Bose Aviation Headset X

Bose Aviation Headset X®

  • Full-spectrum noise reduction, clearer audio, lightweight fit
  • Significantly less clamping force than most pilot headsets with active noise reduction
  • At least 40 hours of performance from just two AA alkaline batteries
  • Portable cables or installation harness included

Bose pioneered active noise reducing headsets nearly 20 years ago, and pilots continue to prefer the Bose Aviation Headset X today. For eight years in a row, it's been rated #1 in Professional Pilot's annual survey, claiming 2008's top honors for clarity, comfort and technical advancement.

A rare combination of benefits distinguish Aviation Headset X from all other pilot headsets. Proprietary Acoustic Noise Cancelling® headset technology dramatically reduces the engine roar you hear in the cockpit. Small microphones in each earcup monitor ambient sound. Electronic circuitry identifies unwanted noise and creates an opposite signal to reduce it.

This advanced noise reduction technology combines with proprietary TriPort® acoustic headset structure and active equalization to provide quality audio from lightweight, compact earcups. A lighter and more compact headset structure allows Aviation Headset X to require significantly less clamping force than most noise reduction headsets.

The solid magnesium headband is also extremely lightweight, yet durable. A sheepskin cushion eliminates hot spots, and soft ear cushions provide an effective seal, even over glasses. You enjoy acclaimed Bose noise reduction in a comfortable headset weighing only 12 ounces.

The Bose proprietary AdaptiSense headset circuitry allows at least 40 hours of use from just two AA alkaline batteries. It supplies power as needed, detects when you've stopped wearing the headset and automatically shuts off the active electronics after you have finished flying to preserve battery life. The ergonomic control module puts this technology and all other features, including dual thumbwheel volume controls, within easy reach.

Features of your new Bose Aviation X Headset:

  • Acoustic Noise Cancelling® headset technology
Only from Bose, this patented technology electronically identifies and reduces unwanted noise, allowing improved intelligibility of radio and intercom audio. The continuous roar of flying is reduced, so your concentration is improved.
  • TriPort® headset structure
Proprietary Bose® TriPort® acoustic headset structure, available only from Bose, that helps enable a smaller, more lightweight design. The small mass of air inside the TriPort vents makes for more efficient low-frequency noise reduction, and also helps block high-frequency noise from entering the earcup.
  • AdaptiSense®  headset technology
Proprietary AdaptiSense headset circuitry delivers at least 40 hours of headset use from two AA alkaline batteries. It automatically adjusts voltage to maximize battery life and includes smart shutoff. An ergonomic control module puts this technology within easy reach.

Electronically tunes the frequency response, enabling outstanding audio performance for improved speech intelligibility.
  • Magnesium alloy headband
Provides exceptionally strong, durable frame that's remarkably lightweight and comfortable.
  • Center torsion spring

  • Adjustable headband sliders
Experience a comfortable fit with up to 3 inches of adjustment in headband length.
  • Sheepskin headband cushion
Plush, soft headband cushion eliminates hot spots and provides comfortable, even distribution of the headset weight.
  • Earcup rotation
Earcups rotate 10 degrees vertically and horizontally to maintains uniform pressure around the ears for superb noise reduction performance and comfort.
  • Boom microphone
Enables smoother, more precise adjustment so you can put the microphone right where you want it—and keep it there.
  • FAA/JAA TSO Certification
C-57a and C-58a TSO certified by the FAA/JAA to meet Technical Standard Order (TSO) performance standards for headsets used on civil aircraft. Aviation Headset X also meets RTCA/DO-160D and DO-214 environmental requirements.

Great headset with minor design issues
by Brad from Pensacola, FL

Pros: Great ANC, decent comfort, lightweight
Cons: Cost, design issues
Review:

The main reason to buy this headset is for the noise-cancelling feature. I've tried several and the Bose X beats the others by quite a margin in this department. I occasionally fly a very noisy Bellanca Scout while towing gliders for our local soaring club, and wouldn't even consider trying to fly that aircraft without my Bose X! For the level of acoustic and physical comfort it provides, it's pricey, but just about cost-justifiable.

Downside 1: fragile battery door. Bose really could, and should come up with a more durable solution, perhaps something like the good old Garmin GPS Pilot III. A thousand-dollar headset build with a ten-cent part that fails routinely just doesn't make sense to me.

Downside 2: The mic jack is not *quite* perfect in it's dimensions. The insulating ring between the mic ring and the sleeve is just a few microns off, which results in intermittent mic connections when used in conjunction with certain types of mic socket; this probably explains the phenomenon experienced by John from Southlake in his MD-80s. One possible "fix" is to buy a headset extension cord (e.g. 5 Foot Headset Extension) with "normal" jacks at the aircraft end. The headset end can then be persuaded, with pliers if necessary, to conform to the Bose mic jack's slightly non-standard fit. Other solutions could be to modify the aircraft's mic socket (not practical in many cases) or after-market surgery to replace the Bose mic jack (which obviously would nix any factory warranty).

Great...but...
by John from Southlake TX USA

Pros: Nice when it works
Cons: Mic won't work with many com panels
Review: I fly older MD-80 aircraft. The headset works great, but the mic is another story. It works perfectly on 1/3 of the planes in the fleet...works not at all on 1/3...and cuts in and out on the last 1/3. The real problem is you never know what it will do until you try it on every channel in that particular plane. Sometimes it will work great for a couple seconds, and then cuts out. It's a real headache every time I sit in a new plane. I swapped the whole headset once, and then returned the new one directly to Bose to try to fix it. They have no clue what to do. It appears to be a bias problem with the aircraft com panels. Trouble is, we have over 200 MD-80's, so it is not an option adjusting the bias on every plane I fly...and no other boom mics are having any trouble in our planes. Most of our pilots who want ANR are modifying the MUCH cheaper over the counter headsets with a boom mic...and love them. This is not FAA approved, but it works great and costs about $350. I spent $1000 to get the FAA approved set-up...but it doesn't work. Go figure.

Why be happy with second best?
by John from PAMBULA NSW Australia

Pros: Light weight, high audio quality, extreme comfort.
Cons: Poor soundproofing when tuned of or batteries flat
Review: I have been flying for 33 years, and always hated wearing a headset until I tried a Bose. I fly a Piper Dakota and have now purchased 4 Bose headsets for it. I appreciate the light weight and audio quality, the long life of batteries automatic power-off facility and the light pressure on my head. The only problem is when turned off, there is little or no soundproofing.

Great headset requires corrective surgery.
by Ronnie from Collins MS USA

Pros: sound
Cons: earpads and battery door
Review: The Bose headset is great as far as its operation and sound. A few little problems that need fixing though: the door on the battery compartment is quite fragile--two little ears are all that hold it in place, and they are easily broken. The little metal spring clips that provide tension for the battery door fall out, causing the battery door to fall off completely. The ear pads on my headset wore out and tore loose much sooner than headsets that cost 100 bucks. I am not pleased with the longevity of the headset. I am going to spend money on it before I get my $1000 worth. The acoustics are good, but the headset needs some minor design improvements and some more long lasting materials.

headset works fine , refining needed
by David Finnegan from Boston MA.

Pros: comfortable to wear
Cons: cord to short, catches on shirt or coat collar
Review: I enjoy your headsets, I have them on my head 500+ hrs a year. the only comments I have are these... the cord is too short, and where the cord exits the headphones(it catches on my coat coller when turning head to look outside window.
