The Muse Personal Music Device

The Muse(R), as simple and low cost way of interfacing your favorite entertainment device into your aviation headset. The Muse is a miniature Personal Music Device (PMD) that allows connection of an entertainment source directly to your headset without complicated wiring or permanent installation--no rocket science here. About the size of a 9-Volt battery, The Muse mates with stereo or mono headsets and has no effect on radio transmissions or intercom functions.

Using The Muse is simplicity itself. It has no power switch because its music sensing circuits detect when it is in use; this dramatically improves battery life and makes it impossible to forget to turn it off. The only control on the PMD determines the muting scheme.  The Muse uses PS Engineering's highly rated Soft Mute circuitry. With Soft Mute on, the music is immediately decreased in volume level whenever the aircraft radio or intercom becomes active, and then gradually returns back to full volume.

Just because The Muse is simple doesn't mean it lacks capability. The Muse provides amplified stereo sound to your headsets, which means that even low-powered music inputs will sound clear and crisp, in even the noisiest environments. Its frequency response is greater than virtually all current general aviation headsets available today and is only limited by your entertainment source.

Very good but improveable
by Jan the DO-27 Pilot from Kiel, Germany

Pros: easy to use; good quality
Cons: Battery change not easy, no battery power indicator
Review: It is my second Muse, and both are working well. The principle itself is excellent and it is working very well...nevertheless, small improvement of this device would increase satisfaction even further:
1. A sligthly bigger space for the battery would increase the change of the battery and decrease the risc of damaging the device when closing the Muse.
2. When battery power decreases it is not clear when to change it...a small indicator (red-yellow-green) would help to identify the best moment when to change the battery.
3. Quality of the cable: At my 1st Muse the connection between cable and plug to the music device broke and I repaired it...I hope this will not happen with my second one.
Don`t get me wrong these are all small improvement to be made...I would buy the device again...although more and more headset manufacturers offer an integrated solution for connecting external devices to the headset (e.g. Sennheiser, Becker...)

Don't waist your money
by Josh from Tampa, FL

Pros: Nice to listen to music while in flight
Cons: as stated above
Review: Doesn't always cut out. Not much of a fade in or out. You have to keep the volumn low on music or else it will override the radios.

Pros: Good sound quality when it's running
Cons: Battery saving feature causes music to cut out with background clicks
Review: the Muse Personal Music Device has a lot of good qualities and I have been mostly enjoying it. The biggest problem it has seems to be a design flaw. I called the company complaining that the music would cut out then come back on (not the fade out feature). I had chosen to turn off the feature with the switch, which makes the sound fade during radio traffic. The problem is that it cuts out at the end of each song. When I spoke to a Muse Tech assistance guy, I learned that the battery saving feature on the device turns itself off every time it senses a break in music. so at the end of each song, it thinks the it's not being used anymore and the device turns off until the start of the next song. Then it only turns back on if the song is dynamic (or loud) enough to trigger the battery back on. They told me that for a price, I could send it back in and they could install a regular battery on/off switch to keep that from happening. Guess I'm too cheap so far, just dealing with the clicks and cutting out of the music. I was hoping for something better at that price.
