Definite buy

  • By Steve from Bentonville AR USA on Friday, October 11, 2019
  • Pros: Ease of use, memory settings
  • Cons: Higher priced than other brands, but you get what you pay for.
  • Review: The Icom IC-A25N is a high quality product and comes standard with the necessary accessories. I researched a number of alternatives and am pleased with the choice. I purchased it as backup comm with the added benefit of nav. I have since learned that it is very convenient and cost effective tool to listen to weather or gain clearance prior to engine start/run-up.

Perfect addition to an ultralight flying in and around a municipal airport.

  • Cons: none so far
  • Review: The Icom A25N has all the features needed to communicate and navigate, while flying an ultralight aircraft. Light in weight, easy one hand operation, headset adaptable with additional bluetooth absolutely perfect!

  • Review: I like this handheld. I carry it as a backup when I fly and whenever I am at the airport working on the property for situational awareness. High quality and programmable. Bluetooth is a bit tricky, even with Bose A20s--but it does work. Handheld will never be as strong as an aircraft radio, but better than light gun signals in a pinch.

You get your moneys worth

  • By A Customer from San Antonio TX on Saturday, September 14, 2024
  • Pros: User friendly, good design
  • Cons: Radio knob doesn’t function like a pilot would assume
  • Review: I didn’t know what to think about this transceiver before it arrived in the mail. A lot of key features that pilots appreciate weren’t expanded on in the description. It has a built in adjustable squelch for static, and can be used with a headset using the adapter.

My only discrepancy is that the two knobs on top don’t function like the knobs on the radio in the plane. The top knob changes the frequency in .005 intervals, (I’m sure there is a setting to change this), and the collar knob changes the VOLUME, not the full numbers; example 118 -> 119.

Besides that, I can tell that the range is affected by the percentage of the battery being charged, and will update this review as I have had an opportunity to test it out in the air.

Poor quality accessories

  • By Luscombe Doug from Milwaukee, WI on Monday, December 2, 2024
  • Review: While the radio works as intended, the included headset adapter failed after fewer than 10 uses. The microphone input failed when used with my David Clark Pro-X headset.

  • Review: I purchased this as an "upgrade" to my Yaesu FTA-250L, and frankly wish I hadn't. The headset Adapter failed after a few uses. The battery life isn't anything to write home about, and the number-buttons frequently become unresponsive while attempting to key in a frequency. I expected FAR better quality from ICOM. Sure it has gps, and a nav receiver. If those are must haves for you, have at it, but temper your expectations. I'm back to the cheapo 250L now. this thing lives on a shelf.
