Pros: Practical flying guide that will improve any pilots technique
Cons: Need to update the illustrations graphics and update chapter 4
Review:
Bought this book when it first was first published in 1985 as a new CFI. Captain Schiff is a well respected author who supports his statements with fact and reason. I consider this book a must read for all my student pilots, and give them a copy as part of their study books. I have also given dozens to my pilot friends, especially CFI and ATP candidates. Chapter 5, The World of IFR is a invaluable resource for teaching (and flying)this subject. I teach in simulators which is mostly emergency operations, and Chapter 6, Emergency Tactics is a must read for all pilots who want to be successful in handling emergencies. The 180° emergency return is a hot topic once again. However, Captain Schiff already covered this in 1985 with well reasoned discussion that no other author since has been able to improve upon. After 12,000 hours of teaching hundreds of pilots from Private to ATP, Proficient Pilot is the best book about being a pilot I can recommend.
