What to expect in a lesson

Each of the lessons in Gleim's Online Ground School is divided into several sections referred to as Instructional Elements.  To assist you in your studies, there are four Instructional Elements in each lesson:

  • an optional audiovisual presentation **Available only in Sport Pilot and Private Pilot Ratings
  • a Knowledge Transfer Outline
  • a Multiple-Choice Study Quiz
  • a Multiple-Choice Test Quiz

After each quiz you will be provided with an opportunity to review the questions that you missed.

How to complete a lesson
Choose the appropriate lesson from the Lesson Selection screen. The lessons must be completed in the order shown.  Download and view the optional audiovisual presentation for the lesson.

To complete a lesson you must:

  1. Study the knowledge transfer outline for the lesson. The outlines are broken down into sections called "modules" to make studying easier. You can use the print function on your browser to print the entire outline: from the IE Menu, click File, and then click Print. Use this printout for quick reference. When you have finished studying the outlines, you will be ready to take the multiple-choice quizzes.
  2. Answer all of the thought-provoking multiple-choice study questions. You must answer all questions in order to continue. After selecting your answer choice, you will receive immediate question feedback. Your grade on the study quiz is based on the first answer you select for each question.
  3. Review the answers you missed. After completing the study quiz you will be given a review of the questions you missed on the quiz. If you did not score a 70% or better, you will need to retake the study quiz.
  4. Pass the multiple-choice test quiz with a score of 70% or better. You will be given a quiz based on the material you covered in the study quiz and outline sections of the lesson. You may move back and forth between questions and change your answers until you are ready to grade the quiz. When you have answered each of the multiple-choice questions to your satisfaction, click the Grade button at the bottom of the screen below the last question.
  5. Review the answers you missed. After completing the test quiz you will be given a review of the questions you missed on the quiz. If you did not score a 70% or better, you will need to retake the test quiz.

Completing the Stage Tests
After every 4-6 lessons, a stage test will be given.  The stage test will be made up of questions from each of the preceding lessons.  You will be required to pass the stage test with a score of 70% or higher before being able to move on to the next lesson.

Completing the End of Course Test
After you have completed all lessons and stage tests for your Online Ground School, you will be administered a cumulative end-of-course test.  You will be required to pass this test with a minimum score of 70%. You will have two chances to pass the end-of-course test. If you fail more than twice, you will be locked out of the course and you will be required to send an e-mail to Gleim Publications explaining the situation. It will then be at Gleim's discretion whether you may continue the course or not.

Inexpensive course but out of date test prep data

  • By A Customer from Yorktown VA USA on Tuesday, March 07, 2017
  • Pros: Inexpensive and comprehensive
  • Review: The course is ok for the price. My impression is that the questions from the training exams are old. Hence I had some surprises during the written test. My score was 88% in the written what was well below my results from the Gleim training exams. I would recommend Gleim but allow some margin to compensate for the fact that you will be confronted witch never seen types of questions.
