Microsoft Flight Simulator for DOS was first released in 1982, three years before the first version of Windows landed on PCs.ย Over the next 25 years, Microsoft released 12 major revisions to the popular simulator with more and more features and functionality.
But, it came to an end in 2009 when Microsoft closed down the ACES Game Studio, which was the department responsible for creating and maintaining the flight simulator series.
Five years later, in 2015, Dovetail games licensed the rights to Flight Simulator from Microsoft and ported it to the Steam gaming platform.ย That version is still available as the Microsoft Flight Simulator X Steam Edition.
