Stick and Rudder
- 3 customer reviews.

Stick and Rudder is the first exact analysis of the art of flying ever attempted. It has been continuously in print for thirty-three years, and has enjoyed steadily increasing sales. Flight instructors have found that the book does indeed explain important phases of the art of flying, in a way the learner can use. It shows precisely what the pilot does when he flies, just how he does it, and why.
First published in 1944. "The book has sold more than 200,000 copies, has never gone out of print, and remains the most influential single volume about handling and airplane. It is written with the gusto of a polemic, whose beginning-to-end theme is that normal, ground-based intuitions are dangerous when carries over to flying a plane"--NY Review of Books

The title and subtitle say it all by Thomas from Palmyra PA USA
Review: Though I have not completed my read, it is one, if not THE best technical books on the art and mechanics of flying I have read. Even the most complex aspects of flight are explained in easily understood terms. I would recommend it to all students of aviation.

Ageless & Relevant by Mark from Nezperce ID USA
Pros: Covers the fundamentals of flight in detail without being overwhelming. Cons: Not recommended enough! Review: Great text! While the author's terms seem "old" to the modern reader, they're not... his intention was to change a few labels and remove our misconceptions. A perceptive reader will note how the author disassociates common misunderstandings such as using the term "elevator" when in fact we do not "elevate" but more correctly, change our angle of attack... which can mean descending as well as "elevating". A new student might need a bit of coaching to understand some of the author's finer points, but any experienced pilot will smile as they read along through the book. Although written decades ago, the author makes points that stand the test of time. I'm grateful it was recommended to me as I worked through various ratings.

A must read for every Pilot by Johnny from Ft. Pierce FL USA
Pros: Great book. Will further expand your knowledge of an airplane Cons: He uses the term ship instead of airplane or aircraft. Review: Stick and Rudder takes the complicated subject on how an airplane flys, into plain english. Topics like stalls, climbs, steep turns, and landings are all explained so you know what's going on. A few pages of reading and you will get that "oh so that's what happening..." Moment!
