SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker - Generation 3

The latest in the line of SPOT rugged satellite GPS messengers, the SPOT Gen3 keeps you connected even when you’re off-the-grid. Using the power of satellite technology SPOT works virtually anywhere in the world. Check in with your personal and professional networks, send custom messages and let others track your location in real-time via Google Maps. In an emergency, transmit an SOS with your location to GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center.

Spot Gen3 Features:

  • Compact and light weight: Weighing only 3.2 oz. (with batteries), it packs easily for traveling.
  • Long Battery Life: choose from Lithium or rechargeable batteries; or line-power the unit through its USB port.
  • New Tracking Options: now you can choose the rate of tracking that suits your adventure (2 ½, 5, 10, 30, or 60 minutes).
  • Motion Activated Tracking: now your SPOT knows when you’re moving and when you stop to make camp. When SPOT Gen3 senses you’ve stopped for an extended period of time it will stop sending track messages until you start moving again.
  • New Contoured Shape: the new design allows you to easily attach your SPOT to your bag, boat or vehicle allowing SPOT to go wherever you do.

The SPOT Personal Tracker raised the safety factor for millions who took to the outdoors each year. SPOT notifies friends, family or an international rescue coordination center with your GPS location and status based on situation and need - all with the push of a button.

Some reasons why pilots are excited about SPOT:

  • You're thirty minutes out from your destination, descending from 11,500' and want someone to pick you up at the airport when you land. There's no way to get any get any cell phone service, but SPOT can send an email or SMS text message immediately via satellite.
  • You're planning a trip of a lifetime flying above the Alaskan Highway and deep into Alaska. Your friends and family are both worried and excited about your trip. With SPOT on-board, your exact position can be displayed online, via Google Earth, to anyone you choose. Your friends and family can follow your great journey and feel comfort in knowing exactly where you are at any time.
  • You're on that same trip through Alaska and you have an issue that forces an emergency landing. You make a perfect landing on the shore of a river but now you're in the middle of nowhere. Count on SPOT, its' satellite coverage and built-in GPS receiver, to dispatch emergency responders to your exact location.
  • You run a flight school with ten airplanes and have rental aircraft going in every direction. With a SPOT in each airplane, you can track the real-time position of all of your aircraft, online 24 hours a day

The SPOT device is something completely new and different from anything else on the market. SPOT allows you to:

SOS / 911: Use this function In the event of a life threatening or other critical emergency to notify emergency services of your GPS location and that you need assistance. The GEOS International Emergency Response Center alerts the appropriate agencies worldwide – for example contacting 9-1-1 responders in North America and 1-1-2 responders in Europe.

Help: In the event of a non-life threatening emergency, you can use this function to notify your personal contacts that you need assistance. Additional SPOT Assist services can be purchased and programmed to your Help button as well. When activated with SPOT Assist, the Help button will notify professional services either on the land or water. SPOT has partnered with national service providers to offer non-life threatening assistance.

Check-in/OK: This feature allows you to let your friends and family know that all is OK with a pre-programmed message along with your GPS location. With a push of a button a message is sent via email or SMS to up to 10 pre-determined contacts and your waypoint is stored in your SPOT account for later reference. Your stored waypoints can be easily integrated into a SPOT Shared Page or SPOT Adventure account.

Custom Message: This feature allows you to let your friends and family now receive a custom message along with your GPS location with a push of a button. Use this feature as a secondary OK message or transfer your personal help alert to this message function if you are using a SPOT Assist service on your Help button.

Track Progress: This feature allows you to send and save your location and allow contacts to track your progress in near real time using Google Maps. With your SPOT account you have the ability to set up a SPOT Shared Page which allows you to show your SPOT GPS locations to others on a Google Map.

Great Product - must have
by George VanderMeer from Idaho Fall, Idaho

Pros: Small / easy to use
Review: I activated my SPOT SOS feature yesterday in backcountry of Idaho when I crashed my motorcycle and broke my leg. The called helped LIfe Flight to confirm GPS coordinates so local EMTS and Helicopter could come get me.....
I carried it for years in hopes that I would not need but I'm glad that I had it with me.

Simple to use
by Dwight T from Orlando FL USA

Pros: Few buttons and easy to use
Cons: Must pre-program messages in the computer ahead of time
Review: I purchased this product in case of emergency while horseback riding. I ended up using it track my driving and just carrying it along on riding trips in case of an emergency. It sends out a blip every 10 minutes and creates a great map so my emergency contacts can see when and where I'm traveling. Think about any of the additional plans (rescue, roadside assistance) you may want before you sign up for the service as some are only offered when you initially register.

A Great Personal Track per
by Tom from Pensacola FL USA

Pros: Small, lightweight and easy to carry with included belt loop.
Cons: Not as waterproof as I'd like for possible water landings.
Review: I bought this to have a personal tracker during flights over the many wooded areas or swamps in the southeastern USA. With its ability to transmit an SOS and my coordinates, I keep it on my belt during my flights. I've tested the tracking and message transmit ability in flight and so far it works very well. Yes, there is an annual subscription required but it's a small price should I really need help.

Reliable but no speed/altitude data
by Damon (COZY III N22AZ) from Saco ME USA

Pros: Reliable, very easy to use
Cons: No speed/altitude data - just position
Review: I bought the SPOT Gen 3 (with "extreme tracking" option as well as GEOS SAR plan) before researching the Delorme InReach, and my ground team for a planned RTW record attempt next year (cozyroundtheworld dot com) - after taking a look at the Delorme system at OSH - is vexed about the lack of speed and altitude data in the feed from the SPOT, nor having the data file easily downloaded for spreadsheet speed calc. It is reliable - it's only missed maybe 4 position updates out of several hundred points logged over the past couple months - but the InReach 2-way texting via Iridium, and speed/altitude data along with the position, at similar costs, are probably swaying me toward using that device.

Love my Sunshine
by Dallice from Boulder, CO USA

Pros: Flying small planes in the mountains, it's could be a lifesaver.
Cons: none
Review: I like that it's more intuitive than the previous model, it's also much smaller and lighter. Only reason it didn't get 5 stars is it didn't work in the overhead bin of an airliner.

It works!
by Michael from Sterling VA USA

Pros: Works as advertised.
Cons: None.
Review: I've owned the two previous iterations of this device, and this is, by far, the best of the lot. I use it to track my motorcycle rides, and the Gen 3 unit has almost no dropouts. The earlier versions would sometimes go for an hour or more without a tracking point. Not this one. Very happy.
