"It's been a long time since I've been really excited about a headset. With the introduction of the new Sennheiser S-1 and its adaptive, four-microphone sampling technology, Sennheiser sets a new headset standard."
- Marc Lee, Plane & Pilot Magazine.

The Sennheiser S1 Digital aviation headset, designed in tandem with BMW DesignWorks USA, gives you maximum control over noise levels in the cockpit, so you can focus on the joy of flying. At the push of a button, the S1’s exclusive NoiseGard™ / digital technology accurately analyzes the cockpit’s current noise levels to achieve superior noise cancellation during all phases of flight—from take-off to cruise to landing. Design features like adjustable headband contact pressure and a special “comfort zone” for glasses ensure you stay comfortable. And with a Bluetooth interface, clear voice transmission and a customizable treble boost function, you’ll never miss a word.

Sennheiser S1 Headset Highlights:

  • Exclusive Smart Adapt Technology customizes noise reduction to your aircraft environment and current phase of flight. The digital adaptive circuit offers noise cancellation second to none.
  • Customized comfort. Since not all heads are created alike, the S1 offers three different headband tension settings to give you the right fit.
  • Superior audio clarity with customizable treble boost.
  • Keep your ears safe with Peak-Level Protection to ensure that any sound greater than 110db is automatically muted to an acceptable level.
  • Soft, light, comfortable ear seals. Specially designed ear pad "comfort zones" perfectly accommodate eyeglasses.
  • Bluetooth wireless connection to your cell phone and music player.
  • Legendary Sennheiser Audio Quality. Sennheiser knows how to make your tunes sound like they should.

Sennheiser S1 Digital NoiseGard ANR

At the push of a button, the S1’s exclusive NoiseGard digital technology accurately analyzes the cockpit’s current noise levels to achieve superior noise cancellation during all phases of flight—from take-off to cruise to landing. The graphic below shows the real world frequency response of the cockpit noise in a single engine prop. The top line shows the cockpit noise without any headset. The second line is the cockpit noise heard using a standard passive headset. The third line shows the noise cancellation using a top of the line standard ANR headset, and the bottom line is the noise with the adaptive, digital, NoiseGard found in the Sennheiser S1 Headset.

Bluetooth Wireless and Audio Functions

Sennheiser S1 BluetoothThe Sennheiser S1 Headset has integrated Bluetooth wireless capabilities to allow you to connect the headset to any Bluetooth equipped mobile phone or portable music player. The control box on the S1 Headset gives you remote access to all features of the mobile device if it supports the Bluetooth profile. With the S1 control box you can skip songs, pause, mute, increase or decrease the sound and more. The S1 Headset can also be used as a wireless headset for your mobile phone outside of the aircraft, for example to file a flight plan while standing on the tarmac.

The Sennheiser S1 Headset has two separate audio mixers; one for music and the other for mobile phone and ATC communications to ensure that both speech and your music sounds great! Music streaming via Bluetooth 2.1 is done via the A2DP and AVRCP profiles.

Each S1 Headset can quickly and easily be configured for Audio Muting at any time. When Audio Muting is turned on, the audio signal from your music or mobile device is automatically decreased by 24 db during any ATC communication so you don't miss any important instructions.

Adjustable contact pressure

Sennheiser understands that not all heads are created equal. What may fit one person may be much too loose or tight on another person. Therefore, they have introduced adjustable contact pressure to provide the maximum comfort and best fit for virtually everyone! Each side of the S1 Headset offers three contact pressure adjustments - minimum, medium and high contact pressure.

Soft Ear Seals and Sunglass Comfort Zones

Sennheiser S1 Comfort ZonesAnyone that has worn eyeglasses or sunglasses during flight knows that after a while you start to have discomfort where the ear cup presses on the temple of the glasses against your head. Sennheiser solved this problem with a special material on the ear cushions of the S1 Headset. On the areas where the glasses normally press against the temple, Sennheiser has added a soft, perforated memory foam that is used to avoid uncomfortable contact pressure. And, because it is a special memory foam you are ensured the best possible seal when used with or without glasses. The result is a light and comfortable feeling with a great seal to block external noise.

Improved Passive Noise Attenuation

Effective passive noise attenuation strongly depends on a proper sealing of the ear pads against the head. Everyone's head is a different size and shape and some pilots suffer from a good sealing of the ear cups, especially in the lower area of the ear cup. The S1 has solved this problem with a V shape on the lower part of the ear cups which allows for better sealing against the head, especially for people with a smaller face. Sennheiser also designed the S1 Digital Headset to have a lower pivot point of the ear cup than most headsets. With the lower pivot point of the ear cup, you will get better contact below the ear where the jawbone is located and substantially enhance the overall passive noise attenuation.

"The S-1 blew me away. It was the first ANR headset that worked well in my noisy open cockpit... This was easily the most comfortable headset I've worn... Sound-wise, the S-1 was pure Sennheiser - crisp, clear and full-bodied; the antithesis of tinny. The ANR worked famously, and playing with the push-bottom sound sampling and resulting tailored noise attenuation throughout the flight was nothing short of impressive. It was like I had created a custom headset for my environment only."
- Marc Lee, Plane & Pilot Magazine.

Sounds all good, still needs some refinements
by Scott from Ely MN USA

Pros: Less pressure on head compared to Bose A20
Cons: BT volume too low, can't get it to increase. Need adjustment to change forward/back position of head band.
Review: Still need some refinements to make it better.

Nice Headset
by Paul from Saint Peters MO USA

Review: I like it. I don't have a lot of ANR background for comparison, but have worked with Sennheiser products as a sound engineer.  The button to reassess the current flight noise does make a difference, but it seems this could be done automatically. The mic boom is a bit short, and the advertised padding to accomodate glasses doesn't really make a difference. Otherwise, very nice.

Almost perfect
by GEORGIOS from HERAKLION GREECE

Pros: Design , light weight , Noisegard update button , nice fit , adjustable clamp force, clear sound , equalizer function
Cons: Price , Light "blowing" - high frequency sound
Review:

I m a professional turboprop pilot so I'm everyday exposed to high decibel noises. In general I'm quite happy with the S1, it fulfilled almost all of my expectation.  Especially the Noise Gard update button can be real useful.  There are 2 things that troubled me though.
I still can hear a light blowing sound, like the one which is heard at their web-page sound reduction demo.
And also, I haven't still found out about the warranty years in Europe.
Their customer service department hasn't given me a clear answer about it, which is very annoying, because the 5 year warranty is important to me.

As a general opinion I'm happy I got them.

Disappointing
by Mike King from Houston

Pros: All the hype
Cons: All the hype
Review: The ANR is not as good as expected. Sennheiser is known for excellence in their products, but I feel this one is a let down. I expected something better from Sennheiser. The sound byte samples provided on the mypilotstore website sound impressive, but definitely not representative of this product and in fact I feel misleading.

I've owned the Zulus, A20 and DC 10-56 noise canceling, and any one of those is leaps and bounds in front of the S1. I'm sure the headset has many good features, but at the end of the day if it can't perform its primary function, what good are the extras? Like the bluetooth and adjustable pressure?

The headset feels bulky and cumbersome. It has a nice fit around the ears, so it would be comfortable for a full day of flight. When operating the noise cancelling, a loud and uncomfortable click is heard through the speakers. The ANR is surprisingly ineffective. I didn't use the blue tooth nor use it to listen to music.

I fly helicopters and I just can't find anything that works better than a $300 pair of DC and 25 cent earplugs. The Bose A20 comes close though.

NICE!
by Marty from New Prague MN USA

Pros: very good noise canceling
Cons: none yet
Review: My new S-1 are being used in husky amphib and it's very nice after 2-3 hr flight to get out and be able to hear right away instead of the engine drone ringing in you ears for the next couple hours.  They are very nice and would recommend them to anybody who flies noisy aircraft.

Nice craftsmenship
by D from Sevierville TN USA

Pros: You could hear great !
Cons: It transmitted to much background noise. making it hard for others to understand me.
Review: Unfortunately, I have one of the noisiest aircraft you will ever fly in. This headset didn't work for me, because it transmitted too much background noise, from my Main rotor transmission right behind my head. This made it to hard for other pilots to understand me. Everything else about the headset was great, I could hear excellent. This headset would most likely work great in any other aircraft, other than something as noisy as mine.

Not as quiet as advertised
by Ken from Greendale WI USA

Pros: Lower price with Blue Tooth
Cons: Poor performance, much heavier
Review: It is a very nice looking headset with lots of features but the ANR capability is nowhere near that of the Bose A20. I had planned to purchase the Bose A20 but was taken by the hype and lower price of the S1 new release at Oshkosh. I bought 2 S1 headsets sight unseen. When I received them and compared them to the Bose, side by side, the Bose ANR was much quieter. Even with a hat and glasses on the Bose eliminates engine noise from my RV aircraft. I had to remove my hat and push the S1's against my ears to achieve the same performance. That was with the S1 adjusted as tight as possible. I returned the S1's and bought 2 Bose A20's and I am very happy with them.

So far, very nice
by Michael from Saint Cloud MN USA

Pros: comfortable, good sound
Cons: sync of the bluetooth
Review: So far very nice, haven't been able to sync the bluetooth yet and it seems a bit heavy, but noise reduction is great, clarity is great, just need a bit more time with it.

Another choice will be a better choice
by omar from Milwaukee WI USA

Review: I am a student pilot and very close to getting my private pilot license. I started with the Sennheiser HMEC-461 & I was satisfied with its features. But after hearing the announcement of the S1 I decided to get them as soon as they launched.

Its been almost 3 weeks since I have been using them and I have few concerns with them which is why I decided to return them.

a) I was having trouble positioning the mic every time close to my lips since it kept moving away every time. My instructor had trouble listening to me for the same reason during the flight. Its frustrating!

b) The contact pressure levels feature knob did not work too well for me. A product specialist from Sennheiser tried hard explaining me on the phone on "how-to" adjust it but it just did not work.

Over all I think Sennheiser has done a good job with the active noise reduction but I am clearly disappointed with the above mentioned concerns and have so decided to exchange these with the A20.

Also, I would like to mention I am very impressed with the service of MyPilotStore. I had no trouble in returning the headset at all. All my concerns have been taken care of in the best way possible and I would recommend everyone to buy all their pilot supplies from here. Excellent customer service!

Not as good as Lightspeed, better than Bose
by Phillip from Atlanta GA USA

Pros: Good for people with large ears
Cons: Cosmetically undesirable
Review: It is a good product, but not great. Has large, comfortable ear cups and headband. Noise cancellation was good, but (here again) not great. Design is a bit clunky and doesn't feel tightly constructed.

Compared it against Lightspeed's new product and Lightspeed was clear winner.

Not all that
by Richard from Miami, FL

Review: Its not a bad headset but you are much better off with a Bose A20 or maybe a Zulu. I tried it for about a week and was not impressed with the headset so I returned it and bought a Bose A20.
