- Review: I have owned 5 Aviation Band handheld radios. 3 of which I had no speaker mike, and 2 with the addition of a speaker mike, the Yaesu SSM-20. I have owned a Yaesu FTA550 and currently own a Yaesu FTA450. The speaker mike is great when walking around an airport, or in the air as an emergency backup radio. I have had the need twice in my life of an extra avband handheld. I have had radios or a circuit breaker for navcom radios go south on me and the handheld was my salvation. The speaker/mike still allows one to use a hand to fly and one to communicate. Yaesu makes a good product which I can attest to as a Ham Radio Operator.
