  • Pros: Works as it says it should right from the box
  • Cons:
  • Review: I wanted this to improve the location with my mobile chart plotter when I am sailing.

The beauty of this piece of equipment is that it is easy to use for both IoS and Android devices.

I particularly like the ability it has to link up to 5 other devices.

Great product

  • Pros: Great no brainier
  • Cons: Sometimes you have to deleate it from iPad then reaquire it
  • Review: I turn it on and in seconds it's working, all the iPhones iPads work great. I keep it under my seat and it works all day. Between flights it just sits there and does its thing. I can be over 100 feet away from the plane and still get a signal

Excellent - Just what I needed

  • By AM Dream from Baltimore MD USA on Thursday, January 08, 2015
  • Pros: Muliple device support
  • Cons: It would be nice to have a support program/app tool for a MS laptop
  • Review: Just what I needed. I was looking for a multi device support GPS to back up my main boat GPS and chart plotter and plan and track routes on a tablet or laptop. Now I have the best of both worlds without draining my mobile device batteries for an entire day on the water.

Worth every cent

  • By Miguel from Dayton OH USA on Monday, September 28, 2015
  • Review: I am very impressed with this product and is certainly very much worth the value that I paid. I especially like the fact that there are other satellites that provide additional feed to the positioning. They also serve as a great backup in case the primary satellites are not available

Fastest, strongest GPS antenna

  • By Henry from Huntsville TX USA on Friday, August 30, 2013
  • Pros: Fast, sensitive
  • Cons: No dedicated app -yet
  • Review: Though Dual has not released the 160 app by the end of August, 2013, who cares? The XGPS150 app works fine.

This antenna finds itself inside a room behind blinds within seconds. I will try it in narrow European streets later, but this is impressive.

This may be the best GPS antenna ever.

Very good product and provides excellent training data on IPad

  • By Michael from Bloomington IN USA on Wednesday, October 02, 2013
  • Pros: Works great and has great battery life.
  • Cons: N/A
  • Review: Being a student pilot and having soloed this helped myself and my instructor to provide review with errors when training. Also is a great tool to use for my IPad in unison with Fore Flight. Glad I purchased it and great tool. This GPS has also been beneficial so more than one IPad can record data providing others with data giving several opinions and reviews.

So far, so good.

  • By Mike from Dublin CA USA on Tuesday, September 24, 2013
  • Pros: Accepts multiple users. Stable operation.
  • Cons: None so far, unless not being able to view satellites is a factor.
  • Review: Used as GPS for iPads running Jepessen FD. Accepts multiple Bluetooth users, which solves the problem of sorting who is using which GPS. Does not require opening Dual app to use, but unlike our previous XL150 versions, does not seem to offer view of satellites being used. Hopefully, this model will prove more reliable than previous models, with which we've experienced 40% failure rate. Performance so far has been very stable.

Dependable

  • By Bear from Thailand on Tuesday, February 23, 2021
  • Pros: Small and light. Rubber base will not slide on most level surfaces.
  • Cons: Status LED’s a little bright for night flight, but just flipping the unit upside down at night works fine. I personally would like the battery to last long for flights (14hours) but we keep it plugged into a usb charger at all times.
  • Review: Used this unit for years until smashed by maintenance somehow. Flew all over the world for years and no complaints. Just here now to buy a replacement.

    Lacked Nothing
Signal Reception in Off Road Navigation. Keeps locked on signal even when
in heavy tree cover. In town signal strong when around tall buildings. Even tracks

Big improvement

  • By David from Teterboro NJ USA on Wednesday, July 16, 2014
  • Pros: Good design, clear labeling, strong reception.
  • Cons: Still not 100% on position display, and no reason given.
  • Review: Much better than the miserable, persnickety model XGPS150. Only one unit needed for multiple connections. Much better signal acquisition rate, and drops out far less, although it still does drop every so often. Our 150s used to have 8 or 9 satellites, but still have low-accuracy warnings and would not display ownship position. The 160 has not done that yet in a couple months of flying. I can't rate battery life as we keep it plugged in while flying. Overall, a big step up from the high-maintenance 150s.

Works well for a crew using Jepp FD

  • By Bear from Bangkok Bangkok Thailand on Wednesday, February 26, 2014
  • Pros: Fast to Errect, Fast data updates to applications. Quality product.
  • Cons: Batter life not up to 15hour Aircraft. LED's too birght. IPAD aplication TOO White.
  • Review: We operate with a crew of two sometimes three. All crew have ipads with JeppFD. Even the crew near the crew rest area or the forward galley can keep abreast of the aircraft's position via the strengths of the XGPS160. This unit is very fast to align and faster data updates compared to the older model. So great to have one unit that can take care of all of the ipads at once.
One wish would be for a 17 hour battery. One of our older GV's does not have AC plugs near the cockpit.
The other grips is the the LED's on this newer unit are far too bright. At night it seems to be damaging. But, the XGPS160 works fine in its rubber non skid housing upside down to hide the status lights at night. Speaking of night, the XGPS160 Ipad application could use a night mode or just not be all White!
Other than the little niggles, a quality dependable unit. Out of the box it just works and works well. I would/ will buy another one.

Fast, accurate, great receiver sensitivity... when it works

  • By AK from Honolulu, Hi on Thursday, September 19, 2013
  • Pros: Fast alignment, very accurate, sensitive antenna, 5 device pairing
  • Cons: Uncertain reliability
  • Review: Quick to setup, capture and align in adverse conditions (indoors, tile roof, partial view of the sky). Works with XGPS150 status tool, GPS enabled iPad/iPhone software capable of simultaneously pairing with 5 devices. Accuracy on par with aircraft systems (A330). Great sensitivity when carried in my pocket while navigating through city streets. In this case it was usually within a block of my actual location and would steadily improve it's accuracy when stopped. Unfortunately, it quit acquiring satellites. The GPS would no longer "search" for signals as displayed on the Dual status tool. Over the course of two days, the bluetooth failed and the unit would shut itself off in a little over a minute.

Dual tech support communications was adequate. They did receive the unit two weeks ago and I am still waiting for a replacement.

It works, but why not just use the XGPS150

  • By Tom from Walnut Creek CA USA on Wednesday, March 16, 2016
  • Pros: Apps for battery and satellites
  • Cons: expensive, doesn't track with iPad
  • Review: It works great, but the iPad app doesn't like the tracking. Where as the Android app work fine with the tracking. I do like the Dual apps for the xgps150 and 160 to check battery and satellites. Don't spend the extra money on the xgps160 unless you want the Russian satellites. BTW, A lot of the flight apps do there own tracking.

Easy to use

  • By A Customer from CA USA on Wednesday, May 28, 2014
  • Pros: Up to five conections, Great for backup situations or less expensive alternative to ADS products. Loved the "reverse" suction option for the windows. Fast reconnections and easy to update, a big plus in my book
  • Cons: Tendency to skip from an east to north heading with a 30+ degree bank.
  • Review: It allows up to five device connections (as advertised). Great price point considering the functionality of the device. It was easy to update the device via the DUAL utility. Gives concise satellite stations, US and Russian. Operates well if you find the right location on your plane. Has a tendency to "skip" when entering turns beyond 30 degrees from an East to North heading; probably a line of sight issue? Would buy again as an entry level GPS unit or backup. Performed great under direct sunlight and 97F temps.

  • Pros: small, aquires fast, free app. for device monitoring
  • Cons: battery life
  • Review: Met all expectations....works well with my "Fly Q" and "Cloud Ahoy"....only reason it didn't get a 5-star is battery life...only about 8 hours...more than enough for daily flights, but have to charge each night/day on cross-country.

Excellent product, easy to connect to an Ipad

  • By Didier from NOUMEA Province Sud New Caledonia on Tuesday, August 18, 2015
  • Review: I was looking for a way to receive GPS inside the cockpit without having to put the Ipad on the top of the instrument panel. This product did the trick perfectly and allowed me to have the Ipad on my knees or on the central pedestal without having to "look" at the satellites. The software to allow the Ipad to receive and Identify the GPS was easy to use.

Things You Should Know!

  • By Michael from Muskego WI USA on Thursday, June 02, 2016
  • Pros: iPads connect super fast and stay connected
  • Cons: Took awhile to figure it out but the Mac Laptop and PC Laptop do connect but then disconnect if there's no application running that requires GPS sentences. But as soon as you launch your navigation application it does reconnect and works fine. I talked to Dual and Targus but neither could explain why this happens...that's really disappointing considering it's their business.
  • Review: I plan on using this on our boat for daily navigation but haven't yet tried it, so as for the battery life I can't respond to that except to say that I think I'll have the 160 plugged into a usb port for constant power anyway... As far a connecting to devices... I have 3 iPads which connect right away. I have one MacBook Air and one Lenovo PC. I've found out that the Mac will connect to the 160 and then disconnect within 30 seconds... if I then start my Nav. app it reconnects and stays connected....On the PC it does the same exact thing..... One other thing about the PC is that I don't have bluetooth built into the PC. I use a little usb bluetooth dongle which works great and it's made by Targus.

  • Pros: reasonably priced for receiving all satellites. Quick position acquisition if no interference from heated window.
  • Cons: My Dual 150 picks up better under a heated window (but it always looses itself at least once during a long trip. The Dual 160 so far hasn't lost itself on any long trip).
  • Review: Had to return a lemon because it would not even pick up one satellite out in the open. The replacement picks up satellites okay in some airplanes with heated windows and others not at all. Have to put the unit up against a non-heated window in the back. Otherwise, it is doing good so far. Up to 5 other devises connected at the same time does not degrade the position like some other units.

Didn't meet my expectations

  • By Derek from UK United Kingdom on Thursday, June 22, 2017
  • Review: I bought this product to interface into my iPad and use with JEPPFD-Pro. The interface worked perfectly, however, I have struggled to get continuous satellite coverage. I fly the A330 around Europe and the USA. It will lock on and give coverage for 90 minutes with no issues and then for the remainder of the flight no coverage at all. This has happened across the Atlantic and also within Europe.

Good product, poor support from the manufacturer

  • By A Customer from Hartford CT USA on Thursday, October 17, 2013
  • Pros: Locks on satellites quickly and stays locked during flight, multiple connections via bluetooth.
  • Cons: Poor vendor support
  • Review: mypilotstore gives great service. The vendor that markets the XGPS160 not so much.

On 10/10/13 I emailed their tech support with the following; In looking through the FAQs for the XGPS160 several references are made to the SkyPro app yet no such app exists for Android on Google Play. Do you have an Android version available? How do Android users check their firmware version and update if necessary?

On 10/16 they replied with, We will have the app but it's under construction and we will need more time. I replied asking for an answer to my second question regarding firmware updates for Android users to which they replied on the following day (literally) Thank you and will be able to do the update when the app is available unless you want me to check and see if the unit is shipped back if one of guys can have it done.

So basically after waiting 7 days for a complete reply the best they have to offer is a non-committal answer about an app that is somewhere in development and if you happen to be an Android user you will have to ship the device back to them just to find out if you are using the latest firmware.

    You be the judge.

It is not reliable

  • By Manuel from FL USA on Wednesday, October 05, 2016
  • Pros: None
  • Cons: Signal not reliable and battery only last about 3 hours
  • Review: This product the XGPS160 does not work as promised however, the previous model XGPS150 works like a charm.
Technical support representative at Dual was blaming the app and the IPad, and when I mentioned it worked with the XGPS 150, the Dual technician blamed the iPad. The Dual technical support representative had no clue of why the XGPS160 does not work and the XGPS150 does.

Problems with Data Loggin

  • By Jack D. Morris from Nayaug, Connecticut on Friday, April 11, 2014
  • Pros: Small compact unit, good GPS/GLONASS receiver.
  • Cons: Operation seems flakey. It would be nice to have a USB windows app so that I could directly access the GPS tracking data.
  • Review: I've had the Dual XGPS160 since mid January. My plan was to use it with Foreflight. I used it hiking with the log feature as a test and it seemed to work just fine. I then used it in the car and it worked fine, displaying a moving dot on the iPad map. I then tried it with Foreflight in the car. After about 30 minutes Foreflight locked up. The only way I could clear this was by rebooting my iPad mini. Note this is a Retina with the latest update. I took the GSP unit with Foreflight on a flying trip of about 120 nautical miles. The unit seemed to work flawlessly. But on the return trip, Foreflight locked up. Fortunately I had a secondary GSP unit with moving map, so I continued with that. To get Foreflight running again, I had to reboot the iPad. Maybe this is a Foreflight problem, but I am also having a problem with the Dual XGSP160. Sometimes the iPad app shows that it is up and running, but when I access the Trip page, it doesn't read the trip log, it just sits there doing nothing. The only way to fix this is to turn off the Dual unit and then turn it back on. Also, the DUAL FAQ says that you can turn logging on and off by hitting the power button 3 times in succession. When I first got the unit, I verified this and it worked. Now when I hit the button 3 times, the Log light fails to turn on or if on fails to turn off. However, I can turn the Log light on or off via the Dual iPad app. I am suspicious that this DUAL XGPS 160 unit has a problem, since it doesn't operate as advertized. Also, on two other related questions about the unit, I contacted DUAL via their email address on two separate occasions. I have yet to get a reply, so I am concerned about their customer support. It is looking more and more like this was a bad purchasing decision.
