Trig TT22 - Class 1 – Mode S and 1090ES ADS-B Out transponder

Trig makes the world’s smallest and lightest Mode S certified GA transponders. The TT22 Trig compact transponder can fit into to the tightest panel space. This allows other instrumentation or avionics to be accommodated, providing a genuine benefit in any installation.

The TT22 is a high powered performer, a Class 1 transponder – ideal for use in aircraft flying above 15,000 feet and / or above 175 knots. It is also suitable for ADS-B, where a Class 1 transponder is required (within the U.S. for example). A free FAA STC allows the TT22 to be installed as a compliant ADS-B Out solution in 576 aircraft types. The TT22 is compatible with many popular GPS position sources including Garmin GNS and GTN navigators and the Trig TN70.

Trig TT22 Features:

  • Compact.  Minimal panel space required. Fits in a standard 57mm round instrument hole or smaller compact mount
  • Integrated altitude encoder included
  • Certified for IFR / VFR flight
  • Certified Class 1 transponder 250 watts nominal output
  • Manual dimming feature (adjustable backlight)
  • Lightweight – 440g (0.8 lbs)
  • Low power consumption
  • 1090ES ADS-B Out capable
  • EASA ETSO and FAA TSO Certification – includes TSO C166b the latest ADS-B standard
  • Free European Minor Change approvals
  • Free FAA ADS-B STC for 576 aircraft types
  • Unbeatable value and quality – designed and manufactured in the U.K.
  • Two year worldwide warranty

The TT22 is a two part transponder with a compact control head; this includes an inbuilt altitude encoder – saving further space and expense. A separate hardware box can be installed anywhere in the airframe. The mounted control head is only 54mm (2 3/25”) deep and can be fitted in panel using a 57mm (2 ¼”) round hole or smaller compact mount, the unit ships with the necessary fittings for both install options. The TT22 unit is highly efficient and is ideal for use via an auxiliary battery in gliding or lighter than air flight.

The TT22 transponder is easy to operate and with a crisp, bright display. It is easy to read in all lighting conditions and features manual dimming. The higher powered TT22 can be used in IFR and VFR flight in high performance aircraft, over 175 knots and/or above 15,000 feet. The transponder control head is splash proof too so it’s ideal for open cockpit and seaplane operations.

Mode A and C transponders are now being replaced by Mode S technology which is optimised for tomorrow’s airspace requirements. Despite its modest size the TT22 is a heavyweight performer, at 250 watts nominal power output this class 1 transponder meets the latest FAA TSO C166b standards for ADS-B Out.

Trig was the first company in the world to offer a ‘mandate ready’ certified 1090ES ADS-B Out compliant solution. The TT22 is popular in the U.S. where a certified WAAS GPS, and a ground air determination device are also required forming the ideal 2020 ADS-B solution. It’s worth remembering that to receive all ADS-B In transmissions in the U.S. the FAA requires a functioning certified ADS-B Out device, so don’t miss out on airspace information – fit a Trig TT22.

All Trig products come with a two year warranty, supported by a global network of Approved Trig Dealers and Approved Trig Service Centers.

Good, but incompatible with Vertical Power

  • By Steve C from Puget Sound, WA on Wednesday, July 06, 2022
  • Pros: Remote control from EFIS
  • Review: Just be aware that the TT22 is incompatible with the Vertical Power VP-X system. In my Highlander, the TT22 (from another vendor) has small fluctuations in current at higher RPM's that cause the VP-X to sense a short circuit and pop the electronic circuit breaker. After working with both Trig and Vertical Power support teams (both were very responsive and helpful) we concluded this is an unsolvable incompatibility. I've wired the TT22 directly to my battery contactor with a 3A inline fuse. It is working fine there. I really like being able to control this unit remotely from my EFIS.

Good solution to a tough problem

  • By William from Wilton CA USA on Tuesday, March 12, 2019
  • Pros: Tiny, low power requirement, remotely controlled, capable of ADS-B compliance.
  • Review: The TT22 is an excellent solution for a small homebuilt airplane and that is exactly what I am installing it into, a Sonex Onex. I installed the transponder only but left room on the mounting tray and prewired the harness to allow future installation of a Trig TN70 or TN72 for ADS-B out compliance. One small disappointment. This unit will fit in a standard 2-1/4" instrument hole but requires different pattern for the mounting screws and leaves a gap above and below the control head. With some effort I produced a decorative escutcheon and painted it to mathch the panel. The transponder included a template to be used to drill the necessary holes but would it be so much to ask to include a CNC punched esceutcheon in the box with a $2,000 device?
