Here are some of the most
frequently asked questions and answers about the Jeppesen CFI Renwal
Course DVD:
1. My CFI expires this
month; can I still sign up for the Jeppesen CFI Renewal Home Study Course?
Flight instructors living in the United States can sign up for the course
within 15 to 30 days of their CFI expiration with the prior approval of one
of the Airman Certification Representatives. They can be reached by calling
800-621-5377 and requesting the CFI Renewal Department. However, we
recommend you enroll at least 30 to 60 days prior to your expiration.
2. I understand that I
need to mail in my hard copy flight instructor certificate to Jeppesen. Can
I instruct without my certificate?
Your original CFI certificate is not required to be in your personal
possession while instructing if you are in the process of renewal. Should
you be ramp checked, a copy of your certificate will suffice. You may also
have the FAA inspector call Jeppesen, and they will verify your CFI status.
3. What paperwork do I
need to return to Jeppesen upon completion of the course materials?
The CFI must return:
A. 8710-1 form (must be typed or in ink and signed at the bottom)
B. Completed exercises (8)
C. Notarized affidavit/statement of identification
D. Final exam answer sheet
E. Enrollment form
F. Current CFI certificate (hard copy)
G. Xerox copy of both photo ID and pilot certificate
4. I am a Chief
Instructor or an Assistant Chief Instructor at a Part 141 school. Can I use
your program to renew?
Chief Instructors and Assistant Chief Instructors of Part 141 training
courses require a renewal of their designation every year. The Jeppesen
program will meet the annual training requirements of Section 141.79(C).
5. What paperwork will I
receive back from Jeppesen if I choose to go to my local FSDO (Flight
Standards District Office)?
Jeppesen will return to you a course graduation certificate and stamped
8710-1 form. You will also receive critiques from any missed questions on
the final exam.
6. When will I receive my
temporary and permanent certificates?
Jeppesen will issue your temporary certificate within 2 to 3 weeks of
your expiration. Your instructing privileges will not be interrupted during
the renewal process. Jeppesen forwards your completed paperwork to the FAA
Airman Certification Branch in Oklahoma City. The FAA will mail your
permanent certificate usually within 120 days.
7. Do I need a current
medical certificate to renew my CFI?
No.
8. What types of
information are covered in the DVD?
Jeppesen is constantly striving to bring you the latest information
important to flight instructors. Each topic is approved by the FAA prior to
release. Some of topics that have been covered include: Teaching
Aerodynamics, Transition Training, Flight Maneuvers and Procedures, Weather,
Human Factors, Accident Analysis, Regulations and Airspace.
9. What are the course
completion standards?
At the end of each issue of printed material, you will find a brief
completion exercise that covers all of the material for that issue. You will
need to complete the questions for each issue as you progress through the
program. When you have finished all of the exercises, complete the final
exam. A grade of 70% or better on the final exam results in a graduation
certificate being issued to you. (Your completion exercises must be sent in
with the rest of your course completion materials).
10. How can I keep my
Gold Seal on my CFI certificate if I decide to renew it through your course?
When completing the 8710-1 form, write on the top right-hand portion of
the form "Gold Seal." Provided that you send in your Gold Seal hard copy and
denote "Gold Seal" on your 8710-1 form, the FAA will ensure that your Gold
Seal designation is not lost.
11. Is this course
designed exclusively for fixed wing CFI?
Although this course is primarily geared towards fixed wing instructors, the Jeppesen CFI Renewal Course can be used by fixed wing,
rotorcraft, and glider instructors.
