Review: I have alway used Bose headsets but decided to try the AKG AV1000 the comfort is great and the features are very well thought out. Even the carrying bad is very cool. They did everything right on the design of this headset BUT.......... blew it on the noise cancellation and quality of sound. Even the music doesn't sound good. This surprises me coming from a company that is known for sound and microphones. Would not recommend this headset for any piston aircraft would be fine for turbines. I have a 2015 Cirrus that is quieter than most twins and was still not executable. To bad I'll what to see if they improve.

Review: I love my new headset. It has the lightweightness of the Bose A20 with the Bluetooth features of the Zulu lightspeed. The only downfall is that if you use the music play feature with either the audio jack or Bluetooth the batteries die pretty quickly. Best to invest in some rechargeable.

really good quality
by Ryan from Arlington Heights IL USA

Review: It's a very comfortable and light headset. The sound and mic quality is easily on par with Bose A20.

You get what you pay for
by Bradley from Honolulu HI USA

Cons: Need to remove sun glassed for a good seal around the ears.
Review: This was my first ANR headset. Provides clear communication all around. Gone are the days of saying "say again".The built in light comes in handy for looking at maps when you dont want to reach for a light.

Tested all ANR headsets, and I like this one most
by A Customer from Davis, CA

Pros: Very Comfortable, light, sturdy
Cons: None yet
Review: I've tried all four of the big ANR headsets recently: the Bose A20, Sennheiser S1 Digital, Lightspeed PFX, and this AKG. I'll list my thoughts on each one.

Sennheiser: Good ANR, very comfortable. It had a short mic boom which bothered me, so I looked for something different.

PFX: Also very comfortable with good ANR. Like the Sennheiser, the PFX also had a short mic boom. Another feature I didn't like was the control unit being so bulky. Of course you'll clip it somewhere when flying but it wasn't my favorite setup, plus it seems more fragile than the rest.

Bose A20: Without a doubt the best noise cancelling headset of all the "big four," and great clarity. I think a large part of that is the headset having the strongest "clamping" force. If I was doing mostly short flights (an hour or so or less) I would buy this headset in a heartbeat. When I tried this one I loved it for the first hour, then I hated it because the constant pressure on my ears pushing against my skull grew painful, and made me sweat. Bose improved on this squeezing problem from their older ANR headset but it still exists in the new one for me.

AKG: I was very timid in buying this headset because it is the company's first aviation product and deficiencies are expected. After wearing it a few times I have never felt any discomfort. It's light and I hardly notice it's on my head when I fly (this is huge when flying long XC legs). As far as ANR it is close to, but not as good as the Bose A20.

I decided on this headset because it is hands down the most comfortable that I've worn. There was talk in an earlier review about a "hiss" in this headset. I found that there's a little hiss in all the ANR headsets, and ever so slightly more in this one than the Bose. Having a little less noise cancelling in this headset allows me to hear the engine better in the pattern, which I like, as I am a fairly new pilot with under 200 hours. I didn't tryout the Bluetooth feature in any of the headsets because I don't think it's important.

In conclusion the bottom line is that it's all personal preference, and comfort is what I prefer the most, and that's why I chose the AKG.

Finally a Headset that Fits my Head
by Bill Stall from Jacksonville, Fl

Pros: Comfort, Bluetooth, Light, Plugs
Cons: Expensive
Review: For someone that has tried every headset I have finally found the one that does not cause me to get a headache 2 hours into flight. The comfort around the ears and on top of the head is 100%. The map lights are a cool feature, only have used them once so far but was very convenient. I am also enjoying the bluetooth in for the music and phone. You can adjust the music to the perfect level in the background. The ANR seems very good in the Piper I fly. I have not A/B tested it to my Bose (they have a broken ear muff that was causing my head to turn black) but from what I can tell it seems about the same. The other feature I liked is the headset comes with both dual GA plus and the 6 pin dash powered plug. I have dual GA now but plan to have the other plug installed at annual. Lastly, the bag they come in is quite nice with a place for my iPad.

Better, and not
by John A White from Chicago area

Pros: Earcup comfort, better control module placement on cord, laplight
Cons: Very slightly less effective ANR
Review: Flying with the AV100 and the Bose A20, comparison frustrated me. AV100 larger earcups are more comfortable for me, yet my spouse (who has smaller head) reported she couldn't find comfortable headband adjustment (and likes comfort of the Bose). Harmon's passive NR (tested in busy restaurant noise) very slightly less effective, and when wearing in a very quiet environment with ANR on, VERY slight hiss (circuit noise) can be heard. Bose is DEAD quiet in same ANR test. My weight measure showed the Harmon to be about 0.8oz heavier (not including cord).
The Harmon has more convenient(longer) cord length, the LED lap light is clever and effective. On balance, the Bose reveals a slight performance edge in NR in the airplane. I really like the Harmon otherwise, and wish that weren't so.
