Not Perfect, But Way Good Enough

  • Cons: Apparently not quite keeping up with FAA changes
  • Review: Organized in chapters by subject matter (Aerodynamics, Systems, Weather, etc), this book gives a short discussion of important concepts, followed by all the FAA test questions that pertain to the concepts. Questions are marked as to applicability (ALL, AIR, RTC, LTA, etc), so you can easily skip the questions that don't pertain to your rating. All the answers are provided, and explanations for why the incorrect answers are incorrect.

    I read this book cover-to-cover 3 times, answered all the test questions and worked all the test problems. I did a little bit of outside research on the concepts that were new to me (I've never flown ADFs or HSIs, for instance). I got a 98% on my test.

    My only gripe is that I saw a few questions on the test that weren't in this book. Maybe that's to be expected, I don't know.

  • Review: This was my third purchase for my third rating. It follows the others in format and readability. It allowed me to read each chapter then answer the questions. This format, coupled with on line study exams was pretty successful. In two weeks, after receipt of the book I read it twice and got a 91%. I like the ASA books for this type of studying.

  • Review: So far it seems to be providing all the info I need for a pretty comprehensive review of stuff I mostly studied in early PPL and instrument training (without superfluous pages on the history of everything). Not sure it would be a good way to tackle these subjects if they were brand new. I gave it 4 instead of 5 only because it is a little cumbersome to have to rifle through sections dedicated to airships and helicopters etc when I am only interested in the airplane side of things, but I knew that going in so not a huge issue.
