The Advanced Pilot's Flight Manual is the most thorough book available on airplane performance, loading, and stability. Prepare your students for flight with this updated classic.

The Commercial license preparation manual from Kershner's "The Flight Manuals Series." Updated and edited by his son William C. Kershner.

The Advanced Pilot’s Flight Manual has long been a standard reference for pilots transitioning to advanced models and types and preparing for the Commercial Pilot knowledge and flight tests. This book bridges the gap between theory and practical application, covering the fundamentals of airplane aerodynamics and aircraft performance. Rules of thumb are used throughout as a means of presenting a clearer picture of the recommended performance parameters, and increasing understanding of the variable factors that affect aircraft operations such as altitude and temperature. Knowledge of these thumb rules will enable pilots to maximize performance when operating faster aircraft and at higher altitudes.

Chapters are dedicated to:

  • Airplane performance and stability for pilots
  • Checking out in advanced models and types
  • Emergencies and unusual situations
  • Advanced navigation
  • High-altitude Operations
  • Preparing for the commercial knowledge and practical tests

With over six decades of experience as pilot-incommand in more than 100 types and models of airplanes, Bill Kershner was an FAA/General Aviation Flight Instructor of the Year, named Elder Statesman of Aviation, and inducted into the Flight Instructor Hall of Fame. His son, William C. Kershner, was soloed by his father, and holds Flight Instructor and Airline Transport Pilot certifi cates. He has fl own 22 types of airplanes in his over 15,000+ hours of fl ight time, ranging from Cessna 150s to Boeing 777s.

Covers what we should have learned on our way to Private Pilot

  • By Solo Aviator from Gambrills MD USA on Monday, June 01, 2020
  • Pros: It was useful having the softcopy to be able to quickly find topics for presentation / discussion.
  • Review: As an AGI, I used this book to prepare a class for the Commercial Pilot Exam. The book covers the subject matter very well. Not all that is covered will be tested by the FAA, but is very good for understanding how it all works. The book also does not cover all that will be on the exam. The Flight Manual is heavy on math and trigonometry. Some of the graphics are dated. It could use some color illustrations.
I used it in concert with the FAA Aircraft Flying Handbook and the FAA Weight & Balance Handbook. I also used the ASA Commercial Pilot Test Prep Book to make sure that I didn't miss any topics that will be tested on the exam. This book talks to ~75% of the written.

  • Pros: It was useful having the softcopy to be able to quickly find topics for presentation / discussion.
  • Cons: Restrictive access to the softcopy (Adobe Digital Edition file). Wished it could be a pdf that I could read across platforms.
