Lightspeed Zulu 4: More Comfort, More Clarity, More Flexibility

Since 2017, the Lightspeed Zulu 3 Headset has been one of the most popular ANR headsets in aviation. Now Lightspeed has released its successor, the Lightspeed Zulu 4 ANR Headset. What’s New on the Lightspeed Zulu 4

The Zulu 4 uses the same proven ANR circuitry and stainless steel/magnesium construction as the Zulu 3, but adds meaningful upgrades in comfort, connectivity, and usability:

FrameFit Ear Seals

This is the upgrade glasses-wearing pilots have been waiting for. The Zulu 4’s new FrameFit ear seals use dual-density foam that compresses evenly around glasses, sunglasses, and hats. The ear cups are more lozenge-shaped with a slight taper that conforms better to the jaw, so no more gaps or constant readjusting. Reviewers at Flying Magazine tested the Zulu 4 with different combinations of sunglasses and baseball caps and reported no “pressure point hot spots” and no loss of fidelity even with vigorous head movement.

Dual Bluetooth

Connect two devices simultaneously. No re-pairing, no cords, no dongles. Listen to music from your phone while running ForeFlight on your iPad. Phone calls automatically interrupt iPad audio, and pressing the Bluetooth button answers the call. When the call ends, press play to resume your iPad audio. The Zulu 3 only supported a single Bluetooth connection.

AINR: AI-Enhanced Outbound Audio

This is a first for aviation headsets. AINR (Active Inbound Noise Reduction) uses onboard AI processing to scrub cockpit noise from your outgoing microphone audio during Bluetooth phone calls. Lightspeed says it removes up to 90% of background noise, so when you call an FBO or your spouse from the cockpit, your voice comes through as if there’s no engine noise at all.

Important note: AINR applies to Bluetooth phone calls only, not to radio transmissions. Your intercom and ATC audio use the standard mic path.

Longer Mic Boom and Cable

The mic boom grew from 6.5 inches on the Zulu 3 to 7 inches on the Zulu 4. That half-inch makes a real difference. It allows the mic to be centered in front of your mouth instead of off to the side. The upper audio cable also grew from 42.5 inches to 51 inches, with Kevlar-reinforced braided construction for better durability and flexibility in cockpits with awkward jack placements.

Lightspeed Aviation App

The Zulu 4 pairs with Lightspeed’s new Aviation App to record incoming and outgoing cockpit communications via Bluetooth, play back transmissions, draw diagrams, and archive flight recordings on your phone or tablet. One reviewer from AvBrief called it “a game-changer for flight-deck audio capture,” noting it replaced a GoPro setup they had been using solely for recording audio.

Note: This is a different app than what pairs with the Delta Zulu and its carbon monoxide detection features.

Features That Carry Over

The Zulu 4 keeps the features that made the Zulu series a top choice:

  • Stainless Steel and Magnesium Construction. Built with durable cables around a Kevlar core, designed to endure harsh flying environments for years.
  • ComPriority. Patented technology that automatically lowers auxiliary audio volume during radio or intercom transmissions.
  • Auto Shutoff. Saves battery life by powering down the headset when not in use.
  • 2x AA Batteries. Up to 40 hours of battery life, no special batteries required.
  • 7-Year Warranty. The best in the aviation industry.

What Reviewers Are Saying

The Zulu 4 has been well received across the aviation press:

  • Flying Magazine: “A bestseller made even better.” They praised the FrameFit ear seals for staying in place with glasses and caps, and the longer mic boom for centering properly in front of the mouth.
  • General Aviation News: Tested in a Piper J-3 Cub, the reviewer noted “FrameFit delivered. I felt no need to readjust the headset after an hour of flying.”
  • AvBrief: In a head-to-head with the Bose A30, the reviewer called the Zulu 4 “built by and for the everyday working pilot” with “excellent Bluetooth integration and a pleasingly natural radio tone.” They noted the Zulu 4’s braided Kevlar cable “feels like it could survive a few thousand hours of flight-school abuse.”

Plug Configurations

The Zulu 4 is available in three configurations:

  • Dual GA: Standard twin-plug for most general aviation aircraft
  • Helicopter (U-174): Single plug for rotorcraft
  • LEMO/6-pin: For aircraft with panel-powered audio systems. The LEMO version includes a control module with AA batteries so you can also use it in standard audio jacks via a LEMO-to-GA plug adapter.

Bottom Line

The Lightspeed Zulu 4 is a thoughtful evolution of an already excellent headset. If you wear glasses or a hat when you fly, the FrameFit ear seals alone may justify the upgrade. Add in dual Bluetooth, a longer mic boom, AI noise reduction on phone calls, and cockpit audio recording via the app, and it’s a compelling package at $1,099.

The Zulu 3 remains in the lineup for pilots who want proven Lightspeed ANR at a lower price point. And if carbon monoxide detection and custom hearing profiles are priorities, the Delta Zulu is still the only headset offering those features.
