On Top IFR Proficiency Platform v9.5

On Top version 9.5
IFR Proficiency Platform For Instrument Pilots

The On-Top IFR simulator provides pilots with the opportunity to refine decision-making, risk management, and judgment skills before putting them to the test in real flight. Version 9.0 is fully updated to reflect today's Technically Advanced Aircraft (TAA) with the inclusion of a Garmin(TM) G1000-style glass cockpit primary flight display (PFD) in the Cessna 182. A Reality XP Garmin 430 GPS is now available in the Cessna 172, Mooney, Bonanza and Baron aircraft. Also included with On Top V9 is FlightPrep's PlateView program, providing electronic approach plates for U.S. airports. This is a much-requested item and pilots will now have the approach information at their fingertips for their flight simulation sessions.

Features:

  • On Top includes an accurate rendering of ten aircraft — Cessna 172 Skyhawk, Cessna 182 Skylane, Cessna 182R Skylane RG, Piper PA-28-161 Warrior II, Piper PA-28R-201 Arrow IV, Lancair Columbia 300, Mooney MSE, Beech Bonanza V-35, Beech Baron 58 Twin, Beech 1900 Twin Turboprop.
  • Each aircraft has panel options — pilots can choose an HI or HSI, an ADF or RMI, add a moving map or GPS, an attitude indicator or flight director. Fly a conventional 6-pack cockpit or a glass-cockpit featuring a G1000-like PFD.
  • Fly any approach in the world with the worldwide database. View the approach plate with a click of a button using FlightPrep's PlateView program.
  • Simulate truly realistic flights by programming the weather to suit your needs. Set up conditions that replicate the forecast for your next flight; set up the weather to improve, deteriorate, or change randomly to add unpredictable turbulence, ceilings, clouds, and winds.
  • Set instrument and equipment malfunctions to fail predictably or randomly to maximize emergency procedures training.
  • Flight information is recorded and mapped for every flight in overhead and profile views. Save and replay these flights for later evaluation, or re-fly portions of the flight under different conditions.
  • Users can challenge themselves with hard IFR weather, systems malfunctions, and engine failures, while the venture outside the narrow channels of training days to get more out of their instrument ticket.

Real-world fidelity is the key in On Top(TM), an IFR simulator with stunningly accurate flight dynamics, every airport and navaid, photo-realistic graphics, Real-World Weather and the first true-to-life instrument failures ever designed for a PC. On Top gives every pilot the "virtual arena" he or she needs to practice their hard-won skills of scan, procedure and spatial awareness.

Realism
At the heart of On Top you'll find five of the most popular aircraft ever built. There's a Cessna C172, C182 and C182RG, and Piper's Warrior and Arrow. Also included are the Lancair Columbia 300, the Mooney MSE, and Beechcraft's Bonanza V-35, Beechcraft Baron 58, and Beech's 1900D twin-turboprop. Each model utilizes precise flight dynamic algorithms, right down to the deadly assymetrical thrust you'll experience should you lose an engine in the Baron.

Now, you can test your skills against the reality of single-engine IMC in a light twin, or a twin-engine turboprop. This and other aircraft setup parameters are available for all aircraft.

Each aircraft panel is rendered with a next-generation graphics technology that makes every gauge, pointer, tick-mark and knob on your panel as true-to-life as a computer can create. Couple the "Photo-realistic" graphics effect with On Top's precise mimicry of real aircraft instrumentation and you're as immersed in your simulated flights as you are in your actual flights.

There are realistic sound effects, like radio idents, marker beacons, gear and flap extension, and tire sounds. You'll find panoramic out-the-window views, accurate runway lighting and haze layering. You'll even see the rivets across your wings as you look right or left on a circling approach, all with enough realism to make you sweat.

Flexibility
Full instrumentation, like programmable GPS, HSI, RMI, Moving Map and auto pilot is just half of it. In On Top, you decide what instruments you fly with, and you decide where they'll go. Some IFR simulators decide years before you ever get your copy what kind of equipment you'll fly with and where it will go in your panel, but in On Top you can change it every time.

On Top's Real-World Weather is as variable as tomorrow's weather. Define winds aloft and then surface winds, then dial in degree of swing and speed of gusts. Create turbulence, cloud bases and visibility with as much variability as you can handle, so you'll never know if you'll have to fly the missed approach until you get to the bottom of the funnel. And best of all, make your virtual conditions stable, deteriorating, improving or randomly changing, over any given time frame to simulate that all-important decision-making skill at decision height.

Learn From Every Flight
In the real world, getting your procedures down pat with a methodical and practiced scan is just the beginning, and there's always more to learn. Are you ready for a vacuum failure on a bumpy IMC night? IFR simulators of the past have always had some sort of instrument failure capability, but those failed instruments just rolled over and died. The designers of On Top wanted you to recognize an imminent failure, cope with it and survive, so they created Realistic Instrument Failures. As chillingly real as failures in actual flight, each of these is modeled after the way instruments actually behave. A failed vacuum system will slowly tumble your gyro instruments, daring you to follow them into the ground. Program the system or instruments you want to practice failures on, over any time period, or let the computer generate failures at random. Either way, you'll heighten your awareness every time you fly.

When it's time to review and learn from your experiences, On Top's map screen will give you all the information you need to be your own best judge. Whether it was an IFR cross country, an ILS into O'Hare or an NDB approach into a local one-hangar field, every detail of your flight track and profile is there. Replay your flight, save your flight, or back up a flight to any point along the track and shoot it again. If you make a mistake, or simply want to lower the weather parameters, you can re-fly any flight or approach right from the map.

Training

Both ASA and Precision Training Software are dedicated to flight training, and know that flight simulators are no longer about "boring holes through the sky." They're about immersing yourself in the most challenging environment anywhere…IMC.

What's New?
On Top 9.5 features an improved flight control interface, to allow users more control over the program’s response to their flight control (yoke/joystick) inputs. Pitch and roll sensitivity can be fine tuned independently, giving pilots greater control over how the aircraft feels. These adjustments ultimately translate into a more realistic and beneficial simulation experience.

Also new in On Top 9.5 is integrated dual-monitor support. Users with a second monitor and Windows Extended Desktop enabled can take advantage of this feature by starting the program using a new, additional desktop icon labeled “On Top 9.5 IS.” This Instructor’s Station version utilizes the second monitor as an instructor’s station from which an instructor, flying buddy, or safety pilot can monitor the progress of the flight in both plan and profile views, change the weather, and invoke a variety of realistic failures.

Instrument simulation has become an integral part of many conscientious pilots’ training regimens. On Top 9.5 is a valuable tool that can help instrument pilots become better, safer, and more confident through practice, preparation, proficiency, and judgment.

Will not work with 64 Bit system , gps430.
by Paul from Perris CA USA

Pros: none
Cons: lacks complete 64 bit support
Review: Program will not allow the use of the GPS with Windows 7 64 bit system. Otherwise I like the program, I have to load the older version without latest avionics. Windows OS systems running 64 bits should stay away.

Good IFR Trainer for IFR/Nav Skills - Not a play simulator
by John from Draper UT USA

Pros: Good basic IFR/Nav Skills builing
Cons: Could us a MUCH better G1K simulator, more planes
Review: This is a good sim that helped me get my IFR ticket. However, it is not a full sim like Xplane and/or FSX in that there is no terrain awareness or pictures. However, it does the job better than those two products for IFR training. The G1000 simulator is a bit basic as they just put a G430 into the flight plan/menu box so it's not quite the same, but close enough for practice. Special attention to the Joystick/controllers need to be calibrated for true "hands off" trimmed flight, a bit tricky on my PC & controllers.

Good value
by Waldo from Fort Worth TX USA

Pros: Goods: Integrated Garmin 430 and G1000 glass cockpit familiarity, editable field data (freqs, etc), contains scenarios and compatible with lower end computers (16/32 bit and minimal graphics card).
Cons: Others: Not compatible with 64 bit computers, GPS approach data base is at lease several years old (requires separate subscription to update, but also provides printed current approach plates for real world flying), ease of adapting to controls/joysticks (manual is good, tech support is excellent).
Review: Using to prepare for CFII/MEI and Garmin 430 familiarization. Met requirements for cost of software. Improvements (indicated below) would likely make the software less affordable.

Works great!
by Sanford from Smithville TX USA

Pros: all the airports and average typical aircraft most GA pilots are familiar with
Cons: Not "just" like flying
Review: It does more than I imagined....great for IFR refresher and practicing holds and approaches. To say it's just like flying is a bit of a stetch...but the fact that you can practice the systems and technique is what I think is important.

Disappointing
by Mike from Fairport NY USA

Pros: Has an Arrow/Piper dash.
Cons: User interface is very low resolution, does not work very realistic with my Saetek hardware.
Review: I was disappointed that the software did not support the Garmin 430 for the Arrow Piper. I purchased it strictly to emulate IFR conditions with the Piper and a newly purchased 430. Also it did not work very well with my Saetek switches. I expected MS Flight Simulator-like emulation, but it was very redementary. I will be returning the product.

Not out-of-the-box Simple
by Brad from California, USA

Pros: I'll let you know when I get it working... I hope to sim fly the exact approaches that I fly in my instrument training
Cons: Overly complicated setup, poorly written manual, very outdated charts... unless you subsribe to FlightPrep
Review: I have IP Trainer, which is a pretty good product, but I wanted to fly, on a simulator, all the specific (exact) approaches that I fly with my instructor. IP Trainer does not have all the approaches I fly in Northern California. Besides an overly complicated setup and poorly written manual (where's the "easy button" folks? I don't have time for this!). The approach plates are over 3 years old and outdated and inaccurate. The whole point I bought this was to sim fly ACTUAL approaches, not outdated ones. Why couldn't you at least ship the software with a free one time terminal procedures update ticket before steering me to buy a yearly update service from FlightPrep?

Figure it out on your own
by A Customer from CA USA

Pros: Good to practise approaches.
Cons: It's not turn key. It takes some effort to get it working right.
Review: Once you figure out how to make this software work right, it's good. But the manual was written by squirrels. It's not very much help. I had to call tech support for both the yoke and software to work out the bugs. The yoke (as a result of the software) was so sensitive, it was unflyable, even though I calibrated it several ways. Tech support had a fix. Even now, the software sometimes crashes on Vista. However, when it does work, it's great to fly the approaches. I wish you could change the instruments to traditional VORs instead of RMI and HSI.

Good but NOT approved by FAA for logable IFR Training. Ver 8.2 is.
by Doug Floyd from Savannah, GA USA

Pros: Great training tool
Cons: Ver 9.5 is not FAA approved to log time
Review: Buy This Product Without Reservation!!! I purchased this Ver 9.5 for logible training with my ASA PC-ATD Fight Simulator. This version is not approved by FAA for logable IFR Training but version 8.2 is approved. Fortunately, the Ver 9.5 disc had Ver 8.2 on it. Software is a great tool for training and 8.2 time is logable. Read the setup instructions carefully and do not miss a step. Once you understand the system, it is a breeze. ASAs support is top notch / the best / will make you smile. Even provided training at Oshkosh. ASA is A+++. The radio stack simulation is great. Would like to see more out the window for VFR training. Controlling the fight environment (Wx) is great. Instructors side of controls is powerful. Easy to change the configuration depending on your computer set up. User interface and documentation is great. Troubleshooting section of manual is to the point. I like being able to set an approach, execute and will a click be back at the IAF without wasting time. Rewinding to refly my messup is helpful. However, DO NOT buy anything that is Precision Flight Controls (Rancho Cordova, CA); support department is awful. Their first response was deny a problem exists, if you get to talk with them. Had to explain what an AC/DC power supply is. Not that they did not know, I think, they just did not want to help. However, sales department is very nice. I conclude they like to sell but not support. Thank you ASA. "Keep Passing air", Doug.

Helps alot
by Charlie from Greencastle PA USA

Pros: Great database, functions and realism
Cons: Make the manual easier for an "old" man
Review: Helps alot to learn the Garmin 430. The instruction book goes into great detail about all the functions but lacks a simple "getting started" checklist. I still struggle to get the program loaded and going. My computer will also crash sometimes and I have much more than the minimum requirements for hardware.

by Badeye from

Pros: All good easy install
Cons: More aircraft configurations would be nice, especially the older
Review: Great for keeping your skills sharp. Especially your scan and GPS operations.
