The Teledyne Alphabeam is the General Aviation industry's first FAA-PMA LED Landing Light. The Alphabeam uses superior patented optical technology to direct the light emitted from the LED's into a field of view that enhances night taxi and landing operations.

The ALPHABEAM™ offers an enhanced field of view compared with the incandescent models it replaces, and greatly improves visibility for night landing and taxi operations.

Is the ALPHABEAM™ FAA approved?
Yes, it is approved under FAA-PMA for most part 23 aircraft. See the list of approved aircraft below.

Can an owner/pilot install the ALPHABEAM™?
Yes, it is a direct replacement to the existing PAR 36 incandescent lamp. Minor maintenance may be performed by the owner/pilot, and does not require a certified mechanic.

What type of documentation is required for installation of the ALPAHBEAM™?
Installation of the ALPHABEAM™ requires only a logbook entry by the pilot/owner.

Does it matter how I hook up the wires or what voltage my airplane is?
No, the input of the ALPHABEAM™ is the same as an incandescent lamp. The ALPHABEAM™ is not polarity sensitive. The wires may be hooked up to either terminal. The ALPHABEAM™ operates on all 14 and 28 volt systems.

What is the projected life of the ALPHABEAM™?
The ALPHABEAM™ has a projected life of greater than 5000 hours of operation.

Can the ALPHABEAM™ overheat during operation?
No, the ALPHABEAM™ has built in thermal protection to reduce the current draw should overheating occur during operation. The ALPHABEAM™ must be installed in the original receptacle of the aircraft. If a rubber gasket was used, it must be discarded in this application to allow heat transfer to the airframe structure. This will guarantee good heat transfer and maximum performance when the aircraft is on the ground in a stationary mode of operation.

How much current does the ALPHABEAM™ draw?
It draws 1.6 AMPS @ 28 VDC as compared to 4.0 AMPS for the incandescent lamp @ 28 VDC and 3.3 AMPS @ 14 VDC as compared to 8 AMPS for the incandescent lamp @ 14 VDC.

What Environmental Testing has the ALPHABEAM™ been subjected to?
The ALPHABEAM™ has been subjected to 27 tests outlined in RTCA DO-160E, the industry standard required environmental tests for Airborne Equipment installed in aircraft. Contact Teledyne for more information on specific tests performed and qualification data.

Is the lens cover of the ALPHABEAM™ impact resistant?
Yes, it is made of a high quality, optical grade of Polycarbonate which reduces the risk of cracking induced by debris picked up from propeller wash.

What is PAR 36?
PAR 36 is the type (Parabolic Aluminized Reflector) and size of the light.

Good Product, Poor Service

Pros: Brighter than stock, great beam pattern for tricycle gear with no dedicated taxi light.
Cons: Teledyne Customer support did not respond to my email regarding approvals. Simple problem. Longer mounting screws needed for install.
Review: Easy installation, great performance so far. My aircraft is not in the PMA list. -A is listed. -C is listed. -B is not listed. Its been 5 weeks and I have not received any explanation or help from Teledyne customer support to my email inquiry. Not a big deal because my A/c parts list only requires a trade no. bulb, but it would be nice if the paperwork was a little cleaner.

My Cherokee has to be modified for this Light to fit.

Cons: Does not fit easy as a replacement bulb... Expensive
Review: This light looks great, and it is the unit I ordered for my PA28-140. BUT the lamp itself has a "thicker" body style and sheet metal work on the lamp holder will have to be performed before I can install it.
This I would have to say it is Not User Friendly.

Did not fit in my Archer II

Cons: Beware of the larger size of this unit
Review: Thicker by about 1/2 inch than the 4509 incandescent and would not fit in my Archer II (PA28-181). Substantial trimming of the cowling would have been required to recess this light and make the the retaining ring fit over it.

A excellent and easy upgrade

Cons: $250-$300 for a light come on guys LOL
Review: I installed these on my 172G, I am not kidding they are over two if not three times brighter than the factory lights, I fly all the time at night now and I can leave the lights on for safety without worrying about them burning out, they hardly use any power which is great too.

Love It!

Review: I bought one a year ago as a replacement landing light. When my Taxi Light burned out this year, I bought another one. They are super bright, last long, no maintenance, easy to install (at least in my 1966 Cessna 172), and hassle free. Highly recommended!

Great lights

Cons: small amount of modification to light retainer rings to fit.
Review: Provides great light output, most of all I like the idea of the 5000 hr service life. Only hope they actually last at least1/2 that long in the "real" world, as it seems a lot of the lifetime claims of these new style lighting systems are exaggerated somewhat.

TRIPLE Check compatibility before you buy

Cons: But not for Mooneys
Review: Through no fault of MyPilotStore, the Manufacturer incorrectly listed this light engine as an acceptable and approved replacement for certain Mooney M20 aircraft. In fact, the physical lamp diameter does not match the PAR48 halogen that it is intended to replace! This is a PAR36 (really measures to PAR35 but who's counting...).
Please be sure to verify dimensions and FAA PMAs before you invest.

Pros: Very bright. Works well, no polarity issues during installation.
Cons: Beam divergence isn't very tight..the farther out the beam shines the more you can see the individual LEDs.
Review: Pretty bright. Kind of expensive compared to some of the others on the market.

Bright Idea!!!

Pros: Low amp draw, bright & can be seen @ all angles daytime @ great distances
Cons: Not focused at distance, it doesn't spotlight the runway
Review: When ATC calls out my plane to another pilot, as soon as I turn on the light they spot me, a nice safety addition. Allthough the 250W bulbs that were in there previously were bright, it was a focused beam and didn't really help anti collision during the day. They also drew a lot on the electrical system & had a limited life span. With this new LED technology the amp meter dosent even flinch, & you can basically run them day & night... The only noticeable difference is that the old school bulbs create a "hot" spot on the runway where the bulb is focused, the LED is a broader, whiter light. The LED will flood the runway & adjacent area with light(nice to see critters hanging around the apron @ night)... One other peace of mind feature is the life span of LED rocks. I do a lot of night flights & standard bulbs always fail when landing at the smaller low lit airports. Its nice knowing that LED lights last for thousands of hours.

Why did I wait so long?

Pros: Wider and brighter beam. Lasts almost forever.
Cons: Still a bit pricey, but still the best bargain of any.
Review: Even my wife noticed I was replacing 4509s way too often, so she got me one of these for Christmas. Installed it as taxi light. Wow, what a difference!
Best bang for the aviation buck to date.
Now, I've started hinting that by Fathers Day, I'll need one for the landing light, too.

Review: Haven't been able to use it at night yet. My home airport doesn't have lights. It looked like the incandescent I took out, but had a slightly fatter profile. I had to relieve the hole slightly to make it go in far enough to put the retaining ring on it. Other than that, installation was easy.

Bright lights are worth the cost

Cons: Expensive, but they should last the life of the plane
Review: I purchased two of these lights, one for taxi and one for landing, and they work great! I chose these for safety so I could be seen by other planes, and they definitely are bright! I fly with them in daylight as an added safety measure.
The only drawback was in identifying whether this bulb would indeed be a replacement for the one in my plane. It took several calls to the vendor, to Cessna, and to my local Cessna authorized repair shop before I finally got the answer. That was the only challenging part of the transaction.

No blanket PMA replacement approval for PAR 36

Pros: More robust than Whelen and mistake proof installation.
Cons: > 2x weight of std bulb and higher price
Review: Product is heavier than the Whelen equivalent but is very robust and mistake proof. The orientation tab is slightly wider than a std PAR 36 glass bulb and the slot in the SS mounting ring had to be filed to fit. Some concern heavier weight could be a problem for some nose cowls. Teledyne does not include the weight in their specs. My aircraft ACA 7GCBC is not on the approved list but is on the list for future approval. Functionality appears very good with higher output and well defined pattern. Have to get a field approval to use. Warning in instructions not to use rubber insulating ring which could limit heat transfer is a concern... many installations will be composite or fiberglass.

Excellent tax light

Pros: Long life, outlast your plane, low power draw, bright
Cons: Cost
Review: While not cheap, this light is very bright, and is supposed to last over 3000 hours. It was a piece of cake to install on my 172M. I use ithe AlphaBeam as a taxi light because it has a wide beam. I installed a Whelan Parametheus as my landing light, since it is a little more directional. Together they are fantastic! The main reason I went LED, aside from never having to replace them again, was the very low current draw. I don't want to put any more stress on the thirty-something year old electrical system of my bird that I have to. These guys draw a fraction of the power of a conventional incandescent bulb.

The spec sheet shows the light intensity in candle power. Others I compare them with are in lumens. What is the relationship?
A: Lumens are a measurement of how much light a device produces, and candlepower is a measurement of concentration of the beam a device produces. These are not the same thing and a good rule of thumb is, "Lumens are brightness, candlepower is beam shape". You can also think of it as Lumens are how to brighten up a room and candlepower is the strength/distance of the beam.

1. Is the Alphabeam brighter than a 4509 light? 2. Can it be made to pulse?
A: Hello Mark, Teledyne's laboratory testing shows the Alphabeam is brighter than a 4509, however some will argue it is how you test.  The 4509 has a very intense hot spot in the center of the beam, and gradually falls off center.  The Alphabeam has more total lumens in the beam, with a more uniform beam.  The best test is to see with your own eyes. To answer your second question, it depends on the pulsing system you are using. If you can let us know what system you are using we can check to see if it will work for you.
