What a Deal Flight Computer! by Mac from Sunrise FL USA
Pros: Easy to operate out of the box. Cons: Battery time ... maybe it was bad batteries?? Review: My grandson is still commenting on his Pathfinder flight computer. He said his instructor (soon to be) is telling other students they should consider ordering a CX-2 like his! Ft. Lauderdale will be your best clients!

Does everything I want by Jim from Murfreesboro, TN
Pros: function following, rugged, menus are useful once you get used to them Cons: Poor lighting-could really use a backlight but I don't use it while flying either Review: I won't even address the absence of backlighting because we all know it. I love the fact that this calculator has function following-REALLY makes it easy on multi-part problems. I am using it for studying for the AGI and love how quickly I can move from function to function. I have figured out how to do most of the things from a mechanical E-6B and much prefer this to the "whiz-wheel". I know how to do both so no lecturing. The case is rugged (I am hard on my stuff) and the contour on the back is so you can hold it in your hand and punch keys. If they fix the lighting and work on the key sensitivity it will be the perfect aviation computer. I love that it's FAA exam certified

A great buy! by Kyle from Lemont IL USA
Pros: Easy to use, very fast, saves a lot of time. Review: It is a great tool for all pilots. It cuts down a lot of time with flight planning, especially if you decide to go for a flight dispatch certificate. It takes a few tries getting used to the buttons and where certain menu items are, but after practice, it works great.

Easier to use than the slide rule type flight computer. Too bad it's not cheaper and more powerful by Alex C. from Ashland, OR
Pros: Easier and less error prone than circular slide rule Cons: More expensive, less capable, than it should be in this day and age. Review: Given the current state of calculator technology for $80 it should be possible to make a calculator that does all these flight calculatons, and more far more easily than this, in a far smaller more elegant package.
That said, I find this -- once you get a little practice -- FAR easier and less error prone than using the traditional circular slide rule flight computer.
In fact, for many of the written test questions that provide graphs and figures for you to answer the question, you can do them far easier without even looking at the provided graphs by doing them on the calculator.
In particular, questions about how much the density altitude changes when the pressure altitude or temperature changes, or at a certain airport surface, are easier done on this calculator than on the graphs.

Love it! Needs a backlight by Marc from Tulsa,OK
Cons: No backlight Review: Great product. I love the variety and ease of calculations. I have used mine for three years without failure. Biggest complaint is lack of a backlight. I constantly see advertisements showing the display backlit though it does not have this feature. I have petitioned ASA about it with no response.

Very good product, needs an update though. by Tom from New York City
Pros: Outstanding functionality and ease of use. Cons: Outdated screen has got to go. Review: This computer is very easy to use and does everything you need it to. It's gotten me through many exams and flight plans. It's substantial enough to get knocked around a bit and has nice big buttons that are easy to see and push. I've had mine for nearly ten years now and it hasn't let me down. I prefer it to any iPhone or iPad app.
The only issue, and it's a bigger issue now than it was when the unit was first introduced, is the screen. It's non-backlit and low resolution, which is pretty much unacceptable these days, what with display technology being what it is. I'm not saying it needs anything fancy, but a backlight and slightly better screen is a must.

Love it! by Curt from Erda UT USA
Pros: Easy to learn Review: Learn to use an E6B first. Then you'll appreciate how well the CX-2 Pathfinder works. This thing is a snap to learn, easy to move from one calculation to the next and its accurate. The instruction book is great with easy to follow instructions and test questions. In 90 minutes any primate can work wonders with a CX-2. Even me.

Useful not bad organization by Gary V from Dallas GA USA
Pros: needed formulas Cons: menus poorly organized Review: Has so many useful formulas for the FAA tests and for flight planning that you basically need it. The cool thing is that after you calculate something the other formulas will default to using the inputs you just used. The menus are so poorly organized that it takes a lot of time to go back and forth between leg times and fuel used etc.
For cross country planning I took the time to set up Excel to do all the calculations for me.

Excellent unit; some people would complain... by A Customer from Mesa, Arizona
Pros: Does everything I need it to do, and reasonably priced. Cons: No backlight, so what? Review: ...if they were being hung with a new rope. This is the second CX-2 I've purchased and it is identical to the first one. It's fine, and it does the job. So you have to look at the display to see what you are doing, poor baby! You want to pay $300 for a flight computer so you can feel the buttons click when you push them? And so you can use up batteries three times faster so you can have a backlight? Why are you using a flight computer in the cockpit at night for? It's a flight planning tool; use it on the ground, and pay attention to what you are doing. It's not flimsy; it's robust and the plastic cover slides on and off the way it is supposed to. The CX-2 is good value for the money.

I like it so far! by Larry R. Rogers from Mobile, Al.
Pros: Very intuitive to use, decent manual Cons: like others have said, no back light Review: My CX2 arrived yesterday and I started playing with it tonight. So far, there have been no issues working the sample problems. Other reviews mentioned a curved back that made it wobble while siting on the deck. Yes, it has a curved back, but if the cover is attached to the back side as designed, it is rock soild. Others have mentioned that the keys REALLY have to pressed hard to actually get the entry to "take". I have not found this to be the case. I have been using "normal" key pressure with out problem. After 20 minutes with the CX2 I am way more comfortable than I was with the manual computer after a week of messing with it. I would have no problems recommending this product to a friend.

Good . . . But Could Be Better by Lon from Santa Monica CA USA
Pros: Easy to learn and use. Cons: See Review above. Review: The CX-2 is easy to use, and the instructions make it easy to learn to use. But, as other reviewers have said before, the CX-2 has two undesireable characteristics. It's necessary to press the keys very hard -- much harder than any other handheld (non-aviation) calculator (including very inexpensive ones) I've ever used. And some simple calculations yield results that are just a fraction off, as a matter of simple arithmetic -- not so far off that the results would affect flying or test-taking, but strangely off, none-the-less.

Inaccurate calculations, NO BACKLIGHT, difficult to use by Larry from Palm, PA
Pros: Tough plastic case requires no cover Cons: There are many. See my review. Review: The plastic casing and snap-on keyboard cover are good features. Be careful to slide the cover off when removing it, and snap (do not slide) it on when replacing it. There is a protective rubber lining on the inside of the cover. Sliding the cover onto the unit may catch the lining against the keys and peel it off. The previous review by "A Customer From Philadelphia, PA" (February 26, 2007) describes the same experience I have with rounding inaccuracies and lack of numerical precision. I wrote to the company and received the exact same explanation, so the customer rep obviously has a stock answer that he/she uses to cut and paste. It's clear that the rep has no idea of how computers work regarding binary calculations. I have programmed computers professionally for 32 years and never had such a problem. The CX-2 has a serious bug in the calculation functions which the manufacturer refuses to admit and, even worse, refuses to fix. Answering the question with such a lame explanation is insulting to users of this product. The box and website show a beautifully backlit screen with blue lighting. Can we get more deceptive than this? There is NO BACKLIGHTING WHATSOEVER in this computer, blue or otherwise. Imagine the fun I have while trying to use it in a darkened cockpit. Totally useless. There is no tactile feedback to indicate when a key has been pressed. The keys must be pushed in VERY FIRMLY to enter data. Sadly, the pressure required to activate the keys is not consistent among all of them. A user must be careful to watch the screen during each key depression to verify that it entered properly. A good amount of practice is required to become fluent in performing flight calculations. The menus are not laid out intuitively. Some menu descriptions are cryptic and minimalist in conveying their meanings. Luckily, the last calculation for each function is saved, eliminating the need to reenter numbers. For example, after figuring out groundspeed, another calculation that requires groundspeed (such as estimated flight time) as one of the variables will already have it entered in the appropriate field. There is no Clear key for erasing this memory. The only way to do that is by removal of the batteries.

Useless in Dim Lighting by Dave - USAF from Maryland
Pros: Might make a good paperweight Review: I wish I had read the reviews posted here before I bought it. The only reason I gave it one star is because there was no option for zero stars. For starters it came with near dead batteries. Naturally I figured fresh batteries would fix the dim display. Wrong. After replacing the batteries I adjusted the contrast in accordance with the manual all the way up and all the way down and at its optimum adjustment the display is better than it was out of the box with near dead batteries but is still very difficult to see unless I am in a brightly lit room. Of course that means if you are flying at night you would need to hold a small flashlight in your teeth (or whatever) to see anything in a dimly lit cockpit. The display does not look anything at all like what is shown on the box or what is on the manufacturer's website. I suppose I may have a defective unit but if so that may be a common problem since I see at least one other reviewer that had the same complaint.

nt as expected. by Mirage pilot from Brooklyn NY USA
Pros: advance calculations of pilots made easy. Quick conversions available. Cons: basic calculations made difficult. No memory. no solar charging. 3 AAA batteries rather than smart Li-Ion .Cheap outlook Review: Provides many useful functions bt lacks basic scientific calculations. could've provided with sin,cos etc functions. buttons hard to press. Cover made of very low quality. Lacks backlit screen. Lacks solar recharging and poor choice of AAA batteries. Li-ion battery is suggested. Havent been able to fully explore the functionality but the outlook and lack of basic functions has caused dissapointment. I would rather pay more and have all the above mentioned features rather than having the existing product at this price.

A truly fantastic help in flight preparation by Jean-Michel from Warranwood VIC Australia
Pros: The ability to carry forward the results of various operations for a number of cascading calculations: easy to use and a great time saver. Cons: A minor point regarding terminology: some countries use the term "track" instead of "true course", and this could perhaps have been acknowledge, if not on the computer itself, at least in the instructions booklet. Review: The ASA CX-2 went well beyond all my expectations. It dispenses with superfluous gimmickry, and its various menus and functions are well presented and easy to use. It significantly simplifies the flight preparation process while simultaneously bringing greater accuracy to it. This computer has deserves a place of choice in every pilot-bag.

It works... by Bill from Atascadero CA USA
Pros: Better than using an E6B Cons: Buttons are difficult to operate, and screen is hard to see. Review: It works. Most of the time. The equation "19.2-10.5=" will give you an answer of "8.700001" Makes me wonder about the rest of the calculations. The buttons require too much movement or pressure to register. Cannot type numbers quickly. Have to check each time a number is pressed to see if it actually shows up. Menus are not user friendly and learning curve is long. The order in which the calculations must be done is a bit counter intuitive to me. Screen is hard to read at any angle other than direct viewing, not to mention the lack of a back lit screen. Plastic cover is cheap and does not slide all the way. Has to be popped off and on. The advanced calculations do all seem to be accurate (except for the example given above). It just seems like it is grossly over-priced for the physical quality of the product. Although the mathematics are fairly accurate. I will buy something else when it comes time for a new one.

Pros: Easy to use and does the needed calculations Cons: IT REALLY NEEDS BACKLIGHTING Review: The un-backlit LED screen is hard enough to read in your office, let alone in a moving airplane. Its going to be tough doing any calculations on the fly. The keys were a little spongy as well, it would be nicer if they clicked more like an HP calculator. The calculation logic is good though

Sorry Sporty's electronic E6B, this one wins for one big reason by A Customer from Ann Arbor MI USA
Pros: good hard plastic slip over case included Cons: wish it had more functions to pick from like descent profiles Review: Sorry Sporty's electronic E6B, this one wins for one big reason. My Sporty's electronic E6B kept turning on uncommanded and killing the batteries. I tried everything even cutting the on off rubber button down so it wouldn't get bumped. Nothing would cure this problem. Many times I would open the battery compartment and find battery white crust everywhere. This ASA unit is a plastic sliding hard case so the on/off button can't get bumped to the on possition. Not really sure who's software version is better. Not nuts about the functions of the ASA unit. Why don't they have some simple descent profiles?

You need this if your airplane does not have a pencil sharpener! by Dave from Olympia WA USA
Pros: Easy to read and understand Cons: Hey, It's dark out, I need a backlight. Review: This computer is very affordable and very intuative. It is quick enough to make calculations in flight or on the ground. It has more functions than you will need. Using the old slide rule is always vexed by marking with a pencil that works. Very good, but could use a couple improvements by PlaneCrazy from West Des Moines IA USA
Pros: Fairly intuitive to learn Cons: Needs a backlit screen and buttons that are easier to push Review: As a student pilot, I found the CX-2 fairly intuitive to use. I had used the software version of the calculator in the ASA Private Pilot Prepware 08 product and plan to use the CX-2 for my FAA written. This flight computer is a bit pricey for what it delivers. Overall, I'm satisfied with the product, but have two suggestions to make it better (besides lowering the price a bit). #1: Give it a backlit screen for better visibility. #2: The buttons are harder to push than necessary.

Excellent softeware, terrible casing by Eduardo from Miami Beach FL USA
Pros: Excellent interface, easy to use, looks sexy Cons: Need to push buttons hard, difficult to read at night, cheap plastic, second button undoes itself when pressed twice Review: There are only a handful of aviation calculators on the market, and this one seemed to be the most promising. Focusing on its functionality and its software, it is outstanding! However, it is made in China and its construction is less than stellar. The plastic is very light and the cover does not fit easily over it, so when I take it off, I just leave it off. Its supposed to fit on the other side snuggly--it doesn't very well. The buttons need to be pushed all the way through, otherwise, you didn't input the value. This is overcome by using it slowly and meticulously. This can be a problem in turbulence, though. The screen can be hard to read at night with a flashlight. And be careful with teh second function button--press it twice and it undoes itself. I'm used to graphing calculators, so using this interface was a breeze. It has made my flying much more accurate and planning flights has become a joy. I would still buy it, but I wish ASA would upgrade the material, the buttons, and that pesky second function button. Again, I think it is a great buy.

Great product. Hands down against the competition by Adam from Plantation FL USA
Pros: Easy to operate, well thought-out interface Cons: No backlight. A bit too large. Buttons must be pressed firmly. Review: I was almost ready to click purchase on the Sporty's E6B flat flight computer when I read the reviews. Most folks didn't like the battery life and the way it accidentally turned on while in your bag. I looked at the ASA CX-2 and made my decision. Problem is that Sporty's charges a flat $12 rate for shipping. Yuk. mypilotstore was $4.95, so I ordered. Great computer, and easy to operate. The 2 issues I have with the unit is that there is no backlight for night flights, nor protection for the on switch if it gets pressed. The only saving grace is that you keep it in the hard protector case, which keeps the button safe from being pressed. I've since been given a Sporty's E6B flat computer from a friend, and I am really glad I purchased the ASA CX-2.

The best flight computer I've used...but by Joel from Los Angeles CA USA
Pros: Ease of use, once learned. Can replace all slide rule calculations. Cons: Accuracy is questionable when calculating in a field. Review: I've compared this flight computer to the one that is from Sporty's. This one is much better in one way: it will retain results from one calculated area to another. So, if I first calculate my density altitude, it is remembered in other areas where I need to use the same information. A very nice touch. The one gripe I have with this is that, as noted before, the devices does provide some rounding errors. ASA's claim is that it would not affect the results in any meaningful way. In fact, I know of at least one problem on the FAA written exam where the results provided by this computer would product an incorrect calculation, and thus, a wrong answer. The key is to plug in a number with only two decimal places when performing calculations within a field. That is a work-around, but shouldn't be necessary. Okay, I do have another gripe. The buttons don't always register the first time. Overall, however, this is a great device to have. The slide rule is obsolete.

Functional but way too bigger than i thought! by Joseph from Roswell GA USA
Pros: Funtional as publicised Cons: Form factor is way too big for small planes Review: It has all the expected funtions which are pretty easy to use.
The timer is almost useless since you have to fiddle with numbered buttons (like 1 to start, 2 to stop etc.) which is impracticle.
My biggest gripe is the form factor. In these days of modern electronic devices i would expect something sleeker than this. I do understand the need to have bigger buttons for inflight usage but the whole form factor makes it difficult to adopt in a small cockpit (i fly a 182).
I used to have a sporty's regular one (not the flat one). I think it's a little easier to use and the cursor buttons is a definite advantage to fiddle with numbers.
I contemplated returning this one but decided to hold on to this anyway as in reality you use the device mostly outside cockpit.

Great buy by Radu from PAO, CA
Pros: speed, multifunctions Cons: you will never learn to use you E6B, or get a headache trying to understand it Review: I own an E6B as well, and it's very imprecise and slow. This calculator makes flight planning easy, fast and error free

Pros: Promts you for all the information it needs to figure out the answer Cons: Remember if you don't know which option to use, select Review: It makes the math a lot easier, for the test as well as everyday flying. I just took the test and got a 93. My husband too the test a week later & would not look at the computer until after I took my test. He was doing everything manually and got a 78 on an online practice test. But the night before his test he was getting formulas confused. I showed him how to use it & he got an 88 the next day on his test. The only confusing part is remembering which option to go into. If you have a question on heading (with wind factors, etc) from one city to the next and they give you the true airspeed in the question. In the computer, you need to elect "Flight", "Plan Leg", "Hgd/gspd". Everything else is easy as it is menu driven. We both highly recommend it.

Pros: Functions can be accessed quickly once you get to know the device. Easy to carry, does not require a case for protection. Cons: Buttons must be pressed VERY firmly and deeply, otherwise characters may be missed during entry. I don't accept the Review: Sorry, but I'm not a believer in this model. The CX-2 has some good features but overall I am disappointed.
Screen is often difficult to read due to poor contrast. Increasing the contrast to make characters darker will also make the background darker, thereby further decreasing legibility.
Photo on website shows a display that appears to be backlit (with a bright blue background) but there is no backlight.
Time zone calculations are explained improperly in the manual. Their instructions result in time zones calculating in the reverse direction. This is NOT a problem with the calculator, just the manual.
Found a tendency for the numerical calculator to be inaccurate in certain situations -- entering 51.5 + 14.2 + 13.7 gives a result of 79.39999 instead of 79.4. Here is an explanation from an ASA tech support rep:
"Thank you for contacting ASA with your CX-2 question. There is no flaw in the unit, your CX-2 Pathfinder calculator is working as it was designed.
To help clarify the situation with the perceived accuracy of our CX-2 calculator, the CX-2 is a binary device that records information in decimal notation. This will occasionally cause some issues of rounding such as those you have seen. For the same reason, if you go back to check prior entries you will sometimes see something displayed slightly differently than what you originally entered. This again is binary storage and rounding.
Eight decimal digits is the maximum accuracy of the chip used in the CX-2. I've never seen a case where an answer was wrong enough to be a problem at this level of accuracy. Our competitor's calculator is only accurate to 6 places. Slide Rules such as an E6B are generally considered good to 3 places - sometimes it is possible to get 4 digits out of it."

Pros: 3 clicks to any answer Cons: Answers not easy to decipher from the instruction book. Review: I exicuted each example in the instruction manual and found a couple of errors in the steps explained. Contacted the company and the head of the department agreed that there was an error in the instruction book. Generally found the instruction book to "assume" too much. Instruction books should be step by step instructions for anyone who DOESN'T know how to operate the equipment. When assumptions are made it is a bad manual.

Review: Works well as described. I really like the conversion functions--just type a number and hit the 2nd key and the conversion, like SM -> NM for miles to nautical miles. It is thicker than a regular calculator.
