The Private Oral Exam Guide is designed to help prepare student pilots for the oral exam portion of their checkride with FAA examiners. All the subjects a Private Pilot candidate will be tested on during checkride and review flights are covered here.

Using a question-and-answer format, this indispensable tool lists the questions most likely to be asked by examiners and provides succinct, ready responses. Instructors rate the oral exam guide series as excellent resources for students in both planning for what to expect during the airplane checkride, and mastering the subject matter. This guide is also great preparation for flight reviews, aircraft transitions, and as general refresher material.

This 13th edition has been updated to further align with the Airman Certification Standards (ACS), with new information added or expanded on these subjects: weather services, regulations, airport operations, airspace, and flight planning. Includes a Risk Assessment matrix and Flight Risk Assessment Tool (FRAT). Exam Tips and Notes have been added throughout.

Scenario-based questions have become an integral part of the Practical Test and an important tool in an examiner’s toolbox. Student responses to these “open-ended” questions demonstrate an understanding of the big picture and convey the practical application of what’s important and why. Noted SBT expert, Arlynn McMahon (2009 National Flight Instructor of the Year, and recipient of the 2010 NATA Award for Excellence in Pilot Training Award), provides insight into these scenario-based questions and will be invaluable to students preparing for their checkride.

Questions, answers, and explanations in this guide were researched using FAA documents (identified so readers know where to go for further study) as well as through interviews with FAA examiners. References for further study are provided throughout the book, and additional study questions conclude each chapter.

Better than nothing.

  • By John from Ottawa Lake MI USA on Thursday, April 21, 2022
  • Pros: It contained some helpful information.
  • Review: This book was a relaticely useful study guide. It contained some information that was part of the oral checkride. However the main frustration I had with it was at the end of each chapter it gave a list of questions to expect on the checkride, many of which were on the checkride, but did not provide the answers to those questions, nor were the answers contained in the text of the study guide. Studying the questions without knowing the answers is not helpful, and having to constantly look the answers up in outside sources is time consuming and difficult. A more comprehensive study guide would be much more helpful.

  • By Greg Curtis, CFII from Raymond ME USA on Tuesday, December 29, 2020
  • Pros: Great questions with thorough answers and references
  • Review: This book is really great on days when we're delayed for takeoff and I can use the ready made questions to get my student pilot ready for the approaching check ride.

A must have study resource

  • By charles n cox CFI, CFII, CFIME, ATP on Sunday, August 09, 2020
  • Pros: all good stuff
  • Review: The oral exam is a tough exam to prepare for because the range is so wide for the possible questions and also the best and most correct answers. This guide along with the other oral exam guides are probably the best money you will ever invest in your piloting endeavor.

Great prep for the check ride

  • By Lewis from Raymond ME USA on Thursday, November 07, 2019
  • Pros: Covers all areas
  • Review: This document has ensured my private pilot candidates all of the areas they can be exposed to during their first check ride. And as a result, each has passed on their first shot with the DPE. The orals are the one area an IP tries to prepare their candidates to the best of their abilities, but you just don't know what the DPE is going to ask or how they are going to ask questions needing an understanding of the regulations, not just rote memory.

Worth the money

  • By Lewis from Raymond ME USA on Monday, December 10, 2018
  • Pros: Covers all the areas
  • Review: Great prep book for the oral. Due to constant changes by the FAA, do not think this is the only thing to reference. However, it pretty much covers the questions an examiner is going to ask. The other questions asked are the ones concerning the questions you missed on the knowledge test.

Great Investment

  • By Nijat on Tuesday, January 23, 2018
  • Pros: Simple, easy to use, very knowledgeable
  • Review: This book is definitely a must, it has capitalized on many things that i have overlooked in my studying, it has direct questions and direct answers, no fuss just straight to the point, in fact it has so much, it over prepares you for the oral, it has literally every possible question an examiner could ask.

Q: I'm needing the PTS book for signal engine planes is this what I need?

A: This Practical Test Standards (PTS) for Private Pilot is no longer being used as of June 15, 2016.  The FAA has transitioned from the PTS to the new Airman Certification Standards.  You can find the Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards book here which is the direct replacement to the PTS.
