Oral Exam Guide - Instrument Rating

This Ninth Edition of the Instrument Pilot Oral Exam Guide has been updated throughout to comply with current regulations, procedures, and airman certification standards (ACS). Exam Tips have been added to all chapters, and answers and references have been updated to reflect current FAA guidance. New questions and answers reflect subjects evaluators have historically found weak during practical exams. Appendices include a Practical Test Checklist for Applicants and Examiners, Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument Airplane Supplement, and FAA Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC) guidance.

ASA Oral Exam Guides were written to help applicants prepare for their oral exams with FAA examiners. Examiners ask a lot of questions during the oral portion of the checkride, and thorough preparation is key to success. Using a question-and-answer format, each Oral Exam Guide lists the questions most likely to be asked by examiners and provides succinct, ready responses.

Pilots will find the Oral Exam Guides indispensable tools in both planning for what to expect during the airplane checkride, and mastering the subject matter. Instructors rate them as excellent preparation for students, as well as preps for Instrument Proficiency Checks (IPCs), aircraft transitions, and as general refresher material.

Helicopter Pilots should use both this Instrument Rating Oral Exam Guide and the Helicopter Oral Exam Guide, by Ryan Dale.

I would recommend this to fellow pilots
by Rich from Carlsbad CA USA

Review: Lives up to the ASA quality standard with good presentation of materials. Don't expect it to be funny or light reading, it ain't Rod Machado, but it definitely helps in preparing for the oral portion of the checkride.

Don't try the oral exam without it
by CFII from Bridgeport WV USA

Pros: Easy to read
Cons: Quite detailed, but maybe that is a "pro"
Review: If you know this book you will ace the oral and will be a more knowledgable instrument pilot.  Without it you are sort of "winging it" when you sit down opposite the designated pilot examiner.

Nice overview
by A Customer from Random Lake WI USA

Review: This book has the items your DPE is likely to go over. Being an oral, the examiner's questions won't follow the exact format but the items in the book give you a good idea of what is covered

Comprehensive Book
by Jim from

Pros: Comprehensive
Review: This book covers almost anything that might come up during the oral portion of the exam. One the best aspects of studying this guide was that I felt relaxed and ready for anything the examiner might have asked. Unfortunately, or not, in my case, he didn't ask that many technical questions. But feeling prepared was worth the price.
