The Type A-2 leather flight jacket is one of the most classic and immediately recognizable articles of military clothing ever designed. It is most closely associated with World War II U.S. Army fighter pilots, who often decorated their jackets with squadron patches and elaborate artwork painted on the back.
Cockpit USA (formerly Avirex LTD), the prime and only USAF government contractor for Air Force issue flight jackets, now offers the updated current 21st century version of the classic A-2 Air Force pilot's jacket, made out of the same luxurious Mil. Spec. government goatskin as earlier A-2 versions. The Air Force life support division listened to their pilots' requests to modify the 1987 version of the A-2 to accommodate current needs. This jacket now offers a host of new features which do not detract from its authentic appearance but provide the user with modern day conveniences. These include hand warming pockets, underneath flap pockets, inside pockets for personal equipment and a special pen pocket inside to allow pilots access to these articles. The A-2 Leather Jacket also features snap-down collar and knit cuffs and waistband.

These jackets are roomier so order your regular size. The sizes are standard men's coat
sizes. Generally speaking, Small is 38-40, Medium is 40-42, Large is
42-44, and XL is 46-48, and XXL is 50-52. Please note that sizes 48 and

For an accurate measurement, you'll need a flexible tape measure (inches) and someone to help you place and read the measuring tape. Measure the biggest circumference around the chest and keep the measuring tape horizontal, wrap around the biggest girth of the chest, keeping the measuring tape up and close to the arm pits.

This is my second, recent purchase of a 21st Century A-2 Jacket. I was so pleased with the first jacket, I wanted a second one for our other home. These jackets are incredibly well made, the leather is top quality, and the attention to detail is excellent. I have purchased many of this type of jacket, from other providers, none are as good as what Cockpit USA makes. I had an opportunity to stop by the Cockpit USA office in Manhattan. The people were friendly, accommodating and very helpful. When ordering my second jacket, I asked for a different lining and to have my name embroidered on the lining. There was an additional charge, but it was well worth it. I have only good things to say about 21st Century A-2 Jacket.

The construction of the jacket and the quality of the Goatskin Leather are Fantastic! And the Seal Brown looks great.
I had looked at other vendors and what they offered in similar jackets. Some wouldn't tell you where their jackets were made, and I wanted one made in the U.S.A.! I'm kind of in between a size 40R and a 42R, I went with the 42R, and it is slightly loose with a Tee-Shirt and Hoodie underneath. I might have been able to wear a size 40R, I'm +/- 160 pounds, 5'8" tall, wear 34 waist in jeans and 67 years old. It is very comfortable from day one because of the Goatskin Leather being very supple (but a very tough hide from what I have read.) I do like the Modern features, such as: side entry hand warmer pockets, (2) inside pockets and the leather pen pockets with all these features it still has the Classic Look of the Original A-2 Flight Jacket. The customer service at mypilotstore.com is very helpful plus the price for what you get is a good deal!

What a nice jacket! I tried several different clothing items when I measured myself to be sure that these items could be used under the flight jacket for added warmth when required. My chest measurement came to be 56 inches with any one of these items. I am 6'-2" tall. I prefer a loose fit for room to move without ripping out an armpit seam. So I ordered a 58 Tall jacket. It fit me perfectly! I can wear a Primaloft vest or a heavy wool sweater or a fleece hoodie under the flight jacket and still move. And it isn't too baggy at all. In fact, it still looks very nice while wearing just a T-shirt.
The inside chest pockets and 2 pen slots are very handy to store a notebook, wallet or eye glasses. The outside patch pockets are adequate size for any other items or store a pair of gloves when not needed on your hands at the moment. My only suggestion for an improvement would be deeper handwarmer pockets behind the patch pockets. I wear an XXL glove or Size 11 or 12 in numerical sizing. I can't get my entire hand in there, but enough so my fingers won't get cold. But overall, a high quality jacket with a very smart look that should last more than 25 years or more.

Q: Do these jackets provide adequate warmth during winter...what temperature range...i.e. how low a temp can these be worn?
A: It's not a super heavy jacket, but most people find that it does a good job of keeping them warm in normal winter weather.
