Say hello to the Garmin aera series: Easy-to-use pilot/motorist GPS solutions
from the leader in both Aviation and Automotive portable navigation. Featuring
crisp 4.3-inch QVGA wide-format displays with touchscreen interface, all four
aera models come with preloaded automotive maps, a built-in terrain/obstacles
aviation database, patented Panel Page instrument display, and more. So, you can
go from runways to roadways with the best in moving-map guidance to match your
needs and budget.
Go Top-of-the-Line with aera 560 The most feature-rich navigator in Garmin's aera lineup, the 560 model
combines a more advanced list of automotive and piloting capabilities with
higher-resolution 9 arc-second terrain/obstacle graphics that yield over 11
times more onscreen resolution than the standard 30 arc-second versions. As in
all the aera models, GPS updating is provided at a super- fast 5 Hz rate. And
you also get full support for the latest in XM WX(TM) satellite weather
capabilities. With coverage for the U.S. and Canada, the XM service lets you
reference detailed NEXRAD imaging and METARs data, as well as current reports on
precipitation, lightning, winds aloft, airport terminal forecasts, and more.
Weather graphics can be overlaid on your aera's moving-map display. And for
added entertainment value, your XM receiver can also be used to access over 170
channels of digital audio entertainment (XM subscription required). The GXM 40
smart antenna is included with your aera 560. And a single integrated cabling
solution for power, music and datalink weather options makes for easy,
clutter-free aera connectivity in your cockpit.
Think "mini-MFD" with Preloaded Mapping In addition to the XM satellite access, your aera 560 comes fully preloaded
with detailed flight mapping, terrain/obstacles alerting, U.S. SafeTaxi(R) charts,
and AOPA Airport Directory data. So, you'll have a wealth of information
resources at your fingertips to help you make better flying decisions. A full
year of prepaid aviation database updates is included with your aera 560
purchase. And to further enhance situational awareness, the aera 560's graphical
Terrain page offers both overhead and vertical profile views of the topography
under your flight path. There's also an IFR map mode that lets you display and
navigate on high or low enroute airways - while using your touchscreen map
cursor to reference MEAs (Minimum Enroute Altitudes) and distances between
intersections. Plus, to help with traffic surveillance, an optional power/data
cable (sold separately) makes it easy to interface your aera with the Garmin GTX
330 Mode S transponder in your aircraft, thus enabling you to access and display
TIS traffic alerts in busy terminal airspace. As an added convenience, you can
also use the aera to load communication frequencies into your Garmin SL 40 Comm
or SL 30 Nav/Comm transceiver.

by Kayak Jack from MI USA Pros: Many, many features. Cons: Yoke mount adapter is clumsy. May need several to cover all types of aircraft. Review: I've had opportunity to use it in my plane only once so far, and liked it. It operates much like other Garmin GPS units. I have not subscribed to the weather service yet, so cannot comment on that. In the car, it works even nicer than my Garmin Street Pilot, which I like a lot.

Love the touch interface but a little new (rough around the edges) by Frank from Walled Lake MI USA Pros: Smaller, lighter, touch screen Cons: Touch screen sometimes takes 2 presses Review: The touch screen makes programming and using the unit a lot easier than the 496. However, there's a learning curve... in flight is not the best time to be looking for something you can't find. There are also some bugs that hopefully new software downloads will fix, but overall it's a major re-write and a welcome step into the touch screen world. Touch screen sometimes requires 2 taps to register your finger.

Battery does not last more than 15 minutes by Suzanne from Snowmass CO USA Pros: Potential of the unit is great Cons: Nexrad weather seems to be intermittant Review: Great unit, but my battery charge only lasts 15 minutes!!

Some missing utility when compared to the 396/496 by Rick from FL Pros: Touch Screen is great interface! Cons: Screen not as clear, and missing critical function from 396/496 Review:
Here are a few things I've found missing from the previous generation units. The new touch screen is GREAT.. BUT...
1. CRITICAL SERIOUS OMISSION: You cant see if an Airport has approaches available and which ones, like the 396/496 by reviewing the waypoint/airport info. This is a real loss of function for the traveling pilot who is facing unexpected weather and is looking for options to land. 2. HIGH PRIORITY: Missing runway numbers on the runway extension lines. The 496 had this. 3. MED PRIORITY: On the Flight Plan List page. Why are the tabs not customizable and or scrollable? If they are fixed, it seems that Enroute Safe Altitude is not the best choice. Don't most pilots want to know Dist, Time (for currently selected Aircraft) and Est Fuel as the main items about a flightplan without having to review or activate the Flight Plan? These are the first critical items I always want to review. 4. MED PRIORITY: On the Flight Plan List Page, or even the Flight Plan Review Page. What happened to the 396/496 ability to view map? Getting a sense visually of the route is quite helpful. 5. MED PRIORITY: On the Fuel Timer I fly Cessna. And on the 396/496 I could set a timer for 3 hours 30 minutes to remind me to recheck my fuel burn and ETE etc. I used this as a fuel level needs escalated attention now. Why does the aera limit me to 60 minutes? This is good for a low wing switch, but not useful for aircraft with cross-fed tanks.
All this should be fixable with a Software Upgrade, but I wonder why it's missing in the first place.
