Yaesu FTA-720 NAV-COM Aviation Transceiver

Compact Airband Transceiver with Navigation and Multi-Band receiver

The Yaesu FTA-720 - an update to the popular Vertex Standard VXA-710 Spirit - has it all! A compact case size with a functional layout gives it style, surrounded by a die-cast magnesium chassis with rubberized armour for durability, and a multiband receiver covering the Aviation band, NOAA weather, BRS, and AM/FM bands makes it the smart choice for any aviation enthusiast.

In additional to full voice transmit and receive on the Aviation Band, the FTA-720 provides VOR navigation with course indicator and a course deviation needle giving TO and FROM bearing information.

The multiple capabilities of the FTA-720 Spirit yield unmatched operating and monitoring opportunities for the owner on the go! And you get the additional monitoring excitement afforded by receiver coverage of the Business Radio Service (BRS) band, a Vertex exclusive!

160 Memory Channels (Incl. Pre-programmed "Book" Memories)
70 memory channels can be easily programmed into the FTA-720 allowing quick easy access to frequently used channels on the aviation band. Additionally, 90 "book memory" channels can be programmed into the unit using the optional PC programming software and cable. All memory channels can be labeled with either a channel number assignment, operating frequency display, or an alpha-numeric channel name display.

Submersible (JIS-7)
The FTA-720's case, speaker enclosure, and controls are carefully sealed against water ingress, allowing the transceiver to be specified for protection against water ingress per IPX7 specifications (immersion to 3 feet/1 m for 30 minutes). So you need not fear using your FTA-720 during severe weather.

Rugged Magnesium Die-Cast Construction
The unmatched ruggedness of the FTA-720 takes away the worry of accidentally dropping your radio, thanks to the light weight die-cast magnesium chassis and rubber armor on the bottom corners.

Supplied Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery
The FTA-720 is supplied with a super-long-life 7.4 V, 1300 mAh Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (FNB-80LI), providing many hours of operation and reliable charging without the "memory" effects that can plague other battery types.

Receive Battery Saver
This feature helps maximize battery life by deenergizing the receiver section during periods of no activity, waking the receiver up at user-selected intervals to sample for channel activity. If no activity is detected, the Spirit goes back into its "sleep" mode. Current consumption is significantly reduced, thereby maximizing battery life. This feature is only found on Vertex Standard Airband Transceivers.

Multi-Color Strobe LED Status Indicator
Among the more innovative features introduced in the FTA-720 is the multi-color Strobe LED, which provides indication of a number of transceiver status items using different colors. Different colors may be selected for each of the above conditions, and a total of 256 color shades are available, for customizing the colors just the way you like them.

Dot Matrix Display
No Airband hand-held transceiver has a display that even compares to the FTA-720's 132 x 64 dot matrix display. Providing clear, easy-to-read indication of frequency and Navigation data alike, the VXA-710's display includes an unparalleled array of graphical and pictorial tools that make operation a breeze.

The Spirit can receive all 10 NOAA weather broadcast frequencies. The Automatic Active Weather Channel Locator (a Vertex Standard exclusive) automatically scans for active NOAA weather stations in your area when WX band is selected.

NOAA "Severe Weather" Alert (U.S.A. Only)
The FTA-720 includes a special feature that sounds an alarm when the special "Severe Weather" alert tone is received from a Weather Broadcast station. This warns you of potentially life-threatening flying conditions.

One Touch Emergency Frequency Access
For lightning-fast access to the 121.5 MHz Emergency Frequency, a dedicated key on the front panel assures you of no delays in summoning help in an emergency.

Backlit Keypad and Display with Dimmer
The front panel's keypad and LCD are illuminated in Yaesu's renowned Omni-Glow amber hue, for excellent visibility and minimal impact on your night vision. The Omni-Glow display/key illumination may be configured in a number of battery-saving ways. Both Brightness and Contrast are adjustable. You can set the illumination to appear continuously, or only for a few seconds after a key is pressed. You can even turn the "Busy" Strobe off, for additional battery conservation.

Comes supplied with:

  • 1300 MAH Li-Ion Battery
  • Battery Charger
  • Headset adapter
  • BNC Antenna
  • Belt Clip

Good things come in small packages
by Dave from Springfield OH USA

Pros: Clarity, size, ease of dialing in frequencies, and ruggedness
Cons: Maybe a little cumbersome to pre program the memories
Review: I ordered and used this transceiver for communications between myself and the test pilot of a newly completed Van's RV-12. It turned out to be a great little radio. Chrystal clear both on Rx and Tx. It reaches out very well and now that the testing is done I will have it with me at all times when I fly as a back-up radio and VOR. I kn ow I can trust it to do the job should I ever have a radio failure. Very nice, small package and built to take a beating.

Just buy it!
by Barry from Witbank Mpumalanga South Africa

Pros: Don't have to keep referring to the instruction manual
Cons: Not mini headphone compatible
Review: Excellent product, especially the compact size.Being a student pilot, the only thing extra that i would have liked, is to be able to plug in a set of mini headphones so that i can listen to the traffic in my local flying area and get used to the comms talk.

Good Radio
by Steven from Homestead FL USA

Pros: Lots of features. Once programmed, easy to use stored frequencies.
Cons: None that I can think of
Review: It took 2 tries to get a good one. The first one had some type of programming problem. At first I was bothered that I had to speak with Yaesu directly to tell me what I already knew, the radio didn't work. However, after a brief conversation I called mypilotstore back and they quickly shipped me another, complete with return info for the bad one. I am one of those that reads the manual from cover to cover with the product next to me. It works great. I got my most common frequencies programmed in. I haven't had the need to use most of the advanced features yet but I expect to. The reception is good. I can listen to my local airport from the ground, about 5 miles away and can hear some of the next closest one, 20 miles away. I use it every week to listen to the ATIS before I start up my rental, (and start the meter running). I also used it for a couple weeks just to listen in and familiarize myself with the lingo. It also helped me self evaluate my radio performance by hearing others. Battery lasts for a couple days. After charging it up fully, I left the radio on to see how long it would last. It lasted longer than I expected. Definitely worth the price for the peace of mind.
