The Flight Instructor's Manual

Both experienced and newly certified flight instructors can turn to this excellent resource for information about the problems students and more advanced pilots will encounter.

The new and updated fifth edition of The Flight Instructor's Manual is an invaluable reference for those working on the flight instructor certificate and serves as an indispensable guide for the new instructor.

The book is organized so each chapter can be used as a stand-alone reference for a particular phase of instruction. The information parallels the material presented in The Student Pilot's Flight Manual, The Advanced Pilot's Flight Manual, The Basic Aerobatic Manual, and The Instrument Flight Manual, allowing The Flight Instructor's Manual to serve as a "how to instruct" guide rather than a comprehensive textbook on the basics.

Teaching tips and common student errors provided for:

  • Fundamentals of Flight Instruction (FOI)
  • Presolo
  • First Solo to the Private Certificate
  • Complex Single-Engine Airplanes
  • Light Twins
  • Spins
  • Aerobatics
  • Instruments

Softcover, 8.5" x 11", 560 pages.
Author William K. Kershner

"Since I first began taking flying lessons, I have used William Kershner's wonderful Flight Manuals - from his "Student Pilot's Flight Manual" to his "Flight Instructor's Manual." I love the way Mr. Kershner makes fun and interesting reading of sometimes-dry subjects. His books are easy and fun to read and filled with all of the best information! I continue to recommend his books to anyone learning to fly, and have bought quite of few of them over the years to give to aspiring pilots. I cannot think of any other books on aviation that I would recommend more highly than William Kershner's Flight Manuals."

Pros: Written by a pro, and easy to understand by the student
Cons: Navigation section needs to be updated
Review: I have used Kershners earlier editions, and great for the basics. I was disappointed that it was not updated with information on GPS navigation and approaches. I think the ADF section could be eliminated (yes I know Alaska and Canada still use them) and be replaced with some information on glass cockpits and the ADS -B technology. This is still a great book for instructors to use.

Review: Easy to understand guide for CFI's that should be complemented with the Advanced Pilot's Manual which for me is a "must have".

Another Kershner hit. Very thorough.
by B.C. from Newport Beach CA USA

Pros: The book teaches an instructor how to actually teach....very well.
Cons: None. OK, no color pictures, but they aren't needed.
Review: There are lots books to help a pilot pass the CFI course, but very few that teach a pilot how to instruct effectively. Even as a 17,000 airline captain and former Air Force instructor pilot, I figured I could use a little help in teaching the basics the civilian way, and this book was exactly what I was looking for. You can't find a better instructor than Kershner. I remember reading some of his excellent books early in my flying career, so I knew this one wouldn't let me down. Each topic is covered from numerous angles including the students view, the instructors view, and even the engineers view. This combination gives one a very good understanding of the topic and how to go about teaching it.

A Library Must Have
by Tommy from Lexington NC USA

Pros: Helps me organize lesson plans better.
Cons: None found yet.
Review: This book has been very helpful in organizing my teaching techniques. Being a new CFI I found I needed some help in how to teach my students. It's the closest thing I have to a mentor.
