FAA Instrument Flying Handbook

FAA-H-8083-15B reprint.

This is the FAA's primary pilot resource for instrument flight rules (IFR) covering everything pertinent to operating an aircraft in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) or without reference to outside visuals, relying solely on the information gleaned from the cockpit. Readers will find chapters on the national airspace system, the air traffic control system, human factors, aerodynamics, flight instruments, flight maneuvers for IFR operations, navigation, emergency operations, as well as helicopter operations and more.

The material in this manual applies to both conventional "steam-gauge" analog instrumentation and the "glass cockpit" electronic flight displays found in advanced aircraft. Information is well organized into separate coverage of the traditional "6-pack" and discussions of pictorial "tape" displays. Advanced systems are covered, including flight management systems, the primary flight display (PFD) and multi-function display (MFD), synthetic vision, and traffic advisory systems. The book also features a synopsis of instrument clearance shorthand, as well as an instrument training lesson guide.

The Instrument Flying Handbook is designed for use by flight instructors, pilots preparing for the Instrument Rating FAA Knowledge and Practical Exams, and instrument-rated pilots looking for a refresher or preparing for an Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC). Illustrated throughout with detailed, full-color drawings and photographs; comprehensive glossary and index.  This replaces the Instrument Flying Handbook FAA-H-8083-15A published in 2007.

Soft cover, 368 pages, illustrated in full color.

FAA-H-8083-15B reprint.
Published December 2012.

REVIEW OF FAA INSTRUMENT FLYING HANDBOOK
by David from Lawrenceville GA USA

Pros: GOOD ILLUSTRATIONS
Cons: POOR WORDING IN MANY AREAS
Review: Typical FAA Manual - TNI on some subjects - Not enough information on others - some explanations unclear (especially procedure turns!)

Too much legal CYA distractions, very dry reference book.
by A Customer from Raleigh NC USA

Pros: A reference book
Cons: too much legal CYA, not for begginers.
Review: The worst part is that most parts of real maps, approach plates have a hard to avoid label: Do not use for navigation. It is hard to concentrate on a dry book and some one with to much legal CYA, just ruined the diagrams. It needs to be cleaned up. Not for beginners.

well worth upgrading to.
by Roger from Chandler AZ USA

Pros: added glass cockpit info and techniques.
Review: While the basics of instrument training never change, equipment does. I was very impressed to see the FAA keeping up with all of the new glass cockpit and GPS changes. While keeping all of the basic analog cockpit technique, this manual has included a follow up chapter for each section using the G1000 glass cockpit. Useful if you are training or instructing in both kinds of cockpit.

by Angelo from Chicago IL USA
Pros: I love how quickly I received the product.
Cons: I did not love the condition of the book. The corner was a little beat up. Not a huge deal, but it was a little bothersome. It could've been packed a little better. One of my students had the same issue.

Good reference
by Tim from Murfreesboro TN USA

Pros: Price lower at mypilotstore.com
Cons: Loose pages for Change 1 to the publication
Review: Solid source of information for training and future reference. The small packet of extra pages (for Jan 2009 Change 1 to the publication) is a bit cheesy, but they can be taped inside the cover to prevent falling out. Plus, the price was lower at mypilotstore.com than other suppliers.

Good choice for economical IFR training
by Patrick from Maumelle AR USA

Pros: Short, sweet, straight to the point
Cons: Some navigation concepts could use better descriptions
Review: This book is concise and reads reasonably easily. It provides descriptions of instrumentation for traditional "steam gauge" displays as well as newer glass cockpit displays providing a nice recap on material if both sections are read.

A must have for you Practical Test
by Donna from Arizona

Pros: Designed to conform to PTS standards
Review: The topics of this book were designed by the FAA to conform to pilot training and certification concepts in relation to the Practical Test Standards. The book is full of great visual references as opposed to the previous issue. In order to prepare yourself for the Instrument rating, as well as the Instrument Instructor rating, this book is a great reference for answers your examiner will be looking for. I would recommend using this book along side the ASA Instrument Pilot's Flight Manual. Side by side they give you the FAA designed concepts, as well as practical application and a broad understanding of subjects, as necessary for the CFII. The book has helped me TREMENDOUSLY with my instrument practical and written tests, and my CFII examiner referenced it to me many times. Worth the money. An essential buy for all you achieving towards your instrument and/or CFII ratings.
