Great service by Bob from MD USA
Pros: Rugged. Cons: Menu system is not intuitive, it's a long learning curve. Review: This product has a lot of bells and whistles, however the one feature in its predecessor (VXA700 has DTMF from the keypad) that I needed was canned for the new feature set. It's still a great little radio even without a readily accessible squelch control.

Review: This radio is great. Battery life is better than I expected especially in receive only mode. The construction is rugged and I like the fact that it is advertised as water proof at least for awhile. Because there are so many imbedded features the radio is not intuitive at first. Out of the box one can easily dial in a frequency. But doing much else requires reference to the manual. After awhile features that you use regularly, become more intuitive. I have had it for a month and have not yet explored its navigation capabilities. After working with the navigation features, manual in hand, I am sure it will become easier. The belt clip feature holds nicely. When clip and radio are off the belt the belt clip detaches easily and can be misplaced. I would order an extra belt clip going in. The size and weight of the unit are a nice feature. I rated it four instead of five stars due to the complexitiy of so many features with so few keys. Keys have to do double and triple duty.

by Karl-Axel from Sweden
Pros: the small size Cons: Since I already have a cable for connecting to a computer I just need the software. However, MyPilotStore only wants to sell me the package with hardware and software :-( Review: Very happy with this product! It took about a week from order to shipping. After shipping, the delivery was ligtning fast to Sweden :-). The possibility to follow the shipment was also nice. The VXA-710 seems to be good for a private pilot's needs. Extremely small and quite long battery time. Easy to use, with a lot of extra functions to use if you like. If you just want to use basic functions, the unit seems easy enough to handle. The sound in the tiny speaker is not very impressive but when connecting the headset the sound improves by a factor of ten! Inside a house I get very high noise interference but outside the reception is ok. As a backup transceiever the VXA-710 seems perfect. It also works well if you want to monitor radio traffic while your airplane is shut of and you do not want tp drain the airplane's power.

Defective unit or design flaw? And poor customer service by Lee from Texas
Pros: Compact size Cons: Can't lock frequency, poor customer service Review: The manual implies that you can lock the frequency, however, it doesn't seem to work. I thought I might have gotten a defective unit so I called Vertex. They said there is no way to lock the frequency setting. I asked if they were sure and the guy said yes, he was certain. If that is true, then it seems like a huge design flaw. I took the radio to the airfield on Saturday and anytime something bumps the dial the frequency changes. This is especially problematic if you try to wear it on your belt with the clip. A pilot who had the older model tried it too and had the same problem. I guess I'm going for the ICOM instead. Oh yeah, and when I called Vertex to ask about it, the guy was extremely condescending and rude. I realize I'm just one person, but $400 is not a small amount to dish out on something that doesn't work. They should treat customers with a little more care. I hope others have better luck. :-)
[MyPilotStore Note: We apologize for the problems that you had getting this
feature to work. The instructions for locking the dial can be found on
page 52 of the
Owner's Manual.]

A Good Transceiver by Joel from Los Angeles CA USA
Pros: Design is great. Ease of use is outstanding. Features are in alignment with expectations. Cons: Ground reception could be better. Buttons could be easier to press. Review: I find that the transceiver works well, however, it could use a "boost" in its reception. If there are plans to use this for ATIS on the ground, make sure you're quite close to the airport; anything outside of a mile is sketchy at best.

Compact, intuitive, quality unit by John from Buena Park, CA USA
Pros: size, features, intuitive/easy controls Cons: price Review: This is my first transceiver, so I didn't want to skimp on a few dollars and not get all the bells/whistles I might need. I like the unit for its size and features. It fits in my flight bag with it's antenna on, which is nice. I haven't used all of the features yet, nor have I read the fairly thorough instruction book, but I'm able to tune comms and nav, and even FM radio, without any problem. Straight forward, clearly labeled buttons make it easy, and logical menus are nice. Reception seems good, too. So far so good. I'll try using it in the air soon.
The belt clip and headset adaptors are also nice pluses to this unit.

Great radio but ! by Glenn Gambino from Ponchatoula,la.
Pros: love the VOR ind. small compack easy to learn Cons: it picks up other beater signals somtimes when around cell phones etc. Review: The radio performs nicely... and this is the but part. do not let the radio get hot sitting in the plane, car, truck etc. when it gets to hot it the tone changes to a high tone . the only way I know to get the normal sound/tone back,is to remove the battery and reinstall. thats seems to do the trick every time. the moral of the story. don't leave in hot areas. GREAT RADIO!!!
