The portable GPSMAP(R) 96, along with the color GPSMAP 96C, integrate
full-featured GPS navigation with a Jeppesen database and comprehensive
towers-and-obstacles database — giving pilots the freedom to go anywhere.
The pilot-friendly GPSMAP 96 has a bright, sunlight-readable, 4-level grayscale
display, making map detail easy to read. With 23 megabytes of memory and a
mini-USB port, users can quickly download and store map data from a variety of
optional MapSource CD-ROMs. Its simple one-thumb keypad control literally puts
the world of GPS capability in the palm of your hand.
Whether on land, sea, or air, the GPSMAP 96 is the smart, versatile way to get
there:
Extensive Jeppesen database includes airports, identifiers and services
Comprehensive U.S. database of obstacles and towers helps alert pilots of
potential hazards
Graphic HSI steering cues with GPS-derived VNAV provide added orientation
Built-in autoroute basemap and optional MapSource marine, topo and city street
mapping downloads let you move seamlessly from plane to car to boat to hiking
boots.
The GPSMAP 96 offers an extensive Jeppesen database along with a U.S. database
of obstacles for the ultimate in moving-map situational awareness. It depicts
Jeppesen(R) airport data overlaid on an electronic map, localizer-like runway
extensions, a GPS-derived horizontal situation indicator (HSI) and information
on nearby airports (including identifier, bearing and distance to each). It also
features a detailed database of nearby obstructions like radio towers and
high-rise buildings. Using symbology, it depicts an obstacle along the flight
route, giving pilots a visual cue and alerting them to potential hazards ahead.
An automatic logbook also calculates your flight time and automatically records
departure and arrival locations. When used with Garmin's free logbook software—FlightBook—this
feature makes light work of maintaining your logbook. Your flight information
will be stored in the unit and can be downloaded to this exclusive Flightbook
software at any time.
Like all of Garmin's new aviation portables, the GPSMAP 96 also provides
advanced navigation capabilities on the road or water. It features a built-in
basemap depicting highways, major roads, lakes, rivers, railroads and state and
national borders. It also provides automatic-route generation, off-route
recalculation, and turn-by-turn directions with audible tones to alert the
driver of upcoming turns.
When coupled with optional MapSource City Select(R) software, GPSMAP 96 enables
the user to locate and route to more than 5 million points of interest,
including hotels, restaurants, service stations, ATMs and more. For pilots who
also like to captain a boat, these units have a Marine mode. Using optional
MapSource BlueChart(R) or Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots(R) software,
users can navigate the high seas or nearby lakes with ease. An added bonus: The
GPSMAP 96 is not only waterproof, but also floats!
The GPSMAP 96: One nav fits all.

Not as versatile as hoped by Scott from Toledo OH USA
Pros: Excellent aviation GPS Cons: Other GPS capabilities limited and expensive. Not Mac friendly. Review: I had hoped for one GPS that I could take from car to plane to trail. While it is an excellent aviation GPS, especially for the price, it is less useful in the car or on the trail. The problem is the extra maps are ridiculously expensive ($100+ for each platform). Also, the memory capacity for these extra maps is a pittance. You can only load a small geographical area at a time. And if you are a Mac user, like myself, forget it. Garmin is light years behind in supporting Mac.

The Price is Right by David from Middleton WI USA
Pros: Small easy to use Review: Need a budget GPS with enough features to have a good VFR experience, this is the unit. As a student now in the solo mode this unit helps me learn. I enjoy the tracking and ability to save a log file, then download to the computer and review my flight. The built in database is great for getting airport information on the "fly".

Great unit by soldier22nd from Milwaukee, WI
Pros: Great variety of features for the price Cons: Limited memory and maps included not detailed for driving Review: Great unit for the price. It's what I expected and more. It covers a wide variety of uses from flying to use in your car. On down side is purchasing expensive maps for car use. It would be nice if the purchase price included those detailed maps. Otherwise, the maps only include major highways. Plus, if you get the software for it because of limited memory you can only really get maps for one state at a time. I love the features for pilot use as well.

Good unit, iffy reception by Private Pilot from Winooski, VT
Pros: Does a lot of things Cons: Loses satellite reception often Review: For the price, this is about as good as it gets. Does tons of stuff and has a large airport database. Unfortunately, it seems to lose the satellite signal very often. When I turn it on on the ground I don't expect it to have a signal, because I know it won't. Even in the air it will sometimes lose the satellites. I will never use this for important navigation, but I do use it for a general idea of distance from airports. Stick with VOR's for now, they're a better bet (and free). It's better to draw the lines on the map and be certain you know where you are.

Does everything I need. by A Customer from Hot Springs Village, AR
Pros: Can do the simplist task (give heading and ground speed) Cons: Had difficulty understanding and using the manuals. Review: A little complicated to learn to operate. Does more than I will ever need.

by Navigator for the PIC from Cottonwood, CA
Pros: We know exactley where we are when flying with this product in the cockpit. And transferring the flight information to the PC Log is a breeze. Cons: Haven't found anything as yet Review: It has so many more features than my husband expected. He couldn't have gotten a better Christmas present.
