I had a Bad Elf external GPS, and it worked great until I lost it. The problem with the Bad Elf is that it is easily dislodged from its receptacle in the iPad when you handle the Ipad. When it falls off, you're unlikely to notice that it's gone, and you might have trouble finding it. I lost mine once, somebody found it in a parking lot and put it in lost-and-found so that I recovered it, but then I lost it again for good. I don't have a habit of losing other stuff - just the Bad Elf.

- Review: Really let down with my purchase of the iPad 4 when I went with the non 4G one and after purchase realized that model was without GPS. After a lot of surfing I found the xgps150 and thought this might be a way of getting my iPad back up to spec ... Well it performs fantastically well right out of the box. Little teething problems getting them to talk to each other but after a reboot and getting the sequence right it has performed flawlessly. Down side is that the charge cable isn't accommodated by the dashboard mat so in a car can be a little challenge to charge and use at the same time without it falling off the dash (we do a lot of 4wding). Also thought it might be nice to hook up with the use of a cord rather than only via Bluetooth but these as only small gripes. Will not work at high altitudes

- Review: It works just fine until we climb above 39,700 feet. When we hit that altitude it stops providing any location information. It still shows that it is connected however. We use it in a Learjet Model 45 and always fly at 40,000 feet and above. So this does not work for us. Contacted the manufacturer who informed us that they were aware of the problem, that it was the chip used in the unit we had and we were instructed to return it and they would ship out one with a chip that would work at higher altitudes. We had to pay shipping to ship it back. A replacement unit arrived about a week later. Same problem. It quits providing location information at exactly 39,700 feet. Their answer was to ship it back again and they would replace it. Every time I send it back it cost us another $20.00.

Here's the problem. While the FlyQ georeferencing now works between islands, I have to keep my eye on it as the plane will stop moving with no warning. Another problem is the heading shown on the FlyQ differs significantly (as much as 90 degrees difference) from the direction the plane is pointing in the georeferenced sectional. It works on the instrument approach procedure.
Here's how I know this. I have a Garmin 296 which has NEVER had any such problems between islands in the last 4 years of using it. The Garmin indicates my georefenced position to cross check the FlyQ and the XGPS. The Garmin and the XGPS sit side by side on the glareshield so it's not a problem with satellite signals. I use it with my 3G -wifi IPad 2. My iipad tracks almost as well the GPS does, even when the 3G is turned off. When my 3G is on and am within range of a Cell tower, I get far better information.

What it means is that many different devices are supported by the GPS, but you can only use one at a time. So if you are in a biz aircraft, with a crew compliment of iPads, and a customer with an iPhone in the back, you have to pick which device will be connected. In our case, one iPad was connected, and everyone else suffered.

I compared it with two other devices (RINO,In touch) and found they both received strong signals. In the airplane it was also very weak even while holding it up against side windows at fl400. In contrast my co-pilot's galaxy phone was receiving up to 6 satellites at a time prompting him to laugh at my purchase.

I bought this unit to use Garmin Pilot on my Nexus 7 Android table. It turns out that the XGPS150A does not work with the latest release "jellybean" of the Android operating system. I called Dual customer service and they said they are aware of the problem and they have their engineers working on it. That was a week ago and still no update.

- Review: After using this device a couple of times, the switch, which allows one to utilize both Apple iOS and Android devices, broke. In my opinion, this unit is poorly constructed and is total waste of money! Due to its limited battery life, you really need an alternate source of power to effectively use this receiver for navigation.
