What to expect in a lesson

Each of the lessons in Gleim's Online Ground School is divided into several sections referred to as Instructional Elements.  To assist you in your studies, there are four Instructional Elements in each lesson:

  • an optional audiovisual presentation **Available only in Sport Pilot and Private Pilot Ratings
  • a Knowledge Transfer Outline
  • a Multiple-Choice Study Quiz
  • a Multiple-Choice Test Quiz

After each quiz you will be provided with an opportunity to review the questions that you missed.

How to complete a lesson
Choose the appropriate lesson from the Lesson Selection screen. The lessons must be completed in the order shown.  Download and view the optional audiovisual presentation for the lesson.

To complete a lesson you must:

  1. Study the knowledge transfer outline for the lesson. The outlines are broken down into sections called "modules" to make studying easier. You can use the print function on your browser to print the entire outline: from the IE Menu, click File, and then click Print. Use this printout for quick reference. When you have finished studying the outlines, you will be ready to take the multiple-choice quizzes.
  2. Answer all of the thought-provoking multiple-choice study questions. You must answer all questions in order to continue. After selecting your answer choice, you will receive immediate question feedback. Your grade on the study quiz is based on the first answer you select for each question.
  3. Review the answers you missed. After completing the study quiz you will be given a review of the questions you missed on the quiz. If you did not score a 70% or better, you will need to retake the study quiz.
  4. Pass the multiple-choice test quiz with a score of 70% or better. You will be given a quiz based on the material you covered in the study quiz and outline sections of the lesson. You may move back and forth between questions and change your answers until you are ready to grade the quiz. When you have answered each of the multiple-choice questions to your satisfaction, click the Grade button at the bottom of the screen below the last question.
  5. Review the answers you missed. After completing the test quiz you will be given a review of the questions you missed on the quiz. If you did not score a 70% or better, you will need to retake the test quiz.

Completing the Stage Tests
After every 4-6 lessons, a stage test will be given.  The stage test will be made up of questions from each of the preceding lessons.  You will be required to pass the stage test with a score of 70% or higher before being able to move on to the next lesson.

Completing the End of Course Test
After you have completed all lessons and stage tests for your Online Ground School, you will be administered a cumulative end-of-course test.  You will be required to pass this test with a minimum score of 70%. You will have two chances to pass the end-of-course test. If you fail more than twice, you will be locked out of the course and you will be required to send an e-mail to Gleim Publications explaining the situation. It will then be at Gleim's discretion whether you may continue the course or not.

How to complete the course

  1. Complete all lessons of Gleim's Online Ground School in your chosen rating.

It's OK, But Not The Best

  • By Tony from Irmo SC USA on Tuesday, April 26, 2011
  • Pros: Does the job.
  • Review: Let me start by saying that the course isn't bad. It teaches the test and that is what it is designed to do. There are no "how to" videos or anything. There is a quick video overview of the unit that you are working on, and study guides that you read and then take practice tests. So, if you can read something and remember it then this is a good way to study for the written test. A couple of things I didn't like is once you have taken a test on a subject, you can't go back and take another test on the same subject. You have to wait until you get to the end of the unit and take a unit test. You can review the test you took, but not take a different test on the same subject. A few videos here and there would be nice. I have an older King course and that is probably the best route to take if you like video instruction. I did purchase ASA Prepware, and it's pretty much the same as Gleim, but you can take a test on any subject at any time and you can take timed practice exams just like a FAA test anytime you want.I found the reading portion to be more informative and easier to follow, and it's cheaper and you can download it to your computer, so you don't have to have an internet connection to study. Bottom line, if you want video instruction, go with King. If you want to cram for the test and don't care about the videos, go with Gleim or ASA.

not flashy but well organized and focused

  • By MRC01 from WA State on Monday, August 20, 2007
  • Pros:
  • Review: Gleim ground school includes detailed outlines that eventually filled a 3-4" thick binder when I printed them out. They are offered in HTML and PDF format. This alone was worth the price of the course to me. The info is well organized and focused on the FAA test. The course is broken up into sections. You can leave and return at any time even in the middle of unit tests. Gleim's web servers were always up and responsive whenever I logged in - no problems with downtime. Gleim responded to my occasional questions promptly and accurately.

It doesn't have the fancy videos and glossy photos and artwork that some courses have. I found this a welcome relief - the last thing I want is Barbie & Ken teaching me how to fly.

At the end of the school it provides a certificate that enables you to take the FAA test.

Q: What is the difference between the Online Ground School and the Gleim private pilot test kit (w/ the software, books, etc.)? Does the online ground school provide all the necessary materials (besides the E6-B flight computer)?

A: The online ground school is an interactive ground school that you do on the internet using your web browser.  With the online course, there is nothing physically shipped to you.  You just get an activation code via email to use the online course.  The Gleim Private Pilot Kit with Software includes physical books, software, E6B, plotter, and logbook that are shipped to you.
