Originally designed for the Royal Air Force, the P-51 Mustang became a critical long-range escort fighter for U.S. forces in Europe. Capable of flying at high altitudes, it protected B-17 and B-24 bombers deep into enemy territory.

The "Willit Run" was flown by Fred Le Febre of the 351st Fighter Squadron, 353rd Fighter Group. Based in Raydon, England, Le Febre completed 119 combat missions in this aircraft during two tours of duty.
