The replacement battery fit like the original battery for my Garmin 496. I have already used in flight and it works great.
I did update the software in the 496 to the last version. For the update the work you need a 2.0 USB. Later generations of USBs are too fast for the 496. I even tried a 2010 computer and its USB port was too fast. I had to purchase a 2.0 USB HUB.

- Review: My Garmin 296 has the latest version of software installed but wouldn't charge this new battery. I went back to the Garmin site and let it RE-INSTALL the software. Now the battery is charging normally. Make sure to put the new battery in before updating the software. The new battery is 7.2v, the original was 8.4v. So even if your GPS already has the latest software update, you'll have to re-install it.

Q: I have a Garmin 496 GPS original battery is P/N 011-00955-02. I ordered a replacement from another company and they sent me a P/N 011-00955-00. The battery does not fit the 496 even when it stated it should. Will your battery have the same specs as the 011-00955-02. I am returning the other one and do not want to buy from that store. I need the right one before I buy
A: The 011-00955-00 that you received from the other company does show that it is compatible with the GPSMAP 496 according to the information we have directly from Garmin. However, that part number also shows it is obsolete. The original part number 011-00955-02 is also obsolete. This battery pack had a Garmin part number 010-10517-01 but they changed that to 010-10517-02 on May 1, 2013. Many times nothing actually changes about the battery, it is just a different packaging which causes a new part number to be issued. But, the bottom line is that the battery that you have should work. Give us a call at 480-556-0500 or reply via email if you would like more information.

Q: When doing the search of "Garmin gpsmap 396 battery", your location comes up and gives a number 011-00955-02. When I come to your website, you only show 010-10517-01. My Garmin battery is 011-00955-02. Do you have this battery part number?
A: Garmin replaced part number 011-00955-02 with 010-10517-01. This is the only battery that Garmin offers for the GPSMAP 296/396/496. It is the same battery, the only real change was in the blister packaging.

A: Yes, 010-10517-00 was superseded by 010-10517-01. They are the same battery and both will work with the Garmin GPSMAP 296.

Q: Is the lithium ion battery the same for the 495 and the 496?
A: Yes, both the GPSMAP 495 and the GPSMAP 496 use the same battery. This battery will work with either unit (or the GPSMAP 396). It is the exact same as the factory original battery.
