GDL 39 external battery

  • Pros:
  • Review: Works well

Expensive for what it is, jury still out. Works great though.

  • By Adam from Sherman, TX on Wednesday, November 29, 2017
  • Pros: nice way to eliminate a cable, more options for placement of the device when you don't have to worry about a cable
  • Review: Well, it is certainly nice to have and it does eliminate one more dangling cable. I've only had the chance to use it once, and the charge only lasted perhaps 2.5 hours. It would be nice if there were some sort of alert it could send to Garmin Pilot that the battery is getting low so you can plug it in. It takes a long time to charge, so I am not sure I let it go long enough the first time so I will give it the benefit of the doubt and charge it longer next time. Still, there aren't really any other options unless you want to hardwire the GDL39 in, so there you are.

Should have bought it long time ago

  • By Chris from Scottsdale AZ USA on Monday, April 11, 2016
  • Pros: Increases reliability of GDL 39
  • Review: Greatly increased reliability for Garmin GDL 39 3D that was experiencing ship power issues. Also nice to power it up when not in the plane.

Worth the extra money

  • By Zachary from Bunker Hill IL USA on Wednesday, July 29, 2015
  • Pros: Very useful to prevent failure in flight from either electrical system failure or coming unplugged at the wrong time
  • Review:

Needs fixing

  • By Paul from Southern Pines NC USA on Tuesday, October 28, 2014
  • Pros: none
  • Review: I purchased the product knowing the battery was limited, but thought that it could go 4.5 hours out of the box. With todays technology we cannot do any better? When battery gets to about 20% it puts a warning box up telling you that the battery is low, but every 1 to 2% change it keeps flashing up. This is happening right as you are getting close to your destination.

Simple and Safe

  • By William from Mansfield OH USA on Wednesday, August 06, 2014
  • Pros: Comes with wall charger. can be charged while attatched to the GDL 39 3D. Lasts 4 hours.
  • Review: It's nice to be cordless when my flight is under 4 hrs (the life of the battery) and it's even nicer to know that if I loose onboard power that the battery will allow me to continue receiving weather, traffic, pilot reports, and WAAS level position data for my Garmin Aera 796 which also contains a battery backup.

Almost necessary to use GDL 39

  • By Kamala from Fort Wayne IN USA on Tuesday, November 19, 2013
  • Pros: GDL39 use is much simpler with the battery
  • Review: I have used the battery for about a month. Works fine with 120VAC or USB port (with different cables, of course). The battery mounts in the base that comes with the GDL 39 antenna (which is now mounts on the battery). The GDL39 base is so clumsy that I don't use it and mount the battery/antenna on my cowl with velcro - but the bottom of the battery is rubberized so the velcro does not stick very well. OHHH! WElllLLL!

When you are learning, at home, how to use the GDL 39 antenna and the Garmin Pilot software, it is cumbersome without this battery. The GDL 39 works on 12/24VDC and requires WiFi for data and firmware updates. When you go to use 12V car battery, the WiFi signal is not great unless you have a smart phone with WiFi hotspot.

With this battery, life became much simpler during the initial learning period and now when I download charts, live weather etc at my desk prior to a flight.
