Garmin GPSMAP 496 (Americas)

In-stock and available for immediate shipment.

What's New?
The GPSMAP 496 builds on the reputation of Aviation Consumer's Product of the Year - our GPSMAP 396. Additional features offered by the new 496 include: Garmin's SafeTaxi airport diagrams for over 650 airports; AOPA's Airport Directory data; Garmin's altitude sensitive Smart Airspace alerts; enhanced high-resolution terrain; private airports and heliports; faster 5 hertz GPS update rate; and pre-loaded automotive maps of North America or Europe. The near real-time Panel Page, with its accelerated GPS update rate, is worth the upgrade alone. XM WX Satellite Weather(TM) and audio entertainment packages are optionally available. Plus, the unit's built-in turn-by-turn automotive database makes it an all-purpose, go-anywhere navigator for the dashboard as well as the cockpit.

Fly smarter and safer with the GPSMAP 496 on board. This "know-it-all" mini-MFD puts more power and information at your fingertips than any other portable handheld in the history of aviation. Similar to the GPSMAP 396, the 496 combines satellite datalink weather with a detailed color map and terrain alerting, then takes it up a notch with even more high-end software and features. The 496 is a "must have" for any pilot.

View Your Position on Taxiways
Garmin SafeTaxi(TM) data provides detailed taxiway diagrams and position information for over 650 U.S. airports. Preloaded on the unit, this information helps you navigate unfamiliar airports with confidence and shows your aircraft's exact position on the field.

Easily Access AOPA Airport Directory
Look up taxi services, plan an overnight, choose fuel stops and more with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Airport Directory included on the GPSMAP 496. This indispensable reference guide puts a wealth of airport and travel information at your fingertips. It offers detailed information for over 5,300 U.S. airports along with the names and phone numbers of thousands of FBOs, plus ground transportation, lodging, restaurants, local attractions and more.

Receive Altitude-Sensitive Smart Airspace(TM) Alerts
When in the air, Garmin's new Smart Airspace feature makes it easier than ever to identify what airspace lies ahead. Smart Airspace automatically highlights airspace close to the pilot's current altitude and de-emphasizes airspace away from the current altitude, which gives you increased situational awareness.

Navigate with Enhanced Terrain and Aviation Databases
The GPSMAP 496 features a built-in Jeppesen database with terrain and obstacle databases. Fly with informed confidence thanks to the enhanced, higher-resolution terrain database. With over ten times as much data as the 396's terrain database, the 496 provides even more visual reference. It monitors your current position in relation to surrounding terrain to provide alerts. Even customize your own minimum clearance levels to receive terrain cautions. With the unit's Jeppesen(R) database, you can view your flight route displayed over contour terrain mapping. The addition of private airports and heliports to the database provides even more navigation and emergency "nearest" options.

Enjoy Faster Update Rate for Maps and Indicators
For added realism and safety, the 496 updates map data and "Panel" page instruments at 5 Hz, a significantly faster update rate that gives you a smoother, near "real-time" presentation of your aircraft's analog indicators, such as the HSI and turn coordinator.

Make Informed Decisions with Optional Weather and Traffic
With an optional subscription to XM WX Satellite Weather(TM) and the included GXM 30A smart antenna, you'll have access to constantly-updated, high-resolution weather data for the U.S, right in the cockpit. Weather information includes Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD), Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METARs), Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs), Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), Lightning and Winds Aloft, plus more and can be laid directly over the 496's Jeppesen and topographic map databases. Add a Garmin Mode S transponder, and the 496 will also display TIS traffic alerts that identify surrounding air traffic.

Navigate by Air, Land or Sea
Garmin's GPSMAP 496 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator(R) NT street maps and a hefty points of interest (POIs) database, including motels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply enter a destination, and you're automatically routed with voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions. In addition, GPSMAP 496 accepts customized points of interest such as school zones and safety cameras and includes proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs. Add optional BlueChart(R) g2 data cards, and turn the 496 into a color chartplotter.

Fantastic GPS
by Mike from San Diego CA USA

Pros: feature rich
Cons: battery life when using XM antenna
Review: I am an EMS helo pilot and our birds are equipped with the Garmin 430. My GPSMAP 496 gives me much better situational awareness and allows me to get celestial info for NVG use, store flown tracks for debrief, use the 3000 user defined waypoints to preload all of our hospital and load positions. The obstacle database lets me know if there are any known obstacles near scene locations and the terrain map is great during night flights when unaided. I highly recommend this unit

Review: I love the GPS. I signed up for the weather option and it has made flying so much better.

Great GPS
by A Customer from Shreveport LA USA

Review: A little pricey.... but now that I have it, I can't imagine going anywhere without it. Learn something new about it each time I fly.

Good but frustrating manual
by A Customer from Carson City, NV

Pros: Well engineered
Cons: Manual is extremely poor for a GPS novice
Review: Try giving this to your wife and ask her to program a goto. Good luck. The manual was written by an engineer who should have asked his wife to program it first.

Otherwise this GPS is probably the best portable there is.

by A Customer from Menomonie, WI
Pros: Wx, terrain, XM music for the copilot, streets database, fast update
Cons: trips menu tedious, lacks airways, adding approaches not straightforward, no glideslope emulation, erratic power-plug fit (too tight in some instances), multiple wires out the back
Review: This is a good product overall; in terms of usability, the menu structure is not as ergonomically useful as one would ideally like. Adding approaches to the current flight plan takes too many keystrokes. Finding and displaying information about the destination or the next waypoint is not sufficiently straightforward. (The old Apollo Precedus has much better menu ergonomics.) It should be possible to 'cable' the several wires, especially the two antennas and their wires.

Previous Customer Questions For Garmin GPSMAP 496 (Americas):
Ask Your Own Question
On Sunday, May 04, 2008 a customer asked:
Q:
Will a GXM 30 atenna work the same as a GXM 30A for the 496? I ordered a replacement but made that mistake
A: The GXM 30A is very similar to the GXM 30 except it does not have the magnet.

On Monday, March 24, 2008 a customer asked:
Q:
How do I get the XM Radio music from a Garmin 496 into my headset? Do I need to buy some kind of adapter?
A: You would need to have either an intercom system or a headset that has a music in jack.  Many of the new headsets from companies such as LightSPEED, Sennheiser, and SoftComm have a built-in music jack to accommodate the XM radio.

On Monday, March 10, 2008 a customer asked:
Q:
Considering GPS496 (or GPS396) with zaon PCAS XRX. Can I add the safetaxi(tm) feature to the GPS396?
A: The SafeTaxi feature is only available on the GPSMAP 496 and cannot be added to the Garmin GPSMAP 396.

On Wednesday, February 20, 2008 a customer asked:
Q:
The $35 Jeppesen map update you refer to in other posts, does that update everything on the unit (i.e. taxi ways, obstacles, airports, VORs...)? Some competitors are claiming it costs $975 per year to keep the unit updated. Which is it?
A: The current prices from Garmin for the different updates (found here) are shown below.  Many pilots will update the Jeppesen Database on a regular basis but only periodically update the other databases.  It is your decision about which databases should be updated and how often for safe flight.
  • $35.00 for the Jeppesen Database that contains the general aviation data (NavData) used by pilots (Airports, VORs, NDBs, SUAs, etc.).
  • $35.00 for the obstacle database that contains the locations of towers, tall buildings, and other vertical obstructions that could be a potential source of hazard to pilots.
  • $150.00 for the terrain database that contains the elevation data which represents the topography of the earth. Terrain database updates are not cyclic in nature and are not updated on a regularly scheduled basis. This is because the data does not change regularly as do man-made objects (towers, airports, VORs, etc.). Updates to terrain data are primarily driven by new data sources and/or error correction.
  • $35.00 for the SafeTaxi database that contains the graphical depiction of airport diagrams. The SafeTaxi database is currently only avialable for the U.S. coverage region which contains information on limited airports within the U.S.
  • And, $35.00 for the AOPA database that contains additional aviation POI data (point of interest). The AOPA database is currently only avialable for the U.S. coverage region which contains some of the airports within the U.S.  AOPA data is released four times per year on the 15th day of each quarter.

On Wednesday, February 06, 2008 a customer asked:
Q:
can you see other aircrafts on the screen of this GPS system?
A: Yes, it will display nearby aircraft ONLY if you also have the Zaon PCAS XRX and the 396/496 interface cable.  Without the Zaon products, you will not get any aircraft traffic alerts.

On Tuesday, October 23, 2007 a customer asked:
Q:
I have a Garmin 295 and want to upgrade to the 496 - my biggest complaint of the 295 is the excruciatingly slow speeds on the scrolling buttons -any chance the 496 buttons work any faster?
A: Yes, the 496 has a much faster processor than any of the previous handheld aviation models. For added realism and safety, the 496 updates map data and "Panel" page instruments at 5 Hz, a significantly faster update rate that gives you a smoother, near "real-time" presentation of your aircraft's analog indicators, such as the HSI and turn coordinator.

On Friday, October 12, 2007 a customer asked:
Q:
When looking for a Garmin GPSMAP 496 I see the following: Garmin GPSMAP 496 (Atlantic) Garmin GPSMAP 496 (Americas) What is the difference between the (Atlantic) or (Americas) version and why the price difference.
A: There are three different database coverages for the Garmin product:
Americas - North, South and Central America (includes Hawaii)
Atlantic International - Europe, Africa
Pacific International - Eastern Europe, Asia, Middle East and the South Pacific (includes Hawaii).
We only sell the Americas version. If you are going to be using it in North America you would have to get the Americas database.

On Monday, September 24, 2007 a customer asked:
Q:
I am a few months until I take delivery of an aircraft with a 496 installed. Is their a flight simulator program or Garmin software that allows you to practice flight planning and navigation on a home computer?
A: Yes, I would recommend the VFlite Garmin GPSMap 496 Interactive Guide.

On Tuesday, September 18, 2007 a customer asked:
Q:
For the Garmin 496. What is required to update the Jeppson data base. Who does this and what is involved? What is a rough estimate of the cost to update?
A: The database updates are purchased directly from Garmin on an as-needed basis. They are updated based on new Jeppesen data every 28 days. When you purchase this from Garmin (current price is $35.00 per update) you will download it over the Internet and use the USB cable to connect the Garmin 496 to your computer and install the update.

On Monday, September 10, 2007 a customer asked:
Q:
How much is the XM subscription for weather?
A: The current prices for XM WX Satellite Weather are $29.99 for the Lite and $49.99 for the full weather feed plus a $75.00 activiation fee for either. The Lite version does not contain High Resolution Canadian Radar, Canadian Weather Warnings, Echo Tops, AIRMETs, Lightning, Freezing Levels, Winds Aloft (at altitude), SIGMETs, Severe Weather Storm Tracks, Satellite Mosaic, or Surface Analysis.
