Very high quality but not easy to program. by Robert from Greenville SC
Pros: High Quality Cons: Very complex to program, Not intuative. Review: For a simple handheld it very complex to use. They need to come up with a simple basic instruction card."Operation for dummies" If you don't use it every day it's hard to operate. I have had mine for a number of years and have to go back to the manual to program other than changing the freq with the rotating nob. However it's very easy to accidently change the frequency with the rotating nob on top and not realize you changed the freq. The overall quality is very good

Review: The radio has worked as advertised so far. I use it to listen to traffic at two local airports approx 12 miles from home and also use the scanning feature with approach control and the airports. I would buy it again.

Excellent unit - My 2nd Vertex comm by Arlene from Waretown NJ USA
Pros: Small - Long battery life between charges Cons: none Review: The VXA-220 is an excellent choice for a comm. The nav feature while nice to have is not something I really need. It's nice to pick up a IFR clearance/ATIS before engine start. Also the ability to light up the runway at night after a comm failure is a plus.

WELL.. It has good reception! by JJ from Venice FL USA
Pros: Excellent sound and volumn, good receive and transmit Cons: headset jack and not user friendly Review: I found it not very user friendly. Hard to set up and I'm constantly going to manual to see what I did or didn't do. Headset jack is a joke, but has good RX/TX and a very good speaker for it's size. For the money it's an overall good unit, but I probably would not buy another.

Excellent Bang for the Buck by JohnnyB from Floral Park NY USA
Pros: Great all-purpose transceiver that is a great value Cons: It doesn't fly Review: We live 6 miles from JFK and 11 miles from LGA, and we can pick up Approach, Departure, Tower channels with good clarity. Once you understand the programming logic it's fairly easy to set up channels in to memory. Lots of features for the money. A solid value that won't disappoint. Thanks My Pilot Store!

Battery last forever! by Diego from vina del mar Chile
Pros: None Cons: Awesome Review: This transciever is really good it works perfect in any weather condition and any place I can really hear the international airport that's about 100 miles away and transmit everything I can talk to the planes that are like 20 miles away with no problem at all and it really works even wet after being under water and no problem. I recommend this, it's the perfect thing you need when you are a pilot it's the perfect tool. You better buy it, you never know it might save your life in emergency situation.

by Keven from Loganville GA USA
Pros: Size Cons: The channel knob does not lock Review: I'm not real happy with this product and actually have to return it because it will not take a charge. It worked for about two weeks and now the only way it will turn on is if it's pluged in.

by peter from Little Falls NJ USA
Cons: None yet. Review: A 'solid' high-quality' product. Maybe I read the advertisement wrong (3miles limit) but I live 30+miles west/La Guardia and cand not only hear eastbound (overhead, lol) but west (Long Island) and South (NY State) traffic approaching LGA!

A pocket rocket by The Lookout from Ocracoke NC USA
Pros: Small size, long battery life. Review: The VXA-220 is compact, rugged and reliable. There is a reason I have radios spanning the whole spectrum from Yaesu, Standard Horizon and Vertex - they work, period. This little handheld radio is no exception.

Radio works for me by Mark from Gary IN USA
Pros: Small Size.... Solid feel... Lapel Mic Available Cons: Belt Clip Screws worked themselves loose twice. Lockwashers and a drop of Threadloc solved issue Review: I am an ARFF fire fighter and this radio is good for me. Cost was one of the biggest factors since I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg. The fact they submerged it in a bucket of water helped seal the deal. I don't plan on swimming with it, but may be on the ramp in the rain so its nice not worrying about keeping it dry.

by Tim from Lake Wales FL USA
Pros: good for the price Cons: channel button wrong place Review: The only thing that I suggest to change is the volume and channel change buttons. The top turn button should be the volume. If it gets bumped the channel gets changed and you don't know, but if it is volume, just changes sound level.

Vertex Pro VI VXA-220 Transceiver by Bob D from Northride, CA
Review: I am 79 years old; the transceiver was a present of which I had no prior knowledge. Theoretically this device will outlive me. I rate the product a 5, although it has been here only 19 days, not long enough for a thorough, full blown assessment. I don't anticipate any negatives.

great radio by Gary V from Dallas GA USA
Review: This is great for me to listen to ATIS from inside the warm flight school or as I am driving to the airport. It works great within sight of the runway and you can even hear decent from a couple miles away. Don't expect to hear from your house 10 miles away etc. Sometimes I enjoy just listening to the planes talking to the tower. And for being the best price I certainly recommend. There is nothing bad I can say.

Great Handheld! by John the Airport Manager from Paoli IN USA

great for the money by Ethan from Fairhope AL USA
Pros: reliable, great price Cons: qc from the factory Review: I gave this product a 4 out of five for the simple reason that the first one I receved had a portion of the screen that would not display. I called My pilot store and that had one out to me with in the week with return postage. Number two has worked like a charm. I work as a part time flight line attendant so it sees a lot of action. Battery life is great. I have also used it as a back up in an aircraft after the main radio went out, worked great.

Great Deal! by Ellison Air from Anchorage Alaska
Pros: Quality item, Compact, Unbeatable Price W/ Price Match, Fast Shipping. Cons: None Review: Just wanted a basic Com for our Air Taxi office here in Alaska. Sometimes used to contact our plane but mostly to listen to Lake Hood tower and ATIS. Saves having to go out to the plane to check to see if conditions are VFR when weather is marginal,(like this whole summer). This VXA-220 works great for our needs. With the price match got free shipping, could not do better buying used on eBay and got a 3 year warranty. The sale was made on line with no problem and shipped quickly, had it in a few days. Great deal on a good quality radio, I am very pleased with this item and transaction.

Makes bigger brands blush ! by Francis from Quebec QC Canada
Pros: Rugged, easy to program, long-lasting battery life Cons: Didn't find some cons yet. Review: As a helicopter pilot, I bought the VXA-220 to keep some ground-to-air coms, when I'm not airborne. It works incredibly well, I reached out aircrafts many miles away loud and clear. I also like the pre-programmed weather channels to have an outlook of the Wx when I cannot reach a flight service station. I recommend the VXA-220 over the more expensive, bigger brands like Icom !

Not to shabby by Matthew from Tahoe Vista CA USA
Pros: small, easy to use, easy to see, good features, bells and whistles Cons: placement of key pad, instruction book, no PTT switch Review: Small, loaded with good features and will get the job done. I didn't give it five stars because the button pad is on the bottom portion of the face making it difficult to thumb the keys one handed. And it doesn't come with an external PTT switch, uses VOX system (voice activated) instead.

Not for an airplane by longeze driver from NM.
Pros: backlit panel, direct voltage in, easy read panel Cons: receiver flawed Review: I purchased this product as a backup radio for my experimental aircraft. For two weeks, I tried to get it to work properly, even enlisting the support from vertex. Nothing worked and I tried every trick in the book including ferite beads, changing antenna location and regrounding of the antenna.I also tried changing every setting in the menu of the radio.I also have a standard aircraft antenna in my airplane. The radio suffers(and the owner) from hetrodyne effect. In layman terms, it picks up multiples of other frequencies. On final approach one day to a tower controlled airport it picked up a tv station. The next time it picked up a fm radio station and every time thereafter. That along with the terrible hiss makes it dangerous to use at a airport with a tower when clear and concise instructions are necessary for safety. Their more expensive radios have this problem too...Read the reviews carefully. I guess it would be ok if you are just strolling down the flightline on the ground listening to radio chatter but I would not use it as a backup com in the air.

Great Transceiver for the price by Bill from Clarks Summit PA USA
Pros: Size Cons: Could be a little more user friendly Review: I think the Vertex Pro VI VXA-220 is a great transceiver for the price. I fly an experimental aircraft where space is a problem so it works great for me needs.

Don't waste your money. by Tim Devine from Upstate New York
Pros: Nice Radio Cons: Can't use it because of junk headset adapter. Review: Radio works great. Headset adapter is junk. Will not accept David Clark or Sigtronics plugs reliably. Vertex tech support useless. sent you to David Clark or Sigtronics to solve problem. If you want a cheap airshow or just listening toy the VXA-220 is for you.

by John from Tomball TX USA
Review: The unit performs great with good power. The only thing objectionable is the programming process. Even the tech people at Vertex could not do it initally. They had to teach themselves then call me back. Once the programming is done then frequency changes are easy. It has already been invaluable when we lost radios on a flight. The contact distance was around 5 nm which is not good for B & C but it was good for D. Have not tried to contact center but will to check it out.

Great Radio by Rock from alamogordo NM USA
Pros: Excellent transmission and reception quality Cons: No complaints, does all I require of it. Review: Menu selection easy on the ground but changes inflight for single seat pilot take some thought and preparation. This radio serves me well in a low-traffic uncontrolled-airport as my primary communications device. The 220 would be a great back up at busy airports.

Great product, great price ! by john v from bishop GA USA
Pros: small size, good instructions, good battery life Cons: non Review: The Vertex Pro VI VXA-220 is less than the evivalent ICOM unit & the instruction manual is fairly easy to understand. Reception & transmission are good... did a radio check to the tower from inside my house a couple miles from the airport! Can't get over how small, but powerful the unit is.

It was a good decision to buy this product! by Heli Pilot Andi from Liestal in Switzerland
Pros: Easy to handle, excellent sound, sensitive, good price Cons: charging equipp. not for continuous ops., Review: This product is real perfect. It's handsome and easy to handle. The alpha numeric memory system is absolutely great. If the battery charger would be made for continuous operation, that would be great. I use the transceiver very often, especially by ground handling the helicopter. A good gadget for a good price! Unfortunately I didn't ordered the headset with...

Vertiex fine, Service perfect. by Michael from McLean VA USA
Pros: More intuitive, easy to use, improved squelch. Review: The radio is easier to use than it predecessor model from 1998 that I used to own, though it still have many more functions than I need. Improved squelch control, easy access volume control, large/visible digits for frequency. Battery life is excellent. I am very satisfied. Price and shipping speed from mypilotstore was perfect, too. Great radio, great value. by Av8rnfla from Palm Bay, FL
Pros: Good as more expensive models, waterproof. Cons: Headset adapter, hard to screw in all the way Review: This radio is used in my experimental as the ONLY comm unit. It is connected to my external antenna, and transmits and receives well. ATC has no problems with this unit. The only thing I dont like about it is the headset adapter, which you need to screw in ALL THE WAY, or it will not work. I think this radio gives you the best bang for your buck.

Does what it should by A Customer from Huntington, WV
Pros: Durable, good battery life, great reception Cons: None Review: Received this Tx for my birthday in July. Have used it quite a bit as a reciever on the ground and in the air. Have had no problems with noise and the one time I used it airborne (just to see if it worked) my transmissions were picked up just fine. I also like the ability to tune into NOAA weather broadcasts while airborne and to listen to the ATIS before I leave for the airport.

Fixed the hissing audio problem by C-150 Pilot from Ottawa Canada
Pros: Radio works ok. Cons: none Review: There would be a hiss in the audio as described below (even at full squelch - 8). This was fixed by using a smaller external antenna similar in length to the rubber ducky antenna that comes with the radio.

Can't be used as an inflight back up radio. by Cessna 150 pilot. from Ottawa Canada
Pros: Works well on the ground as an air band reciever. Cons: Dosen't work while air born. Review: [editor note: this customer has submitted a modification to this original review above]
This radio works well on the ground as a toy. But I don't think you can use it as a backup com.
Mine produces a hiss in the received audio when air born that makes it sometimes impossible to hear a tower radio transmission. This hissing starts when your about 200ft above the ground on take off and continues until about 200ft from the ground on landing. Turning the squelch up full (8) makes no difference.
Also the unit will not transmit with the power needed for reliable communication from inside a metal aircraft while air born. I understand that its only 5 watt, but if the tower can't receive your transmit from only 8-10 miles away then the radio can't be used.
I hooked the radio up to the aircrafts external com antenna, and this improves transmit. The radio transmit was acceptable and could be received from twenty miles, but the received audio hiss still occurs.
I sent the radio back to Vertex for warranty and it was returned after about 1 month. They said they replaced some parts and the radio tested normal. But its operation is still the same as described above.
The radio receives the weather channel broadcasts very well from inside the aircraft at all times regardless of which antenna is used.

Good Value Excellent Performance by GD from Martinsburg, WV
Pros: Durability, Transmit power, Volume level, programable features, battery life (includes rechargable battery and charger) Cons: Headset adapter Review: After 30+ years of GA and commercial flying this is my first handheld transceiver. Guess I have been lucky - so far only one comm outage albeit on a VFR in the NY Metro area! This is a nice unit. I looked at the Sporty's navcomm but the durability of this unit is what sold me. I know, nobody preflights in the rain right?
Good performance as a backup comm although the headset adapter seems a bit finicky. I can't get it to work with my ptt and Telex headset.
Overall a good unit for the <$200 price. Some places it is offerred for [less]. Shop around [and do a price match].

Great by Jake from California
Pros: Small, compact, light, strong build, quality good Cons: Headset adapter SUCKS and requries push to talk switch Review: Works as advertised. Well built and easy to use. Great for IFR backup, listening to tower and for student solos. Battery life seems pretty good so far. I am very happy with this purchase. Much smaller than the Sporty's one.
