The FAA's Airplane Flying Handbook (FAA-8083-3B and previously called Flight Training Handbook) has been required reading for all pilots for more than 40 years! This book introduces the basic pilot skills and knowledge essential for piloting airplanes. It benefits student pilots just beginning their aviation endeavors, as well as pilots preparing for additional certificates and ratings or who want to improve their flying proficiency, and flight instructors engaged in teaching pilots of all skill levels.

This handbook provides information and guidance on the procedures and maneuvers required for pilot certification. Chapters are dedicated to ground operations, basic flight maneuvers, slow flight, stalls, spins, takeoff and departure climbs, performance and ground reference maneuvers, airport traffic patterns, approaches and landings, night operations, emergency procedures, and transitions to different types of aircraft including complex, multi-engine, tailwheel, turboprop and jets. The latest edition expands and updates the material that is a key reference in FAA testing and Airman Certification Standards (ACS), and it incorporates new areas of safety concerns and technical information such as loss-of-control upset prevention and recovery training, and transitioning to light sport airplanes (LSA).

The Airplane Flying Handbook is the official FAA source for learning to fly and for many of the test questions in the FAA Knowledge Exams for pilots. Complete with chapter summaries and illustrated throughout with detailed, full-color drawings and photographs, it also includes a glossary and index.

Soft cover, indexed, full-color illustrations, 8-3/8" x 10-7/8" format, 352 pages.

Nice Printing

  • By Craig from Westerville OH USA on Tuesday, February 21, 2017
  • Pros: color printing and nice reproduction!
  • Review: My default supplier for almost everything is Amazon, however when I went to order this book there, many reviews of the Pilot Flying Handbook slammed amazon suppliers for poor quality printing and black/white reproduction. I'm glad that I ordered this book from MyPilotStore, because the printing is full color and very nicely done. Definitely buy this book from this source!

Read a good book

  • By Richard from Downers Grove IL USA on Friday, August 05, 2016
  • Pros: easy to understand, good explanations
  • Review: This handbook has proved to be very helpful for the beginning pilot. I'm a visual learner and the pictures that accompany the test are most helpful in understanding the techniques.

Outstanding updated Classic

  • By Patrick from Escondido CA USA on Tuesday, November 06, 2012
  • Pros: Updated classic
  • Review: I am beginning my pilot training in Jan 2013 and purchased this book to help me get started. Very interesting and informative. Would reccomend to all- experienced and beginners like myself.

must have for any pilot

  • By sean from vancouver WA USA on Monday, August 16, 2010

  • Review: Great book, great photos all color.  Must have for any student pilot.

Everything You Need

  • By Mark from Nezperce ID USA on Thursday, June 03, 2010
  • Pros: Thorough without being 1000 pages.
  • Review: The Airplane Flying Handbook is complete, and if I understand correctly, it contains the material that is deemed mandatory for any approved textbook. It's somewhere between ASA's Complete Private Pilot and Jeppesen's Guided Flight Discovery in terms of complexity. For the student that wants the most direct path to the PPL I highly recommend the Airplane Flying Handbook for a text combined with the ASA test prepware for examination readiness.

  • By Larry Lindenberg from Washoe Valley NV USA on Tuesday, March 02, 2010
  • Pros: It make you think. I know that hurts but its good for us.
  • Review: Its all good

Excellent Handbook

  • By Thomas from Berkeley CA USA on Friday, May 15, 2009
  • Pros: Easy to understand and to the point
  • Review: Very insightful and well written book, I had a couple of eureka moments after studying it and then applying the theory in practice. I recommend this to anyone studying to become a pilot or moving up to complex airplane or multiengine ratings. Every flight student should read this along with the Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge from day one.

What a great visual book!!

  • By Andrew from Fairview N.C. on Monday, January 14, 2008
  • Pros: Clear and wonderful illustrations
  • Review: This book is clearly to me one of the best book regarding exactly what the title says "Airplane Flying" whether your flying a single engine to a jet, VFR or IFR this both has it all. Even though this book does not seem to be a beginning flying manual (meaning that it does not deal with the bare basics of flying) it explains everything a experienced or new pilot in training would ask in great detail both in words and in color demonstrations. This is the ultimate supplement to any student or even professional Pilot there is.

  • By A Customer from Alexandria, VA on Thursday, August 02, 2007
  • Pros: Well written and too the point writing. Clearly explains all the basics you need to know about the field.
  • Review: Excellent overview of flying.

Everything You Need

  • By Mark from Nezperce ID USA on Thursday, June 03, 2010

  • Cons: Explanations may be required from instructors and fellow pilots. Not a big "con" at all.
