The Yaesu FTA-550AA is a VHF Airband Transceiver packed with features, yet very affordable. Boasting an oversized full dot matrix LCD display, the FTA-550AA Airband Transceiver provides full communication on the Aircraft communications Band ("COM" band: 118 ~ 136.975 MHz) and additionally provides VOR and ILS navigation features on the "NAV" band (108 ~ 117.975 MHz). The Yaesu FTA-550AA includes NOAA weather band monitoring and the capability of programming up to 200 memory channels with a quick and easy channel recall feature. The brand new, easy to operate, menu system is icon driven making it simple to navigate through all of the powerful features this transceiver has to offer. Additionally the Yaesu FTA-550AA can easily be reprogrammed in minutes using the optional PC Programming software and the supplied USB programming cable.

Features of the Yaesu FTA-550AA Airband Transceiver:

  • 5 Watts TX Output Power (Airband: AM 5W P.E.P. type, 1.5W carrier)
  • Huge 1.7" x 1.7" Full Dot Matrix display (160 x 160 Dots)
  • ILS Navigation Display (Localizer)
  • VOR Navigation Display
  • NOAA Weather Channel and Weather Alert (USA only)
  • 200 Memory Channels with 15 alphanumeric characters
  • Back-lit Keypad and display with dimmer
  • Water Protection -IPX5 Rating
  • Loud Audio (800 mW speaker)
  • 25 kHz and 8.33 kHz channel spacing
  • Alkaline Battery Tray (AA x 6)
  • Headset Adapter included
  • Cigarette Lighter Adapter included

Yaesu FTA-550AA versus Yaesu FTA-550L:   The FTA-550A is the Alkaline Battery version.  The transceiver is powered by standard AA alkaline batteries (6).  The Yaesu FTA-550L includes everything found on the FTA-550AA PLUS a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery or AC charger.

Easy to operate!  The FTA-550AA comes configured with an easy to operate icon driven menu system. The displays and menu settings are logically configured for a more intuitive user interface.

Great display!  The FTA-550AA features a huge 1.7" x 1.7" full dot matrix LCD display with full backlight and dimmer. The high resolution display makes it easier to view all the great features the FTA-550AA has to offer.

Navigation! When the FTA-550AA receives a VOR signal, the display will automatically switch to the NAV band screen which shows a CDI based on the received signal.

Well accessorized!  Includes DC Cigarette Lighter Adapter, headset adapter cable, alkaline battery case, belt clip, and USB programming cable.

The Yaesu FTA-550AA features a IPX5 waterproof design protects it against rain and water jets. Great for flight line personnel, airshow use, and anyone using a transceiver outdoors where it may rain. In addition it's 800 mw audio amplifier makes the FTA-550AA louder than any other handheld transceiver available today (for example, it's about 35% louder than the Icom IC-A23). The Yaesu FTA-550AA is powered by six standard AA alkaline batteries.

200 memory channels can be easily programmed into the FTA-550AA allowing quick easy access to frequently used channels on the aviation band.  Each "book memory" channel can be programmed into the unit using the optional PC programming software and cable. All memory channels can be labeled with either a channel number assignment, operating frequency display, or an alpha-numeric channel name display.

Breaking the squelch threshold has never been easier. Press the Squelch button for two seconds and the FTA-550AA's squelch remains opened for monitoring weak and distant signals. Pressing Squelch again restores squelch settings. This is TRUE one handed operation. No need to fumble with tightly spaced concentric knobs!

Receiver Battery Saver feature is designed to maximize the life of the transceiver's battery. When the FTA-550AA is in the standby mode the battery saver de-energizes the transceivers circuitry, waking up at user selected intervals to sample for radio activity. If no activity is detected the FTA-550AA goes back into its sleep mode. Current consumption is minimized, thereby maximizing battery life. This feature is only found on Yaesu's air band transceivers!

The FTA-550AA can receive all 10 NOAA weather broadcast frequencies. The Automatic Active Weather Channel Locator automatically scans for active NOAA weather stations in your area when the Weather band is selected.

Your Yaesu FTA-550AA includes:

  • Cigarette Lighter Adapter
  • BNC Helical Antenna

I would buy this product again, but we could not control the squelch, so it became unusable.
by Richard from New Hampton IA USA

Pros: It is a nice package for the price
Cons: Can not control the squelch.
Review: It is a nice unit overall, it did transmit and receive, but we could not control the squelch, so we were not able to use it. I will have to send it for warranty work.

Review: Best bang for the buck radio. I bring this with me all the time and it fits nicely on my Brightline B4 Pilot Bag. I place it inside the "Alpha" pocket and it fits nice and snug. And since I cannot justify paying an extra $100 for the rechargeable version, I bought this and I use rechargeable eneloop AA-size batteries against manufacturer advice (the manual says to use only alkaline batteries). Aside from the radio not being able to correctly tell the amount of batteries left due to this, it's been working flawlessly!

The downside I see to this is that if not taken care of properly, the plastic LCD display is easily scratched because of its size. Other than that, I have no complains whatsoever.

Excellent product
by ben from Pittsburgh PA USA

Pros: Well made, easy of use, range, sound quality
Cons: None
Review: I love this model. The first time i turned it on, i knew it was worth the price. It is very well made and very easy to use. I was expecting it to be more complicated. I like how when on the NAV setting, it automatically tunes to the closest navaid. A must have for any instrument pilot.

Great Radio
by Dave from North West Pennsylvania

Good but could be better
by Paul from Cave Creek AZ USA

Pros: Powerful frequency storage functions, compact, easy to read and hear.
Review: Generally happy with it however there's room for improvement. Biggest issue: Antenna does not twist lock onto the radio. Assuming this is a feature and not a manufacturing defect then I understand why... you can't break it off. But you don't want it falling off and disappearing behind your seat in an emergency, so I think it's more important for it to be fastened on than to eliminate the risk of breakage.

Second, the VOR is cool but range appears to be limited so if you are looking for backup NAV just get a GPS NAV app for your phone.

Last, battery life is limited with alkalines and the battery indicator can only be trusted during transmission when the batteries are under load.

Operates as advertised - Great
by Gregor from Port Orchard WA USA

Pros: Works as advertised & easy to program
Cons: You need a screwdriver to remove the cover plate in order to plug in a headset.
Review: The transceiver worked right out of the box. Programming was very easy and the reception of weak signals is great. No complaints. I would strongly recommend the purchase of this Yaesu Pro-X. FYI: I ordered it on a Friday Morning via standard shipping and got it on Monday afternoon here in the Seattle area. Great service!

Great product great price!

Review: This radio is fantastic and user friendly. Display is clear and I can hear traffic even in my office at work. The only thing I dont like is the securing of the antenna. It seems that it could hold a bit better.

Excellent transceiver
by Mick O'Connnor from Davis CA USA

Pros: Large easy read screen, easy to programme and use, features
Cons: squelch control not as easy as an Icom, would like and LED to confirm transmit
Review: I bought this transceiver to replace my old Icom A3 for use in my ultralight. I modified the supplied GA headset adaptor lead to allow connection to the Icom interface cable and it interfaces perfectly. Very easy to programme memories, large bright screen (love the ability to tag freqs with full name). Loads of useful features

by Dan from Pequot Lakes, MN
Review: Good radio overall. Gave 4 stars because the description says it has ILS but in reality it has only a LOC no Glideslope. Easy to use and hooks up to my external antenna for okay range. Good backup and 2nd radio for weather and emergency use.

Easy to use with a little help
by Sal from Rohnert Park CA USA

Pros: Nice size; good sound; easy to use
Cons: Direction a little unclear and not in the correct order.
Review: The directions are a little difficult to understand at first, but after using it at the airport, it becomes clear. You can see all your frequencies at once and just scroll down to the one you want. When you scroll down to a VOR frequency, the OBS pops up automatically. I had to call tech help to figure out how to adjust the squelch. You just tap the button once to see the squelch bar, then you can adjust it. I was holding the button down too long. After that, no other problems. I recommend this product.

Works as it should. Owners manual explains it well.
by DM from Pequot Lakes MN USA

Pros: Great price
Review: Works well. Takes a couple steps to do some things, but it is explained well and it is quite intuitive to figure things out. Just go through the manual once and most stuff works well. Can be plugged into the intercom music jack with the same standard cord for listening on the headset.

Can't beat it for the money
by A Customer from Lincoln NE USA

Pros: Price, plenty of volume, Big Screen, Ease of use.
Cons: Haven't found any
Review: Just what I expected and more for a radio that cost $200. I have the headphone adapter pugged in it all the time so I can use it in an emergency if needed. I have tested it when I was on the ramp to contact the FBO for fuel. No issues. I used the VOR function the last time I flew to a different airport. Seems to work as well as the VOR equipped in the plane. I have been looking at air band radios for a while. I received this for a gift and haven't looked at another radio since.

Pros: Easy to use and set up.
Cons: None at this time.
Review: We needed to replace our radio, because aircraft couldn't hear us even in line of sight. This radio cured that problem in spades. The advertised range is pretty accurate from ground to air.
