Pros: Good build quality and descent ANR capability.
Cons: Big microphone. Buy the optional earpads for comfort.
Review: I purchased this headset as a backup for my Telex Airman 850. I now use the HMEC-45 as my primary headset and the Telex as my backup. The Sennheiser costs more than the Telex but the difference in build quality justifies the cost difference in my opinion. I also fly different models of Jet aircraft and found that the Telex 850 ANR does not work in some aircraft. This is due to the fact that Telex powers the ANR circuit using Mic bias and therfore does not work with all comm/intercomm setups. The HMEC-45 uses a straight up battery box to power the ANR circuit so I no longer have that problem. The microphone is large but performs well. The HMEC-45 is comfortable overall but I recommend buying the optional foam earpads to improve comfort on long flights.

Review: I use this about 15 days a month. Comfort: Original earpads were uncomfortable on long flights(4-6 hours). I have large ears. The pads feel flat and hard. Optional pads available from Sennheiser are much more comfortable and slip over originals. If you don't have much hair, the top two bands are unpadded and may be uncomfortable. Power: Alkaline batterys last 5 to 8 days. Rechargable NiMHs last me 10 to 12 days. It seems, the noisier the environment, the shorter the battery life. Best to replace batteries on a schedule. As the batteries die, there can be a momentary(2 seconds) loss of hearing as you lose the ANR function. Durability: Fair. Have had to have repairs on the wiring twice in five years. The wires flex as the earpads adjust up and down and where the headbands open and close. Had broken wires at the flex points. Boom mic friction is not adjustable. The mic is relatively heavy and the friction wears out after about two years. This leaves the mic at full down rotation. The boom is fully flexible and can be positioned to your mouth even if the boom friction is broken. Use care when replacing batteries. The small metal tab in the battery box is only held in place by friction. If it pops out in the cockpit, it will be tough to find. I glued mine into place with a drop of "superglue". For Comparison, I had to repair my Airman 750 every four to five years. The HMEC45 goes back to Sennheiser every two to three years. Repairs average $75 to 100. Make sure it fits well before you buy it. Treat it gently. ANR function works well in jet cockpits.

Previous Customer Questions For Sennheiser HMEC-45-KA ANR Headset:
Ask Your Own Question
On Tuesday, April 29, 2008 a customer asked:
Q:
will the hmec45ka work in the b767. a guy i was working with used it but got communication through one ear only. is that normal?
A: Yes, this will work great in the B767.  I suspect that the other guy has the HMEC-45-KAS headset (instead of the -KA).  The KAS is a Stereo headset but if you are not connected to a stereo source (i.e. CD or satellite music) and have the headset in stereo mode then you will only hear out of one ear.  When you are not connected to a stereo source, you always want to have it in the mono-mode.

On Monday, August 27, 2007 a customer asked:
Q:
Has the HMEC-45-KA been TSO Approved.
A: Yes, the HMEC-45-KA has FAA and JAA TSO approval C-57a and C-58a.
