Garmin GDL 39 3D ADS-B Receiver

- 4 customer reviews.

Garmin GDL 39 3D ADS-B Receiver

Start receiving ADS-B traffic, subscription-free weather on your Garmin aviation portable or mobile device with the Garmin GDL 39 3D ADS-B receiver. When using the Garmin Pilot app on your mobile device, the GDL 39 3D can provide highly accurate WAAS GPS data as well.

  • Receives subscription-free weather
  • Advanced ADS-B "dual-link" traffic with TargetTrend and TerminalTraffic technology
  • GDL 39 3D adds attitude and SVX in Garmin Pilot for Apple mobile devices, aera 660 or 796/795
  • Wireless Bluetooth connectivity with the Garmin Pilot and ForeFlight Mobile apps, aera 660 or 796/795
  • Built-in WAAS GPS receiver

Add Attitude
The Garmin GDL 39 3D is the exact same as the Garmin GDL 39 but also adds a built-in Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) (attitude sensor) to the device for attitude backup during your flights. Using split-screen mode in the Garmin Pilot app (for Android and iOS) or Foreflight mobile app, the Garmin GDL 39 3D allows you to simultaneously view your current attitude (pitch and roll) alongside ADS-B weather, datalink traffic or other flight information.

Access Comprehensive Aviation Weather
The GDL 39 3D features ADS-B "In" datalink technology that allows it to receive subscription-free Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) weather information over the FAA’s 978 MHz Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) uplink. Easily access graphical NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs, winds and temperatures aloft, PIREPs, NOTAMs and more right on your compatible Garmin aviation portable or through the Garmin Pilot app on your iPad or Android device¹.

Spot Potential Traffic Threats
The GDL 39 3D can receive ADS-B position reports directly from other aircrafts in your vicinity. Because the FAA permits ADS-B broadcasts on 2 frequencies (978 UAT and 1090 ES), the GDL 39 contains both receivers so you can see a comprehensive view of all ADS-B "Out" equipped targets. The compatible display² will alert you by announcing traffic targets both audibly and visually. Spoken audio alerts announce "Traffic, Traffic" to get you looking right away.

ADS-B "In" technology also allows the GDL 39 to receive Traffic Information Service-Broadcast (TIS-B) information. TIS-B allows you to view the same dynamic traffic picture that ATC ground controllers are seeing when you're either participating with an ADS-B "Out" solution or within a certain range of another ADS-B "Out" participating aircraft when within a service area. Garmin correlation technology automatically displays the highest-integrity traffic data from multiple sources, preventing ghost or duplicate targets.

Take Advantage of Advanced Display Capabilities
With the Garmin Pilot app on your mobile device, you can receive advanced traffic display features like TargetTrend™ relative motion tracking that provides a faster, more intuitive way of judging target trajectories and closure rates in relation to your aircraft's position.

Get More Accurate GPS
The Garmin GDL 39 3D can provide highly accurate WAAS GPS location information to your mobile device – like an iPad – using Bluetooth technology. This provides your device with the precision you’d expect from Garmin’s aviation-grade navigation devices, updating at a rate of up to 5 times per second depending on the capability of the device used.

Go Wireless
With built-in Bluetooth capability, GDL 39 can wirelessly send the data it collects to devices running the Garmin Pilot or ForeFlight Mobile apps, as well as the aera 795/796 and aera 660. GDL 39 collects and stores all available traffic and weather data in your vicinity so it can be available as soon as you turn on your display. It's capable of simultaneously providing wireless data to 2 devices while hardwired to a third. As opposed to using a Wi-Fi link, Bluetooth® lets you stay connected while on the ground so you can continually receive the latest weather reports as long as you have a data connection — no manual switching of networks required.

Just set it up once and it will automatically remember and pair with your mobile device the next time you hop in the cockpit. If wireless connectivity is not an option with your device, a wiring harness can be included with your GDL 39. The device can go up to 5 hours between charges with an optional battery, and a cigarette lighter adapter comes included for onboard power. As technologies continue to develop, software updates will be available through your aviation portable via Garmin Pilot and a separate utility app on your mobile device using the Bluetooth connection.

¹Not all FIS-B products may be available across all devices. Check your Pilot's Guide for specifics about which products are available on your device.
²Both the audible traffic alerting feature and TargetTrend™ require compatible displays. Please check the Pilot’s Guide for specific capabilities available on your display.
Note: The GDL 39 is a non-certified receive-only product. It does not provide ADS-B "Out" capability to satisfy FAA mandate requirements.

Garmin Pilot/ GDL 39 3D. The best Avation app ever!!!!!!!!!!1
by Joby from Fredericksburg TX USA

Pros: Amazing Price for what you get
Cons: A way to finly adjust pitch angle on the attitude indicator would be nice
Review: Know where you are and where you're going, (moving map and CDI). Know what is in your way (Terrain, obstacles, TFR's, NOTAMs, clouds, rain and thunder storms). Know some of the people trying to fly into you (Traffic trending). This is a wealth of situational awareness that just a few years ago would cost tens of thousands of dollars. The motor glider I rent has minimal instrumentation. With the GDL 39 3D sending data to Garmin pilot on my I pad, and I phone each suction cup mounted to the dash board in front of me I feel like I'm flying a Cirrus! (Well a slow moving Cirrus but you get the idea)

nice and solid performance
by Christophe - C77R from NC

Pros: fully integrated with MyPilot app.
Cons: would benefit from an adjustable screw to adjust horizontal level
Review: I have been waiting for the 3D release for a while.. I am flying IFR with the Garmin MyPilot app (using Foreflight for planning only) and had the opportunity to check the Stratus 1 and 2 with Foreflight but didn't want to change my habits. So when Garmin released the 3D version with SV, I jumped on the opportunity. Not disappointed, really nice (backup) solution for IFR,truly enhancing the flight experience, great for VFR too:
- ADS-B weather, in synch with on board XM Weather
- Traffic (although limited until the plane is outfit with ADS-B out, not a surprise, fully disclosed by Garmin)
- Attitude really nice (make sure you level the unit properly, harder on a Cardinal due to non level attitude on the ground)
- SV is really a great enhancement (seeing the runway pictured on the ipad while still being in the clouds is a huge spatial awareness improvement)

Only feedback for improvement: since the Cardinal on the ground doesn't have the same attitude than flying, you need to adjust the receiver position in flying to actually show level (otherwise if the unit boots on the ground, you will show a neg 10 deg pitch while flying level). An adjustable screw would make the fine tuning easier. I had to glue a little pad, no big deal.
