Zaon PCAS XRX to Garmin 695/696 Interface Cable
- 4 customer reviews.

See what you've been missing! Get traffic information on your Garmin GPSMAP
695/696 straight from your
Zaon XRX and
without the need for TIS coverage. Zaon and Garmin have teamed up to provide
highly-accurate traffic information overlayed on the same screen you've been
looking at.
Available for both portable and hard-wired (experimental/homebuilts), hooking
up an Zaon XRX
to your 695/696 is simple and easy. The XRX has a built-in serial port and
Garmin interface protocols that, when connected to the 695/696 serial port,
provide traffic information that the Garmin can read and display on the moving
map and in other ways.
TCAS-style Icons and Info
Similar to weather and terrain info and alerts, traffic information is overlayed
directly on the moving map display. Garmin displays traffic position information
in the form of white open diamonds (no threat) and yellow closed circles
(threat). The traffic's relative altitude is also displayed next to the traffic
icon. For example, an aircraft 400 feet above would be displayed as +04. The
climb or descend trend is also displayed as either an up or down arrow.
Traffic Alert!
If traffic becomes a threat, as determined by the 695/696, several things
happen. A traffic pop-up screen in the lower left corner of the display will
appear, regardless of which screen you are looking at. This is helpful if you
have switched to the glass panel screen and aren't looking at the moving map. In
addition, a female voice from the 695/696 will announce "Traffic Alert" and the
unit will beep. This is independent of the voice and beep alerts the XRX unit
generates, which can be used as an alternative traffic alert source.
No, it's not TIS
If you are familiar with TIS information displayed on the 695/696, then what
you'll see from XRX is similar, except you will never get the "Traffic not
available" alert... you are always in XRX coverage! To receive TIS information,
the Mode S transponder must be in a TIS broadcast environment, which is
primarily around major metropolitan areas. Outside this area, TIS information is
not available. The XRX Mode C-based system receives and processes information
independently of any service and can send traffic information to the 695/696,
even if you are not in TIS coverage.

Takes some time to "calibrate" but overall good by Robert, CFII from Socal from Woodland Hills CA USA
Pros: Voice alert is especially useful. Adds much to safety of flying in congested airspace. Cons: I was surprised that compass was so far off as unit was received. It was simple to resolve though so can't be too critical. Maybe it was my aircraft/metal. Review: Now that I've used ZAON PCAS for awhile & understand where to look, I'm glad I have it. I fly Los Angeles basin five days a week so get plenty of "bogies". I have to filter more than average I suspect to avoid targets filling screen of my Garmin 696. I recalibrated compass which was off more than 30 degrees & that made a huge difference. I now appreciate the usefulness & particularly the increased safety benefit of this product. Several of my pilot friends who've seen it have purchased or are planning to purchase one.

Lemon XRX by Ralph from Jasper TX USA
Review: My new XRX is not working correctly, rarely picks up transponders of nearby AC. I have an old Zaon MRX that works great and picks up most AC within 5 NM. I guess I need to send my XRX to Zaon to determine whats wrong with it.

Fantastic interface, situational awareness on Glass, and excellent documentation by Ronald from Scottsdale AZ USA
Pros: Fantastic interface, situational awareness on Glass, and excellent documentation Cons: None Review: It's great to be able to see the traffic on the Garmin 696 and have situational awareness. Linking the G696 and Zaon XRX makes flight safer. The documentation with the interface cable is very specific and easy to follow.

Marginal by A Customer from Florida
Pros: Inexpensive Cons: Misses Alot of Traffic Review: Misses alot of traffic or picks up the traffic when you're right on top of it. I almost consider it worse than flying blind because it gives you a false sense of security. I would say it missed half of the traffic that my TIS system picked up.
