FAA Instrument Flying Handbook

FAA-H-8083-15A reprint.

This primary FAA source handbook for the Knowledge Exams covers the IFR system as well as aerodynamics, flight instrumentation, attitude flying and navigation as they apply to the instrument pilot.

This new edition features information applicable to both conventional steam-gauge instrumentation as well as glass cockpits found in technically advanced aircraft (TAA). The new information is well separated from the traditional discussions of the "6-pack" and covers flight support systems (AHRS and ADC), pictorial displays, flihgt management systems (FMS), primary flight display (PFD) and multi-function display (MFD), synthetic vision, advanced technology systems such as ADS, and safey systems such as traffic advisory systems. Also incorporated are FAA/Industry Training Standards (FITS) tenets such as single-pilot resource management, scenario-based training, and learner-centered grading. Hazard identification, as well as task management, automation management, and risk management supplement the human factors discussion. The chapters on attitude instrument flying and basic flight maneuvers are split into separate sections dedicated to analog instrumentation and electronic flight displays. The chapter on emergency operations has been expanded to include the failures applicable to operating a TAA.

Includes an instrument rating training syllabus, a clearance shorthand appendix, and a comprehensive glossary and index. Soft cover, 392 pages, illustrated in full color.

Good reference
by Tim from Murfreesboro TN USA

Pros: Price lower at mypilotstore.com
Cons: Loose pages for Change 1 to the publication
Review: Solid source of information for training and future reference. The small packet of extra pages (for Jan 2009 Change 1 to the publication) is a bit cheesy, but they can be taped inside the cover to prevent falling out. Plus, the price was lower at mypilotstore.com than other suppliers.

Good choice for economical IFR training
by Patrick from Maumelle AR USA

Pros: Short, sweet, straight to the point
Cons: Some navigation concepts could use better descriptions
Review: This book is concise and reads reasonably easily. It provides descriptions of instrumentation for traditional "steam gauge" displays as well as newer glass cockpit displays providing a nice recap on material if both sections are read.

A must have for you Practical Test
by Donna from Arizona

Pros: Designed to conform to PTS standards
Review: The topics of this book were designed by the FAA to conform to pilot training and certification concepts in relation to the Practical Test Standards. The book is full of great visual references as opposed to the previous issue. In order to prepare yourself for the Instrument rating, as well as the Instrument Instructor rating, this book is a great reference for answers your examiner will be looking for. I would recommend using this book along side the ASA Instrument Pilot's Flight Manual. Side by side they give you the FAA designed concepts, as well as practical application and a broad understanding of subjects, as necessary for the CFII. The book has helped me TREMENDOUSLY with my instrument practical and written tests, and my CFII examiner referenced it to me many times. Worth the money. An essential buy for all you achieving towards your instrument and/or CFII ratings.
