Q: Are the wheels completely outside the case or are there hubs inside that take away some room?
A: Yes the wheels on this case are "inside" the bag so only a portion of the wheel is sticking out. The hub does go into the main part of the bag but only just a little. Is is designed in such a way that the wheel hubs should not affect the space inside. Here's a quick picture for you:
