Telex Stratus Heli-XT ANR Helicopter Headset

Oops, we have too many! We're over-stocked on the Telex Heli-XT. We normally offer this headset for $549.00! Take advantage of the mistake and get the best price ever offered on this headset!

Equipped with a host of unique features, the Stratus Heli-XT is the result of a rigorous R&D program, including extensive field-testing with major helicopter fleet operators in U.S. and international markets. Feedback from the field was overwhelmingly positive: pilots found the Stratus Heli-XT superior in every respect to their current headsets, in terms of noise protection, comfort, and audio performance. The Stratus Heli-XT provides passive noise reduction of greater than 29dB and active noise reduction (ANR) of up to 16dB.

The Telex Stratus Heli-XT Features:

  • Superior Noise Protection for Helicopter Pilots. Telex pioneered Active Noise Reduction (ANR) technology in aviation headsets and now we’ve taken hearing protection a step further with noise reduction technology for the helicopter pilot. The Stratus Heli-XT cancels harmful, low-frequency noises common in helicopters that other headsets can’t block.
  • Comfort. Telex’s patented ComfortCam system allows you to adjust your headset for a custom fit. It alleviates clamping, no matter how long you wear the headset.
  • FlexPower An advanced power management system which gives pilots the option to power the headset via the helicopter panel, standard alkaline batteries, or rechargeable batteries (includes built-in recharging system). Provides 50 hours of battery life. A cigarette lighter adapter is included to power the headset off of aircraft power and for recharging. An AC wall adapter is also provided.
  • Noise Cancelling Microphone. The amplified electret noise-cancelling microphone prevents unwanted cabin noise from entering the communication system. The boom rotates up to allow use on either side of the head. Retaining hooks are designed into the microphone housing to securely hold the windscreen in place.
  • Auto Shut-Off. The headset will shut off automatically after 15 minutes in low-noise environments. When Auto Shut-Off is enabled, the headset is kept active by communication over the aircraft intercom system, cell phone conversations, listening to music, and cabin noise greater than 90dB.
  • Cell phone connector and stereo music interface jack. There is a jack for cell phone communication and an auxiliary input jack for use with portable audio devices (MP3 player/smartphone).
  • Coiled cord and TP-120, U-174/U equivalent plug.
  • Individual volume controls for each ear cup accommodate individual preferences
  • Comfortable Ear cups include foam seals and two-directional pivoting to conform to the shape of the head – even around eyewear – and evenly distribute weight, minimizing “hot spots” and pressure on the ears

5 year Telex warranty.

OPTIONAL:  Enable wireless streaming Bluetooth music and/or cell phone to this headset with our Bluetooth Aviation Headset Streamer.

Good value but with significant shortcomings.
by FB from Where the flying is.

Pros: Comfortable. Affordable. Active AND Passive noise reduction.
Cons: Mixed build quality. Unpredictable microphone issues.
Review: I had high hopes for this headset! I'll give a brief introductory summary, then get in to the details. While there is much that I like about the headset, then end result is I no longer use it and have had some notable issues and disappointments with it. Would I recommend it? All depends on your need and application. Read on.

I have had it for about a year and have used it in both piston and turbine helicopters. As a CFI at the time of purchase the price being much more affordable than Bose or Lightspeed was a big factor. Another significant advantage of it was, as a musician in my off time, this headset having actual passive noise reduction rating put it far ahead of a Bose, which as most know that have experienced it, is terrible whenever the batteries go dead.

Noise: In this Telex, when the power dies you can recognize it by an odd pulsation sound in the ANR. I simply turn it off and carry on. The remaining passive reduction is on par with a low end David Clark. Quite sufficient for finishing that flight and then replacing batteries. ***Be advised, for any of you R22/44 students or CFIs considering this headset, the ANR takes getting used to. At first you'll find yourself struggling to hear the subtle changes in rotor RPM that you were accustomed to hearing. The ANR muffles it substantially. You do get used to it, but just a heads up.

It is very comfortable. Very! No headache issues. It looks a little dorky due to it's bulky shape, but heck, function over form, right?

Build quality is somewhat mixed. Feels pretty good at first, but then you find yourself noticing little cosmetic things that you wonder if they'll last. Those super comfortable ear cups completely came apart after only about 300 hours of flight time... and I mean completely came apart.

Performance and Use... Okay, this is where it get's iffy. The first unit I ordered from My Pilot Store arrived defective. ANR would not turn on. MPS was awesome and I had a replacement headset on the way immediately. Thanks, guys! They second headset seemed to function fine, so off I went, but I did wonder a little... how high a quality is this design? For the most part it worked well, BUT seemingly without rhyme or reason there would be an aircraft in which the headset did Not work properly. Usually Mic related, it would either sound completely distorted or "squeal." In other words, unusable for Tx. Rx was fine. It was repeatable, meaning I could go back to that same aircraft and plug it in to the same jack and radio, and I'd get the same problem. I suspected a mic gain or impedance issue. Thing is, NO other headset would do that. Bose, Lightspeed, as many different David Clarks as you could imagine. None. Only this Telex. What the heck? Well, the plot thickens.

I got a job flying turbines, but during training I encountered this issue again. In certain aircraft it would not work correctly. I tried adjusting the mic gain on the headset, to no avail. It seemed to be an impedance problem. However, in this new job environment there was no way I could have a headset that would not work in every aircraft. It was unacceptable. I contacted CS at Telex (actually Bosch) and described the problem. I was able to send it in under warranty, but they could find no issue with it. To their credit they replaced the cosmetic items that had failed, and then sent it back to me at no charge. However, I still have a headset that cannot be relied upon 100%. I never know if the particular aircraft I jump into will have this mic issue or not. So, I am back to using my good ol' David Clark.

Is this issue across the board with Telex? I have no way of knowing. A friend of mine has the fixed-wing variant and has had good luck with his. I think it's very much still a developing product. I'm very glad to see some competing products with good innovation (such as the dual active and passive ratings) to compete with the ultra expensive headsets, but for my needs I just cannot rely upon it. This is the main reason for the 3 stars.

My Pilot Store gets 5 stars for their customer service.

Telex Stratus for heli
by Winston from NJ USA

Pros: Solid build quality, and reasonable price.
Cons: Heavy, wide, faulty, power hungry
Review: Since 99' I have had only two headsets, both of which were Telex. When it came time to upgrade to noise cancelling unit Telex was the obvious choice for me. It was also on sale at the time.. Well below competetors. Out of the box the unit had a great quality and solid build, also I noted it was heavy... And huge. The unit is very wide at the ears and very heavy. It has the ability to wire in your phone or music device but the cable sent to attach the phone are the 2.5 size, not the 3.5 commonly used on phones. Which meant I need an adaptor or a cable with 2.5 to 3.5... I ended up having to buy a 3.5 to 2.5 adaptor and a new 3.5 cable... Oh and the noise cancelling devours batteries, the first set of AA lithium batteries lasted 3 weeks, okay not bad, but since then it eats batteries almost every flight. Often I need to shut it of in flight as the low battery situation cause interference with airfract radio. It's similar to having the VOX a hair to sensitive.
Would I buy it again... No
Would I return it if I could.... Yes
What would I buy instead... Bose A20 maybe

Great Headset, Awesome Price!
by Michael from Chicago IL USA

Pros: Great quality, awesome ANR, and very comfortable to wear.
Cons: A bit bulky and the rechargeable batteries did not work.
Review: The headset is a bit bulky, but the comfort and active/passive noise canceling capabilities are well worth the sale price. The audio clarity is excellent and the individually adjustable volume controls on each ear are a plus. The microphone can also be rotated depending on the location of the hookup. The headphones came with connection cords for an MP3 player, phone connection, 2 rechargeable batteries, and a car/outlet charger. The only issues with the headphones so far where that the rechargeable batteries were so old that they didn't hold a charge (plain AA worked fine) and the phone connection cord was for older generation phones. I have not tried any other features yet, but an very happy with the purchase.

Solid headset, some noise artifacts when adjusting to its environment
by Bram from Los Gatos CA USA

Pros: Solid build, comfortable, good ANR
Cons: ANR adjustment time
Review: Great, solid feel, good sound quality and good ANR. However, the first couple of minutes the headset appears to be adjusting the ANR to its environment, which makes the audio unclear.

Excellent value for the money
by Charly from Sarasota FL USA

Pros: Touch and feel gives a good quality impression, very comfortable to wear.
Cons: Had to disable the auto ANR switch off in order to keep it on during flight time.
Review: Very good experience in using it with the R22. ANR works great even with doors off configuration.

Great bang for the buck
by Aaron from Scottsdale AZ USA

Pros: A proper ANR headset for just over $300 on sale.
Cons: A bit on the bulky side but worth it for passive noise reduction.
Review: Probably the single best value in an ANR headset for the price, especially when purchased on sale. The first one I got wouldn't run off the batteries but was swiftly exchanged and I've been very happy with the purchase. The best feature is that it has sufficient passive noise reduction to comfortably fly the helicopter even if the ANR were to quit or batteries die. Audio clarity is very good, with individually adjustable volume for each ear cup and the boom mic can be flipped depending on which seat you're in. It's a bit bulky but the size and weight has not been an issue on typical helicopter training flights.

I have bought many Telex Headsets before
by Robert the R44 driver. from Haviland KS USA

Pros: Price, and I know it will do what I expect.
Cons: None
Review: I have a Telex Stratus 50 Digital and a Stratus 30 XT for my airplanes and was in the market for a replacement headset for my helicopter. Just happened to look on MyPilotStore web site and found they were over stocked on just what I wanted so I was very pleased to save 200 bucks and get a product that I knew would do just what I wanted.

Don't buy
by Aaron from Fairbanks, AK

Pros: Cheap at first
Cons: something is always broke.
Review: Battery charger broke within the first month. No problem just use alkaline batteries. Then the mic broke about 7 months later. Called for and ordered a replacement mic, cost about $86 dollars. After a week the mic didn't show up. I called back but this time the woman at customer service said we don't sell parts, I asked her who did she said nobody, they only deal with certified repairman. The mic simply unplugs and a new one plugs in, why do I need to be certified. Get something that lasts, this has been by far the shortest lived, most troublesome headset I have ever owned. This is my first and only online review, that's how strongly I feel about this poor product.

Great Headset, Great Value!
by H from Scottsdale AZ USA

Pros: Price. Noise attenuation without ANR. ANR attenuation boost.
Cons: None
Review: Works well; ANR is very effective, but also attenuates without ANR as well as my tried and true DC's. At first I heard a high pitched squeal intermittently and others claimed to hear it more regularly when I lent them the headset. This only occurred with ANR and soon went away. I think it might be feedback loop from the mike and is eliminated by slight repositioning of mike.

I'm very pleased with the performance and can't get over the value. Only thing I can't comment on is longevity. I hope they last as long as my 30 yr old DC's which are still as good as the day I bought them.

I recomend this product
by A Customer from Gresham WI USA

Pros: works very well even when battery's die
Cons: Battery Does not hold charge very well
Review: This headset is a great buy. It is comfortable to wear for extended periods. The only complaint is the battery does not last long and can not be charged the day before a flight, must be charged the day of flight. The battery does not hold charge very well. Even when the battery's die the headset is still very quiet and worth the money.

Good set for the price.
by Angelo from Cedar Lake IN USA

Pros: Price, sound, comfort
Cons: Size
Review: I have been using this headset for about a month and for the money they are great. They are very comfortable and the sound is clear. I fly a R22 helicopter with the doors off and like most headsets it picks up the rotor sounds sometimes but not bad. I adusted the mic. some to help. The only thing that I would like to change is the size they are a little big. They also work great when the electronic sound control isn't on.

Needs tweak at factory
by Robert from Beaufort SC USA

Review: Should come with gel seals standard for helicopter noise. Mics should come with gain turned down to start with. Doors-off noise activates VOX too much even with squelch turned all the way up. Means good and sensitive mic, but it's a little too much so out of the box. now I've gotta get the little screwdriver out and play with it.

Good Value Headset
by Stephen from West Palm Beach FL USA

Pros: Noise reduction, feel well made, value for money
Cons: battery life
Review: Noise Cancelling is good, sound is clear. Mic sensitivity could be better, and the battery life is short...I get maybe 4-5hrs max from a charge

Same quality as bose or Zulu - Half the Price
by Andrew from Boulder CO USA

Pros: Price, good ANR, good PNR, music input, very comfortable
Cons: size - some may feel "silly" wearing it
Review: I am a helicopter CFI and CFII and LOVE this headset. It is comfortable and very quiet. It fit my budget, and I love the music input feature. I feel it is a great headset in that it has a very nice noise canceling feature, and at the same time it is a great passive headset if your batteries run out. I've shown it around to all of the other flight instructors at my school and let some of them fly with it. The only negative thing anyone has to say about it is the size. It looks bulky. It's not heavy at all, it just is big. Personally I am not bothered by that aspect at all, and thus am completely happy with my purchase. Some of the guys with more expensive headsets are actually even a bit jealous of mine.

by Tyler from Bend OR USA

Pros: super comfortable, cost effective
Cons: If only the case were boxish
Review: I've enjoyed them greatly, the ear pads are very secure and the noise cancellation is as equally as good as lightspeed zulu and boise. Really, I love them, and for the price, can not be beat! I've lent them to other pilots, with great feedback as well.
