these headsets, not sure if it has been modified. My cord has 2 connections to hook up to my radio adapter. Is this the way it comes?

A: Yes, it comes with two male plugs (PJ-055 and PJ-068).

A: The five year warranty starts on the date that you receive your headset.  You simply use your sales receipt as a proof of purchase.

Q: I am just starting flight school. What are the pros/cons of stereo vs. mono headsets? Thanks.

A: The stereo headsets are the exact same as the mono version in most cases. The ONLY time there will be any difference is when you are connected to a stereo music source (such as a CD or XM Radio) and then it will provide stereo music separation in each ear. For communication within the cockpit or to ATC (Air Traffic Control) there is no difference at all.
