Max Trescott's Garmin G1000 Glass Cockpit Handbook
- 10 customer reviews.

Written by a Max Trescott, Master CFI and the 2008 National Certificated
Flight Instructor of the Year, this book makes it easy for you to quickly become an
expert on operating and programming the G1000 system in any aircraft.
There is a revolution sweeping through general aviation. Two years ago, few
aircraft shipped with glass cockpits. Now, nearly 100% of all new GA aircraft
ship with glass cockpits, most of them Garmin G1000TM. Whether you're an owner,
potential owner, or renter, you'll want to become expert at flying these
exciting new aircraft and benefit from their enhanced safety.
Max Trescott, a Master CFI who's trained and taught extensively in glass
cockpit aircraft, takes a narrative approach to explaining the G1000 in ways
that both beginners and experts can understand. Not only is every system feature
explained, but information on when and why you'd use a particular function are
also included. The book is loaded with illustrations and "tips" gleaned from
leading glass cockpit instructors around the country.
You'll learn about the PFD and MFD displays, audio panel, programming the
GPS, electrical systems, using the autopilot and dealing with emergencies. A
detailed discussion of instrument approaches, integrated with use of the
autopilot, will help you become a pro. Advanced features, optional in some
aircraft, such as TIS and TAS traffic monitoring systems, Stormscopes, and
Terrain Awareness Warning Systems (TAWS) are discussed in detail. You'll also
learn to use all of the data link weather features like NEXRAD radar, satellite
images, freezing level, winds aloft, AIRMETs, SIGMETS, TFRs, and METARs
available through XM Satellite weather.
Instrument pilots will find the book valuable, since it explains how to fly
instrument approaches with the G1000, and integrates the proper use of an
autopilot throughout the approach. Data link weather and Stormscopes(R) are
popular G1000 option, and the book details how the weather data is gathered and
delivered to the plane, so that you'll understand the limitations and proper use
of the information. Someday, everyone will fly these aircraft, and Max
Trescott's G1000 Glass Cockpit Handbook gets you started now.
New 3rd Edition
The new 3rd edition includes details on new PFD and MFD features, VLJ
features found in the Cessna Mustang jet, and flying instrument approaches with
WAAS. A rewritten autopilot chapter covers the KAP 140 and all three versions of
the Garmin GFC700 integrated autopilot, vertical navigation, and vertical flight
plans.
The 3rd edition is organized so that experienced G1000 pilots can easily find
just the recent updates, most of which are in a separate chapter. New readers,
flying older G1000 aircraft, won’t need to read about the latest changes, but
are made aware of them through references placed throughout the book. More of
the popular “Tips,” gathered from Master CFIs, are also included. Readers
benefit from detailed explanations that not only describe the function of
valuable new features like the Current Track Bug, but also the context of how
and when to use them. They’ll enjoy Trescott’s use of plain, simple language to
explore the complexities of the autopilot’s new VNV key, used for vertical
navigation, and of WAAS, the FAA’s Wide Area Augmentation System. LPV, LNAV/VNAV
and LNAV+V approaches are clearly explained, as are features found only in the
Cessna Mustang jet and likely to appear in the Diamond D-Jet.
Max Trescott’s G1000 Glass Cockpit Handbook belongs in every pilot’s flight
bag and is the perfect complement to
Max Trescott’s
Garmin G1000 CD-ROM Course.

Glad I bought this book by Mason from Raleigh NC USA
Pros: clear prose. Covers most real life uses for G1000 Cons: Not possible to have complete info on all updates of the system Review: Very good plane language, logical, explanation of G1000 functions. Max does a good job of walking through how to access and the function of information available in the G1000

just what the Doctor prescribed to me by robert from Coral Gables FL USA
Pros: takes you step by step thru the whole system. Cons: lack of some sqiz to check your knowledge Review: covered all what I felt I wanted to know.
Very important the Autopilot operation (Altitude setting) which is confusing unless you learned how to do it.

More then I had hope for by Ray from Raleih, NC
Pros: Simple, easy reading, Gets you the basics quickly. Cons: None Review: I mainly purchased this product to help me understand Microsoft’s Flight Simulation FSX Deluxe edition. I am not a real pilot YET, soon I will be. I have over 500 hours on MS FSX, so I wanted to take it to the next level and try to be as realistic as possible. So I was very happy and very surprised that reading this book (for real pilots) that I actually knew most of the things he was talking about. If you have done any time using MS FSX and have flown with the Garmin 500, the first several chapters are redundant, so I skipped to the last couple of chapters and that's where I spent all my time. Learning the IFR approaches and understanding the go round procedures. Word of caution for us simmers, if you plan on doing some serious flying using the G1000 and this book or for that matter the Garmin 500, you will need to have the approach plates, it really makes a difference. Also, MS FSX doesn't reproduce the G1000 exactly, so some information he talks about you will not be able to do...bummer. I would suggest that for real world pilots that they purchase MS FSX deluxe or any other software for the G1000 and learn it before they take to the sky...i think it would make a world of difference.

Tremendous teaching on G1000 by Martin Sacks from Baltimore, MD
Pros: real world examples, practical teaching, easy to read Cons: book is somewhat generic since diff MFRs implement the G1000 differently Review: Very impressed with this book. I had read hundreds of pages of the books that Garmin produced and, don't get me wrong, they're good.
The difference is that Mr. Trescott's book gives real world scenarios of how the various functions are used so it is easier to apply and then retain the info.

An excellent value!! by Marc Doss from Olive Branch, MS (OLV)
Pros: Informative. Graphic. Simple. Detailed. Cons: Two topics were not covered in enough detail - accessing METARs and XM Satellite radio. Review: This is an excellent product! Easy to read. Lots of illustrations. Lots of details. Presented in a easy-to-follow format.
A must-have for anyone flying or thinking of flying a G-1000 airplane!

It's o.k. by A Customer from USA
Review: Really good reference. It would be "great" if it had more pictures of softkeys, and where, as well as a photo of which one to push for whatever information you need. The CD is probably better but relatively expensive. When you actually fly the G-1000 you will probably be overwhelmed at first...but like anything else....practice practice practice.

An essential for the transition to glass. by Jason from South Dakota
Pros: Easy to understand and well laid out. Cons: Refears to his simulator software often, which I do not have. Separate purchase required. Review: I've been flying the local FBO's G1000 equipped 182 for about a month now. I bought Max's book before taking the airplane on a 16 hour cross country from South Dakota over the mountains to Phoenix and back. It was an invaluable resource and I'll never fly without it in my flight bag. So much easier and to the point than even the G1000 owner's manual.
