Full disclosure - I just got this yesterday and have not flown with it yet. What I HAVE done is set everything up for my local airports and I've driven with it to test GPS navigation, and I've listened to AWOS and radio traffic at local airports. I've also set up Bluetooth to my Bose A20 headset. My initial impression - this is one of those products that you think, "Gee I hope it works this way" then it DOES. I'm most impressed so far. The COMM function, MEMORY, SCAN, GPS, squelch, Bluetooth - all work very well and are intuitive ONCE you read the manual. As others have noted, you need to study the manual. As a tip, look up the YCE46 software manual. It describes the functions of the FTA-850 in more detail.
The thing you need to keep in mind vs on-board modern avionics is that there is no database for this radio. That means you have to manually program Lat / Lon, frequencies, names, etc. But after you've done one, the rest are very quick and you're ready to go. - Was this review helpful to you? Not sure if this radio has been designed for pilots.
A nagging reminder "you assume total responsibility and risk..." has to be confirmed at each power on.
The list of odd handlings is long.
- Freqs cannot be put in the order you need them, but are listed alphabetically,
- no wrap-around in most lists: when you are at the end of a 50+ list you have to step back to go to the first item
- navigation is strange: when you GOTO a point, pilots would expect a course, but just get a red blob on a compass rose which is dancing when you're on ground,
- GPS reception is slow and easily screened
- VOR settings can only be made after VOR reception,
- Keys are too small compared to competitors and poorly lighted.
