Great customer service on some great books

  • By Steve W. from Portland, OR on Tuesday, April 03, 2018
  • Pros: Thorough books yet easy to read and follow along. Great illustrations!
  • Cons: None
  • Review: My review covers two things, the customer service at MyPilotStore.com and the books themselves.

The staff at MyPilotStore handled a challenge I had with a pre-paid VISA card courteously and swiftly. I ordered my books on a Saturday and received them on Monday. Fantastic!

The books are the best of both worlds: thorough and easy to follow. I highly recommend them to student pilots.

Very Excited

  • By A Customer from Ritzville, WA on Tuesday, December 29, 2020
  • Pros: Grandson was delighted with both books
  • Cons:
  • Review: I called my son and asked if my 13 year old grandson would like these books. My son showed him the pictures of the books. He said, "Heck Yeah! He had his first 2 fights with an instructor last year. I had asked his teacher what books would be good for him. With the COVID lock down he has plenty of time to read and study them.

Essential Books for a Pilot's Library

  • By Martin from Montreal QC Canada on Monday, April 10, 2017
  • Pros: Up to date, comprehensive, informative FAA publication
  • Cons: Not enough pilots read and understand these books.
  • Review: These two up to date books lay the theoretical and practical essentials for all new pilots and serve as an ongoing review for all current ones. A comprehensive range of topics is covered in great detail and supported with clear color illustrations. Additional topics for those upgrading to additional ratings as well as human factors training make these two books indispensable.

Trusted FAA standard with great graphics

  • By David from Clay Center KS USA on Tuesday, February 06, 2024
  • Pros: Great illustrations, written in aviation language yet easy to understand, a comfortable size to hold.
  • Cons: As with all aviation literature it will be updated regularly.
  • Review: These updated versions of the classic standards are thorough, readable, fairly easy to understand, comprehensive, and well illustrated in color. The advantages of a paper copy are that of marking with tabs, putting notes in the margin, highlighting, and bookmarking your progress. They are easy to refer back to if used properly.

HUGE improvement over previous edition!

  • By Michael from Oak Park MI USA on Monday, February 27, 2017
  • Pros: Concise and informative
  • Cons:
  • Review: The previous (2008) edition had an errata list nearly as long as the book. Most were glaringly obvious errors that didn't get caught before printing. It made you wonder if no one had proof read it.

This new edition corrects all of those errors and explains some concepts more thoroughly. Yes, it took 8 years for the government to just simply correct its own error-riddled publication, but they finally did it.

The weather theory section could be a bit more complete since it's important to know. I also would've liked to have a few pages of exercises rather than just the single example problem for each topic (e.g. weight & balance, performance calculations, E6-B, use of the plotter, dead reckoning, etc).

best book written to date

  • By jon Kreilkamp from Valley City ND USA on Friday, January 22, 2010
  • Pros: students find it easy to read and comprehend
  • Cons: no cons I could not be happier
  • Review: I needed a book that was written for a classroom setting. I bought all of the books to review that were available and none came close to being useful for teaching in a classroom setting.I did not like this book at first, but, after reading it and using it, I have found it to be the best textbook for a class ever written. I have been teaching flying in a classroom setting for twenty five years. You should buy the workbook to go with it written by Dan K Dyer--excellent!

  • By Sharon from Pagosa Springs CO USA on Tuesday, November 01, 2011
  • Pros: Layout of technical information

Good general references

  • By Bob from Marana AZ USA on Thursday, December 30, 2010
  • Pros: good coverage
  • Cons: too broad
  • Review: Good reference combination. I'd like it better if a more specific target audience were selected. I don't fly turbines etc. Split out works focused on SEL for instance.

Unbelievably bad textbook

  • By pilot001 from North East PA USA on Thursday, November 15, 2012
  • Pros: Possibly better than no book at all
  • Cons: Inaccurate and misleading
  • Review: 100s (many 100s) of mistakes. Almost all the graphs have horrible errors. Text is frequently misleading. Graphs are artsy-fartsy instead of useful. Use of color is so poorly done that it is childish. Section on Magnus effect is totally out-of-place. Yo FAA...the Magnus effect produces 0% of the lift of a wing because wings don't rotate. That should be obvious. Why are there spelling errors? Can't the FAA afford a word processor?
