Gleim Private Pilot Written Exam Guide

The primary purpose of Private Pilot and Recreational Pilot FAA Written Exam is to provide you with the easiest, fastest, and least expensive means of passing the FAA Private Pilot - Airplane knowledge test, which is the knowledge (written) test required before you can obtain your private pilot certificate.

Additionally, this book can be used in preparation for the following FAA knowledge tests:

  1. Recreational Pilot - Airplane (RPA), which is required if you are working toward a recreational pilot (airplane) certificate.
  2. Private Pilot - Airplane Transport (PAT), which is required if you currently hold a recreational pilot certificate and are working to obtain a private pilot (airplane) certificate.
This books helps change the FAA pilot knowledge (written) test process from a memorization marathon to a learning opportunity and experience. You get higher test scores in less study time. Seven of the major differences between the Gleim Private Pilot and Recreational Pilot FAA Written Exam books and most other available books and software are:
  1. Only airplane-related questions and study materials are included in our books.
  2. Comprehensive explanations of each question are provided, including explanations of why each answer is incorrect.
  3. Answer explanations are NEXT to each question, NOT at the back of the book.
  4. All FAA test questions are reorganized into logical topics (FARs, weather, navigation, etc.)
  5. Provides outlines explaining the concepts tested at the beginning of each chapter so you can study and learn the material before you answer an study the test questions.
  6. A detailed index assists you in finding topics and questions you wish to study.
  7. Provides practice tests using the FAA's mix of question topics

A Tremendous Resource for the Written Exam
by Paul from Greenwich CT USA

Pros: Concise information, easy to understand - very helpful
Cons: None
Review: I have been using the Gleim Exam guide in parallel with Ground School classes at my Flight School. While the classes provide a thorough review, the Gleim guide summarizes the key points for each topic in a very easy to understand manner. The questions with a review of the answers are also extremely useful and really help to reinforce the information. I would highly recommend this book to any student pilot preparing for the exam.

Awesome study tool - easy read with good info!
by Chris from New Port Richey FL USA

Pros: Easy to read and comprehensive.
Cons: None.
Review: I bought this to get a better picture of what to expect on the FAA written test. This book is perfect for that. But I also ended up getting a simplified perspective on information I had already studied. In the end, I not only have a great idea what will be on the test, but I now have a better understanding of important information.

Pros: Priced well, well written
Review: Seems to make you hunt for answers at time which seem to help in remembering. Do not over do this. The book appears to be well written and enjoyable to learn with.  Thanks Warren.

Good product - works as advertised
by VFRHokie from Ocean Pines MD USA

Pros: portability (feels strange to say that) and the charts
Cons: yeah, the paper is flimsy but I'm not coloring on them! Seems pricey to me.
Review: Although the guide covers info available elsewhere, I liked the ease of having a book to read anywhere. Perhaps I am just old-fashioned.

The best feature is a set of paper charts; I cut them out of the guide and was actually able to lay them on a desk and work on them. Trying to plan a flight looking at a screen is not my cup of tea.

It's a great study guide.
by Dustin from Lynchburg VA USA

Pros: Portable, Accurate, and Easy to use
Cons: None yet...
Review: I needed something to help me study for my private written, and I don't think I could have chosen any better. I have access to ASA's Prepware software, but I like this better because you have something physical that you can take wherever you go.

Good overall but some misinformation
by Ben from McGregor TX USA

Pros: Good stuey guide
Cons: Some answers are wrong
Review: There are some questions that have wrong information. I don't know if this is Gleim's fault or the FAA, but it is very frustrating.

This book delivers 100% as promised
by John from Apollo PA USA

Pros: Covers a lot of material in a thorough manner.
Cons: Supplement with a live course taught by an experienced pilot.
Review: Each unit, based on areas covered by the FAA Written Exam, begins with a concise coverage of the material followed by pages of sample multiple choice Q&A's. Studying the wrong answers' explanations can be as imformative as studying the right ones. Other books such as the FAA's Airplane Flying Handbook are needed to cover other material. There's a lot more to flying than passing the FAA Written Exam.

Review: Excellent! I wish I had purchased long ago. Has been of tremendous help in studying for test.

Great Product
by Ellery from New York NY USA

Pros: Concise, Effective
Cons: Topics not covered in depth so other resources must be used
Review: This is a great study guide and I'm glad I picked it up. It doesn't go into too much detail on the subjects, it just gives you the key points you need to know for the test. This is good as it cuts to the chase, but this also means you need to complement this book with other sources. I use the jeppessen textbook and videos, as well as the KING videos as well. Also, the publisher (Gleim) also sells software which covers the exact same material as the book. I have both software and book... I suggest you purchase the software first since it offers tons (including practice exams, study sessions, etc), and then get this book if you feel more comfortable pulling out a book than a laptop all the time.

cheap, easy, and sucessful
by from

Pros: cheap, easy, efficient, and effective
Cons: none
Review: Don't waste hundreds of dollars on those DVD study-prep courses. This book is much more efficient. You can bring this study guide wherever and whenever you want, no computer or batteries required. Preceding the test questions in each chapter is a short study guide. The study guide is all you need to know in order to answer every question. This keeps studying short and simple. I studied this book chapter by chapter and went over all the questions. Took the exam for the first time and got a 95%. During the knowledge test, I recognized nearly every question from this book. I still study and review this book as a private pilot to retain my aeronautical knowledge. This is worth you time, money, and effort.

indispensable
by Cap'n Wally from Carlsbad NM USA

Pros: Straightforward content. Comprehensive.
Cons: none
Review: This publication is very well laid out. Any student can use the material to greatly improve their written test scores, given the number of vague or poorly done questions on the private pilot written exams.

Excellent Written Exam Guide
by A Customer from Fort Walton Beach FL USA

Review: This Guide does everything I was looking for: all current FAA questions (on three different/similar tests), the answers, and the explanation why/why not for each; rules and methods in performance/knowledge areas. Everything I needed to prep for the test in a very practical manner; that's what I wanted, and got.

Works well enough
by Dillon from Ocala FL USA

Pros: Works very well, inexpensive
Cons: Very, very dry reading, some concepts could be explained better
Review: The Gleim system works very well to prepare you for your test, but don't expect it to be very fun.

Excellent refresher text
by Mark from San Pedro CA USA

Pros: Very concise. Tells you exactly what you need to know.
Cons: Some folks may be tempted to use it as their only exam prep. Do not do this as it's not intended for that.
Review: As an AGI/IGI I've used the text as a final review for my students facing the Private Pilot exam with excellent results.

Gleim always comes through...
by scott from Madison AL USA

Pros: Good information, gets you ready for the test.
Cons: It ONLY gets you ready for the test, dont forget there's more.
Review: With essentially no other method of study, I passed with PPL written with a 94%, 3 weeks after recieving the book. Gleim works!

A VERY COST EFFECTIVE STUDY AID
by A Customer from Moore SC USA

Pros: Not a lot of time needed to get to the material to pass the test.
Cons: The addition of the CD-ROM would have been a good supplement.
Review: I liked the format. The Gleims got right to the point. Subsection reviews followed by actual test questions is an excellent learning aid. When I found an area that I was weak in, I immediately could go to other, more in depth references to clarify the subject. I just wish that I had purchased the Gleim CD-ROM FAA Test Prep at the same time. I think the combination would have been the most useful to get through the test material faster and more thoroughly.

Previous Customer Questions For Gleim Private Pilot Written Exam Guide:
Ask Your Own Question
On Friday, August 19, 2011 a customer asked:
Q:
Do you sell a Private Pilot Glider specific written test specific sample tests?
A: If you need the Private Pilot Glider Rating, you would want to get the ASA Private Pilot Test Prep Book.  The Gleim book only covers the airplane rating.  The ASA book covers airplane, helicopter, gyroplane, glider, free balloon and airship.

On Monday, November 23, 2009 a customer asked:
Q:
After studying the material, taking the quizes and the final test and passing them, what do I need to present to the FAA testing center to be able to test. There used to be a certificate you sent off to Gleim; is that still in the materials?
A:

With the test guide, you will need to get a local CFI to sign-off before you to take the knowledge exam with the FAA.  However, with the private pilot test prep software, you can do it yourself.  After installing the software, click the "Performance" menu and then "Instructor Sign-Off Forms".  If you have successfully answered all of the questions at least once, select Print from the sign-off screen's toolbar to print the form. Take the sign-off to your computer test site as authorization to take your test. It does NOT have to be signed by Dr. Gleim or anyone else.

On Tuesday, January 13, 2009 a customer asked:
Q:
Do you have a plastic E6B
A: You can find all of our Flight Computers here.  We have metal, heavy cardboard, and electronic types.

On Saturday, January 03, 2009 a customer asked:

Today,s date is January 2, 2009. I want to know if this book will cover the questions and answers as of this date? If not, do you have the most current one?
A: Yes, this is the most current edition and covers the test currently being administered by FAA testing centers.

On Monday, January 14, 2008 a customer asked:
Q:
Quick question. Does this book have the actual questions that will be on the FAA private pilot exam? meaning does the questions match the same verbatem?
A: Yes, these are the exact same questions and answers that you will find at the FAA testing center when taking the actual exam. It includes the entire FAA question bank for the private pilot fixed wing exam (950+ questions).

On Wednesday, September 12, 2007 a customer asked:
Q:
How many questions are there in the book? What categories are there in the book? I used to have a FAA Private Pilot Practice Exam Book, 999 questions of previous test questions and I used this material to prep for the FAA Exam, I did well. I have lost the book and wonder if this book is the same or similar?
A: This has the entire FAA question bank of approximately 1000 questions. They are broken out into the same knowledge areas that you will find on the actual FAA exam.

On Thursday, August 23, 2007 a customer asked:
Q:
Are the test questions effective from July 2007 on, since the previous book covered through June 30th, or is it for tests taken in 2008? My son will be taking the test within the month. Thanks so much.
A: The questions are current as of August 2008.
