Garmin GPSMAP 495 (Americas)
- 3 customer reviews.

Fly with confidence without breaking your budget with GPSMAP 495.
What's Different?
This “mini-MFD” portable includes the advanced features of the
Garmin GPSMAP 496
— minus XM™ compatibility and preloaded maps — at a price you’ll love. It comes
loaded with SafeTaxi® airport diagrams, AOPA’s Airport Directory data, Garmin’s
Smart Airspace™, super-fast update speed, enhanced terrain and aviation
databases and more. Add optional mapping to this versatile handheld for use on
land or water.
The GPSMAP 495 has everything that the
496 has with
three exceptions - it has a much lower cost, no XM weather, and no pre-loaded
City Navigator NT. This portable unit does feature: SafeTaxi, AOPA airport
directory, enhanced terrain warning, 5Hz GPS receiver, Smart Airspace, and
private airports and heliports. And even though the GPSMAP 495 does not come
with the City Navigator NT loaded, you still retain the ability to load road
maps and marine charts to the unit. As for the other exception, the GPSMAP 495
does not have the ability to display any XM WX satellite weather data, so the
unit will not come with a GXM 30A antenna.
View Your Position on Taxiways
Garmin SafeTaxi(TM) data provides detailed taxiway diagrams and position
information for over 650 U.S. airports. Preloaded on the unit, this information
helps you navigate unfamiliar airports with confidence and shows your aircraft's
exact position on the field.
Easily Access AOPA Airport Directory
Look up taxi services, plan an overnight, choose fuel stops and more
with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Airport Directory
included on the GPSMAP 495. This indispensable reference guide puts a wealth of
airport and travel information at your fingertips. It offers detailed
information for over 5,300 U.S. airports along with the names and phone numbers
of thousands of FBOs, plus ground transportation, lodging, restaurants, local
attractions and more.
Receive Altitude-Sensitive Smart Airspace(TM) Alerts
When in the air, Garmin's new Smart Airspace feature makes it easier
than ever to identify what airspace lies ahead. Smart Airspace automatically
highlights airspace close to the pilot's current altitude and de-emphasizes
airspace away from the current altitude, which gives you increased situational
awareness.
Navigate with Enhanced Terrain and Aviation Databases
The GPSMAP 495 features a built-in Jeppesen database with terrain and
obstacle databases. Fly with informed confidence thanks to the enhanced,
higher-resolution terrain database. With over ten times as much data as the
396's terrain database, the 495 provides even more visual reference. It monitors
your current position in relation to surrounding terrain to provide alerts. Even
customize your own minimum clearance levels to receive terrain cautions. With
the unit's Jeppesen(R) database, you can view your flight route displayed over
contour terrain mapping. The addition of private airports and heliports to the
database provides even more navigation and emergency "nearest" options.
Enjoy Faster Update Rate for Maps and Indicators
For added realism and safety, the 495 updates map data and "Panel" page
instruments at 5 Hz, a significantly faster update rate that gives you a
smoother, near "real-time" presentation of your aircraft's analog indicators,
such as the HSI and turn coordinator.

Great aviation GPS receiver in a small package. by Bugsmasher from Wasilla, AK
Pros: Eliminates the need to consult charts and supplements in flight. Makes cockpit management much simplar. Cons: None Review: Great receiver!! I use it primarily for conducting Civil Air Patrol grid and contour searches in unfamiliar terrain. It allows me to quickly flight plan, take off, and navigate to my search area. The terrain page is especially useful while flying low and slow observing the ground. The track function is great for reviewing areas covered during a search. The AOPA Airport Directory and SafeTaxi Airport Diagrams eliminate the need to consult charts and supplements to fly to and land at an unfamiliar airport. There are many more features to this receiver. Too many to describe here. I've also used a Garmin 276C for over 5 years. It's been an excellent unit for automotive, and marine use.

Try it, you won't like it, YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!!! by Casper J from Fayetteville NC USA
Pros: More colors, larger screen faster access. Cons: NONE that I know of. Review: I've owned 3 other GPS and I must say, this is the best. Better viewing, quicker access, does a lot more then my others did. I'm still learning about my 495. People asked me why I didn't purchase the 496. My response was, I didn't want to spend $600.00 a year for weather up dates. I cannot say anything bad about the 495. It has exceded my expectations. OOOOH! You can't beat the taxi information.

Everything it was promised to be! by Ruckus from Clifton Park NY USA
Pros: Fast processor, Safe Taxi, great included accessories Cons: No automotive kit included, Review: I owned a 296 and was planning to buy a 496 even though I had no intention of paying the monthly subscription for the weather. Enter the 495 which filled the gap perfectly. The processor is much faster than my 296 and the added features of the AOPA directory and Safe-Taxi plates are great making this far superior to the already great 296. I think they should have included the Automotive software with the 495 package as they do for the 496 but I was able to get the mapping software and data card on eBay for less than $150 to give my 495 full automotive functionality. Actually better than that which comes with the 496 because I was able to get an aftermarket 512mb data card for a fraction of what Garmin charges for their 128mb card. All in all, if you do not need weather data in your handheld GPS this is an amazing unit at a more than fair price.
